大雨を避けて車を停める策

おおあめ を さけて くるま を とめる さく

Hard rain falls
rushing car stops on the road
avoids getting wet.

Usually, I walk to class. However, today it was raining very hard, so the only way to avoid getting wet was to drive to class and park on the street as close as possible to NACOS to minimize my time walking in the rain.

East wind howls
beach sand blown viciously
hard sand stings.

On the windward side of Oahu, or the east side of the island, the wind frequently blows very hard. When standing on the beach, you can feel the blowing sand strike your legs so forcibly that it hurts.

オアフ島の東側から、いつも強い風が吹きます。
ビーチに立っていると、砂が足に打ち付けて痛いです。

The Ascent

One of the procedures of the submarine that I enjoy very much is the ascent. Before ascending the Captain releases high pressure air from the submarine. When the high pressure air is released the submarine is usually in at least 2 atmospheres of pressure. Insided the submarine it is always at 1 atmosphere so there never is any pressure change that often occurs in an airplane. When the high pressure air is first released, the bubbles are very small but as they ascend they become 2 to 3 times bigger because of the increase of volume. Once the bubbles reach the surface the Captain of the shuttle boat sees them and then know where the submarine is at. If the surface is all clear then the Captain tells the Submarine Captain by way of the Underwater Telephone that it is safe to surface. Sometimes other boats are in the area and the submarine has to wait for getting clearance. If clearance is given right away then the submarine starts the ascent and it goes so fast that it actually passes the bubbles so that if one sees them it looks like they are sinking!

My sister, the Artist

When my sister was still very young, maybe 2 or 3 years old. She had a bad habit of drawing on walls with Crayons or eating them. You always knew when she was drawing on the walls because she would hold this long hum while she was doing it. You could tell she was eating them when she wasn’t humming Anymore. So since our mother was more concerned with our sister eating them she told us to just listen for when she stopped humming.

Going out or not going out in Nagasaki

There’s many things to see and do in Japan, but recently it’s not always safe to do so. It’s not a crime wave keeping us in, it’s the weather. Or rather, the things in the air that are keeping us in. Cedar pollen causes many allergies here so the news often shows the expected levels for the day. When pollen levels are high, you should wear a mask and probably don’t want to hang your clothes outside. More than this, however, is the influence of China. Yellow sand gets picked up in the air and travels all the way here causing yellowed skies and sand to appear all over your car. Additionally, the air pollution is getting so bad in China, that it’s affecting whether it’s safe to breath the air here. In particular are the amount of particulates in the air that a mask cannot protect your from. Nagasaki now has monitors for this type pollution, generally referred as ‘2.5’. When levels are too high, it’s not safe to breathe the outside air and the skies appear covered in a fog. Levels have not reached those levels yet here, but they have in Kumamoto. It’ll be on a matter of time before we’ll be trapped in our houses.

Life In Chicago: Wisconsin

This weekend, my friend and I took a ski trip to Granite’s Peak Resort in Wasau, Wisconsin. Even though this resort is 4 hours away, we decided that this would probably be our last snowboarding trip of the season and needed to go all out. We drove up on Friday night after work and stopped at Madison along the way. Madison is a college town filled with lots of young people. We had a lot of fun bar hopping and walking around. My favorite part was the capitol building which looks really cool at night.

After that we headed to Wasau which was another 2 hour drive. By the time we got to our hotel, it was about 1 AM. We were exhausted from the drive and feel asleep right away. The next day we got ready and arrived at the resort right when it opened at 9 AM. It was a beautiful sunny day without a cloud in the sky. We were impressed as this resort because it had a ton more slopes than our usual snowboarding spot. We were excited to explore the whole mountain.

After snowboarding nearly all day, we decided to stop at 4 PM and head back home. It was a great time and wished I could have stayed maybe one more day to get the most out of it. Maybe next time. More to come…
