Just wanted to share a picture of my dog, Sora. He is a Chihuahua Dachshund mix – which prompted someone to say, “Oh, so he’s a chi-weenie!”. This is actually his puppy picture three years ago when he was about three months old. He looks a lot different now than he did back then, but he is still a cutey.
１０月も末になると秋も落ち着いてきました。
２年前もそう感じたらしく、お向かいのシュガーメイプルの写真を同じ１０月２８日に撮っています。
ただ、紅葉の色が２年前に比べ、今年はオレンジっぽいようです。
昨２０１２年は旱魃のためか、赤くなったと思ったらそそくさと散ってしまいました。
車庫内で冬を越す植物類を暖かい日中は外に並べる作業も毎日仕事の一部のなりました。
と言っても、私の好きなフットボール、いわゆるサッカーではなく、ここアメリカでは、アメリカンフットボールのことを指すことがしばしばのようです。
私はこれまでアメリカンフットボールを観たことがありませんでしたが、昨日初めて、主人と主人の同僚の方々と一緒に、スポーツバーにてカレッジフットボールを観戦してきました。私はまだまだサッカーの方が好きですが:p、機会があれば今度はプロの試合を観てみたいと思います。
Anyone who knows me, knows I am a Star Wars nut. I quote the movies easily without watching them. I always tell people Star Wars is more than a movie for me, it is a part of my life. So, some of you may have heard Lucas sold Star Wars to Disney and a new movie is in the works. This has been met with much negativity by other Star Wars fans, fearful Disney will destroy Star Wars’ legacy. I on the other hand am absolutely stoked. Lucas intially had planned to take Star Wars to the grave with him. Now, Star Wars will continue on for generations to come.
In today’s world people live to survive. As we get older medicine becomes more and more important to our survival. At the onset of a headache we reach for a pill. When we want to lose weight we turn to a pill or a powder. When faced with a potential disease we turn to a pill. Now-a-days we will pop a pill for just about anything hoping for positive results. Even though we are finding that pills, even supplements, can cause further problems in our bodies.
It’s interesting how we get prescriptions for drugs that are advertised that come with side effects such as, inflammation, high blood pressure, bleeding, coma and even death. Some pills we take have to be counteracted with other pills because they cause a disease to take another turn effecting our bodies in a different way. What’s even more interesting is that we can eat and drink things that are grown out of the ground that will actually lessen disease and in some cases relieve us of them.
Take the pill or don’t take the pill? Something to think about.

Michiko-san has been writing better and better haiku, and it seems she’s even managed to get the hang of writing them in English! I played no part in translating the above. Also, I think it fully embodies the essence of haiku. It’s concrete rather than abstract. It effectively portrays the feeling of a single moment without having to go into detail. It includes juxtaposition between disparate elements. Usually, there are two elements in a haiku, but in this case Michiko-san has employed what I will refer to as “three-fold juxtaposition”, in which each line has a separate element. This has created a very dynamic feeling that is very much in line with the autumnal changes that she is expressing in her poetry.

heart machine, one turn
To understand this kanji jukugo, one must first understand that what kanji characters express is never limited to a single meaning or idea. There is typically at least one associated idea, quite often an abstract one that relates to a fundamental, concrete meaning. For example, although 「日」 and 「月」 hold the basic, fundamental meanings of “sun” and “moon”, they are also used to represent days and months, respectively. In our current example, we have 「心」,「機」,and「転」. These mean “heart”, “machine” and “turn”. However, as in English, heart can be used to refer to someone’s spirit as well as the physical organ. The Japanese carry this abstraction even further and use this character to describe someone’s mental state. The “machine” character’s meaning is already an abstraction from the original meaning of “loom”, and yet it can be stretched even further to carry the meaning of any kind of mechanism. Together, they make 「心機」(しんき), which is a person’s mental state – the mechanism of the mind responsible for carrying things out. Finally, the concept of turning can be abstract as well as concrete, just as in English. It can express the meaning of a complete change. A person who performs a 心機一転 (しんきいってん) has completely changed their state of mind. They have “turned over a new leaf”, as we say in English.

この四字熟語を理解するには、まず、それぞれの漢字が表現するものは、一つの意味や概念だけに限られないと云うことを理解しなければなりません。通常、一つの漢字には、少なくとも、一つの関係する概念があります。そして、しばしば、基本的で具体的な意味と、抽象的な意味を併せ持ちます。例えば、「日」と「月」は、「たいよう」と「つき」と云う基本的、具体的な意味がありますが、それぞれ、「いちにち」や、「いっかげつ」などを表す為にも用いられてきました。今回の例は、「心（しん）」と「機（き）」と「転（てん）」です。そして、それぞれの基本的、具体的な意味は、「しんぞう」、「きかい」、「ころぶ」です。しかしながら、「心」は、人間の器官だけでなく、英語と同じく、人の魂を表します。日本語では、更に意味を広げて、人の精神状態を表現する為に用いられています。「機」という漢字は、すでに、本来の意味である「はた織り機」から「機械一般」へと抽象化されています。更に、抽象化を進めて、どのようなメカニズムを意味する場合にも使用可能です。「心」と「機」を合わせて作られた、「心機」は、人の心の状態です。即ち、人の心の内を表現する仕組みです。最後に、「転ぶ」と云う言葉のコンセプトは、具体的な意味でも、抽象的な意味でも、英語と同じです。半端でない変更を意味します。心機一転を果たした人は、全く違った心の状態を持つことになります。。英語にも同じような諺があります。「turning over a new leaf」です。日本語の意味は、「気持ちを入れ替えて、新規まき直しを図る、或いは、生活を一新する」です。
彼は、会社を首になりました。しかし、解雇をきっかけとして、心機一転、すっかり気持ちの切り替えを図ることが出来ました。

植え床を二つに増して皮算用
うえとこ を ふたつ に まして かわざんよう

植え床（raised bed)を、もう一つ増やした当初の理由は、混雑解消のためでした。春先、絹さや、キュウリ、茄子、ピーマンの種や苗等を適当に植え付けたところ、育ち始めると、満員電車並みの混雑で、来季はちゃんと間隔を考えねばと反省したのです。それはわかっているのですが、何も植わっていない床を見ると、つい、あれも植えたい、これも植えたいと、欲が出て困ります。
