Beach at Pololu

Whenever I hike down to the beach in Pololu Valley I feel a sense of peace and freedom. The sound of the ocean and the misty spray of the waves is somehow soothing to me. And as I walk inland toward the camping areas I feel a rush of adventure as I anticipate swinging on a rope and the beautiful sights that seem to always be different. For me, every time I go to the valley I see subtle changes in the scope of the mountains surrounding it and the color of the sky. Sometimes it’s spotted with clouds and sometimes fog that brings a mysterious allure. I always want to go see what’s behind it on the mountain tops. And there’s sometime a stream that flows from the ocean deep into the valley that butterflies seem to dance over, possibly admiring their own beauty from the reflection in the waters. And you can always find odd-shaped coral highlighted on the black sand beach, along with tiny crab the scurry from one dug hole to the next.

You know, I think I’m due for another trip down to the valley. I’ll let you know what I find.

Sunrise Haiku

early rise
sun soaked sky
peacefully amazed

Lately I’ve been taking the train to work. Besides being able to sleep, I like taking the train because I get some exercise when I walk from the train station to work. It’s about a 15 min walk and I like taking that time to just think and have time to myself. One morning there was a beautiful sunrise happening right before my eyes as I made my walk. I had never seen such amazing colors and was awestruck by natures beauty. At that point, I felt an overwhelming sense of peace. It only lasted for a couple minutes but I’ll never forget it. Sometimes we just have to stop and smell the roses.

A tip on writing haiku:

Do not reveal the whole of your subject.

The art of haiku lies in creating a full and rich image using only a few words, and the only way to do that is by having the reader participate in creating that image. Give two or three hints, vivid hints to be sure, that sketch an outline that the reader will complete with his or her own imagination.

When people say something is “deep”, it’s because whatever they are experiencing creates meaning that extends far beyond the individual meanings of the words and images that went into making it. In other words, there is implicit meaning; or, one is able to “read between the lines”.

The only good haiku are deep haiku.

Let me close out this tip by presenting this haiku by Michiko Nakamura:

fresh fallen snow
greets a daffodil patch
coated by sun

Meditate for a moment on the interplay of images here, and consider how their arrangement and contrast naturally lead the reader to imagine a complete scene.

The Duties of Speech Therapists

Today, I’d like to talk about the different types of people and conditions that speech therapists treat.

Our patients are on a broad spectrum of ages-from infants all the way up to adults.

We provide therapy to people suffering from any of the following conditions:

1. Speech impediment

Therapy is given to anyone with symptoms such as impaired word articulation, failure to recall words, failure to vocalize words, strained vocalization, and problems with reading and writing.

2. Hearing impairment

By performing tests with an audiometric device (something that measures the ability to hear by emitting “piiii” noises in succession), hearing problems can be diagnosed. Therapy is given to anyone who has trouble communicating as a result of hearing difficulty.

3. Dysphagia

Dysphagia refers to difficulty swallowing, which may result in great strain when eating or even choking when attempting to swallow. We provide therapy to sufferers of dysphagia and help them with eating accomodations or even alternative means of nutrient intake.

4. Higher brain dysfunction

We provide therapy to anyone who has suffered brain injury or mental illness, which may cause symptoms such as disorientation, inability to make decisions, inability to concentrate, and loss of directional awareness.

Of course, there are many patients who suffer from not just one, but many different problems at once. And, even if the symptoms are similar, the recommended course of treatment for children and adults is often different.

In future blog entries, I’m planning on writing more in-depth about each one of the above categories.

hospital in Okinawa Japan

My mother came to visit us in Okinawa for 3 months. Unfortunately, the day before Thanksgiving, she fell & broke her hip. She was in Nakagami Hospital for 3 weeks.

They took excellent care of her. The staff was very respectful. They would always squat down and look up at the patient while speaking with them. Every other day, each patient received a thorough bath. The meals were always delivered hot.

Upon discharge, two men from the Physical Therapy Department followed us home. They wanted to ensure that my mother made it safely up two flights of stairs and trained us how to help her in & out of her bed/bathroom. We are so grateful for the wonderful care she received while here in Okinawa.
