Today I’d like to talk about the four language proficiencies. These are speaking, listening, reading and writing.
1. Speaking
Let’s use the word “apple” as an example. When we want to talk about apples, an image first comes to mind, and then the word “apple”, which matches up with that image, is retrieved. Then, in order to speak this word, the brain tells our vocal chords, lips and tongue to move.
2. Listening
I’m going to save this one for a more thorough explanation at a later date.
3. Writing
Again, with apple as an example, the characters for this word are retrieved within our minds, and then the brain tells the hand how to move in order to produce the desired shapes. In the case of Japanese, with its multifaceted writing system consisting of kanji, hiragana, katakana and numerals, this is a complicated process.
4. Reading
First, we recognize written materials with our eyes. Then, we decode this information into units of meaning. As with writing, this is also a complicated process where Japanese is concerned.
Although we execute these processes on a regular basis and without a second thought, we are in fact performing very intricate, high level tasks.

言語機能について説明したいと思います。
言語機能には「話す」「きく」「書く」「読む」の４つの機能があります。
①「話す」
例えば「りんご」という言葉を話す時、私たちは頭の中にりんごをイメージをします。
そして、それに合う「りんご」ということばを探し出します。
そして、それを話すために声帯や口や舌の動きを脳が指令しています。
②「きく」
これはまた後日、聴覚障害の話の時に説明しようと思います。
③「書く」
例えば「りんご」であれば、「りんご」の文字を頭の中で探し出し、
それを書くための手の動きを脳が指令しています。
日本語の場合は、漢字・ひらがな・カタカナ・数字と色々な表記があるのでとても複雑です。
④「読む」
私たちは、書かれているものを目で認識します。そして、その情報を文字と判断し、意味と結びつけます。
「読む」も「書く」と同様で、日本語の場合はとても複雑です。
どれも普段当たり前に行っていることですが、私たちはとても高度で複雑なことをしているのです。
