SYSTEM OF HOSPITAL NO.4〜感染対策〜

Disease Prevention Strategies

When winter hits in Japan, we start getting a lot of cases of influenza and stomach flu. The patients and staff at the hospital where I work are no exception. Today, I’d like to present a few preventative measures to take against viruses like these.

1. Extensive hand washing

Hand washing is simply the most effective method that there is. They say you should wash your hands for 30 seconds each time. A lot of people forget their fingertips and the area around their thumbs, so be careful.

Aside from hand washing that relies on soap, one may also opt for antiseptic alcohol. In a hospital, there is antiseptic alcohol all over the place, so it’s quite easy to wash your hands when entering and exiting patient rooms or moving into other areas. Using this method is said to be at least as effective as washing with soap and water, if not more so.

However, antiseptic alcohol does not kill the stomach flu. So, there’s no way to avoid thorough hand washing with soap and water if one wishes to prevent this virus.

2. Maintenance of indoor humidity

Viruses are able to drift more efficiently through dry air, so it’s very important to manage the indoor humidity level. As a rule of thumb, you should maintain at least 40% humidity, and 50-60 percent if possible. In Japan, the humidity level during winter is often as low as 20-30%. Be sure to remember this and humidify your air, but also remember that when the temperature drops, the amount of water in the air also drops. An indoor temperature of 20-25 degrees celsius will ensure that this doesn’t happen.

3. Breathing masks

Masks are distributed daily to all hospital workers from novermber to march. We receive two masks a day – one for the morning and one for the afternoon. It’s unknown to what extent these masks are effective at preventing illness, but I do think that they are fairly effective at preventing disease transmission from aerosol sources such as saliva droplets in the air.

There are many other methods besides these for the prevention or mitigation of disease transmission, but that’s all for today.

As for what you can do at home, extensive hand washing would be the best place to start.
If you can afford it, investing in a humidifier for your home would also be a great idea.

Let’s all take care to stay healthy this winter and avoid infection.

Himalayan Adventure

I was very fortunate to end up in Nepal last year. I will never forget my experience of the country and I am looking forward to returning again and again. During my time in Nepal I decided it would not be complete without an experience of the world’s largest mountain range. So my friend and I ventured off with not enough experience mentally or physically and for the few days we were there we truly had the experience of a lifetime. People warned us that the rainy season had just set in and it was far from the ideal time to venture out but that did not hold us back. We started our adventure in the Himalayas from a couple of miles up the mountain and caught a ride in a jeep to a small village with tea houses that offered bed and food for about $5 a night for two. From inside my bedroom window I was awe struck at the gorgeous views and the unfamiliar sounds as herds of donkeys moved passed carrying items around from village to village led by a young village boy. Everything from what we ate, to what slept in and what we used was hand pick, hand made and from the most natural ingredience as the people lived off the land entirely. Money was not really available and the economy was truly prehistoric barter style. The beauty of the place overwhelmed me and even though our experience was difficult and the tracks were hard going and made for seasoned hikers alone, taking me all day to reach the next village, and the leeches were in full force due to the rainy season, I felt like a clumsy unfit westerner , spoilt and lazy from being saturated with modern conveniences and luxuries. But at the same time I was awestruck by the magic experience of being transported into the depths of another world and another time. Immersed in a natural wonderland of overwhelming natural beauty. Intimidated by The atmosphere and the power of the mountains that were so intense and buzzed with the sounds and scents and energy of the worlds largest mountains. By at the same time so inspired and moved to have the opportunity to be a witness to the majesty of the mountains that only experience can truly reveal and photos and stories like mine can give a tiny insight into, in hope that you too might be moved to explore for yourself the fascination of this most amazing land of the Himalayas.

A tip on writing haiku in English:

Don’t write using the 5-7-5 form. The haiku end up sounding way to long to anyone who is used to reading them in Japanese. The reason is that English uses fewer syllables to communicate meaning on average, and those syllables are often longer in duration.

Within the English haiku community, there is actually no fixed standard for length, but most every poet would agree that 5-7-5 is too long.

Many poets like to think of the lines in their haiku in terms of beats instead of syllables. A beat is essentially where the stress falls in a given phrase when you say it aloud. If you want to use beats, then go 2-3-2. Here is an example:

wilderness home
beyond rolling blue flame
frozen earth

The syllables here come out to be 4-6-3, yet it still sounds good because “wilderness” has only one beat (the first syllable) in spite of being three syllables long.

Happy writing.

SYSTEM OF HOSPITAL NO.4〜感染対策〜

Favorite cooking dish

The dish I like to cook the most is chicken because I find it easy to cook. I like cooking it in a wok most because I can add veggies and rice and cook it all at the same time. Baking chicken in the oven with potatoes and chopped carrots is my second best way to cook it. Although KFC makes good chicken, I prefer cooking it myself.
