ここで言うキーとはキーボードに並んでいるアルファベット記号のことです。いうまでもなくキーの配列はタイプライター、コンピューター、スマートフォーン等すべて同じです。この当然とも言える事実に変化が起きそうです。

月刊誌The Atlantic 11月号に掲載の「Life after QWERTY」（by Eleanor Smith）と題する記事によると、『人間は１分間に約１２０語をしゃべるのに対し、タイプできる語数は慣れたタイピストでその半分、更に、今や普通化したテキステイングとなるとわずか14から31語と減少する』。

『その語数減少の原因は１８７０年代から続いているキーボードの配列にある』。この歴史あるキーの配列法をキーボードの最上段に並ぶ６文字Q,W,E,R,T,y　からとってQWERTY配列と呼びますが、何故この配列なのかにも理由があります。『それは頻繁に使う文字をわざと離れた位置に置くことによってタイプライターの故障（jamming of keys)を少なくしているが、逆に位置離れがテキステイングに時間がかかる原因でもある。テキステイングは親指を使ってするので尚更である』ことが判明。

研究者とデザイナーは検討の結果、新たなキーの配列を提案しています。この新しい配列法をQWERTYにならって KALOと呼んでいます（写真のキーボード右中程の４キー）。KALO配列法によるとキーボードの左側に子音群を、右側に母音群を位置することにより親指を左右に動かす必要がなくなり、又、スペイスバーを左右２カ所に設けています。

KALOを使った訓練後、語数は平均して３７語まで増加しました。しかし、しゃべり語数にはまだまだ及ばないというのが現状です。検討続行が望まれます。

目で語る言葉出ずとも伝わる思い

失語症の患者さんは言葉をうまく紡ぎ出すことが難しいですが、表情は豊かです。
特に目でじっと見つめて意思を伝えようとされます。
目自体が表情を作るわけでなく、口元や頬、眉やおでこなど顔面にある表情筋が表情を作っているのに、目をみると、なぜだか感情が一直線に伝わってきます。

視線合うコミュニケーションの第一歩

脳血管障害直後の患者さんは意識が朦朧とし、目の焦点が合わず、視線も合いにくくなる方が多いです。
そのような状態にあると、相手を認識し、意味ある会話が難しいことがあります。目が開いているのに夢の中にいる感じでしょうか。風邪薬を飲んだ時のぼーっとした、感じに似ています。患者さんの多くは、この状態の時のことをあまり思い出すことができないようです。
だんだん症状が落ち着いてくると、視線がしっかりと合うようになります。目をみると、あ、ちょっと意識がはっきりしてきたかな、と感じます。まるで本来の自分を取り戻したような感じです。その頃から、しっかり相手を認識し、会話が成立してきます。
しかし脳血管障害を発症すると、この焦点の合わない症状がそれほどひどくなくとも長く続く場合があるようです。周囲の方が何と無くコミュニケーションの際に違和感を感じる、以前と違うと感じる要因の一つではないかと思います。

眩しくてびっくり閉眼大拍手

今日、重篤な意識障害をきたして1ヶ月以上経過した患者さんが、対光反射をチェックするためのペンライトの光を眩しく感じたかのように目を閉じました。
今まではライトを当てても顔に触れても反応がなかったのに。
小さな反応ですが、とても嬉しいことです。少なくとも刺激から目を守ろうとしたのです。
それだけでなく、何となくこちらを見返し、視線があっているような気がしました。
他のスタッフも同じ反応を目にしました。
私は大きな声で話しかけ、今の状態を話しました。すると、少し口元が動いたように見えました。
少なくとも、耳から入った音が脳を刺激しそれに対する反応が出たわけです。
会話ができたような気がしました。

This past summer there was a very unfortunate event that happened on Oahu. During the filling of a container ship with molasses, the company used a rarely used pipe that unfortunately had rusted very badly and had some holes. From about 7:00 in the evening to 6:00 the next morning, over 255,000 gallons of molasses was leaked into Honolulu harbor. Because of this, all of the fish and coral were killed. The molasses has a chemical in it which takes the Oxygen out of the water, forcing the fish to suffocate. On the day that this happened I was working on the submarines and when I returned to the harbor in the afternoon I couldn’t believe how black the water was! I thought that maybe there was a huge amount of mud that entered the harbor from the heavy rains the night before but I was soon stunned to see the surface of the water full of gasping, suffocating fish. For the next few days the smell was absolutely terrible! A company was hired to collect all of the dead fish but that didn’t help. After about 3 days all the fish were gone and all of the coral turned white.

The bad thing about molasses is that it does not dissipate and rise to the surface like in a gasoline or oil spill. It stays on the bottom and slowly gets washed out to sea. Fortunately, the molasses did not spread out of the harbor to Waikiki but it did spread to the next harbor which also killed all of the fish. Because of this there were some fishing businesses and other water sports businesses that went out of business. What is very sad is that the fish will not come back in my lifetime. It may take until the next generation if we are lucky. It is so sad to be in the submarine when going out or coming back into the harbor. Before the spill there were always lots of fish but now there is nothing. Another sad thing is that this could have been easily prevented if the company would have been more strict with their checking of their pipes.

空っぽの畳んだ布団に手を合わす

昨日まで、さっきまで、元気だった方が、急にいなくなってしまうことがあります。
片付けられたベッドの上の布団をみると、さみしさや懐かしさがこみあがってきます。
長い間お疲れ様でしたと手を合わせます。

ここ数日、すっきりしない空模様です。
数日前に撮った好く熟れた柿色の柿。。。今頃どうなっているのでしょうか？
よそ様のお宅の庭の柿のことながら、ちょっぴり気になっています。

ちなみに、スーパーで、柿一個、だいたい９０円くらいです。

えーと、この木の柿は、
いち、に、さん、し、ご、ろく、しち、はち、きゅう、じゅう、じゅういち、じゅうに。。。。
失礼しました！！

本日、久しぶりにハワイで再会した友人と一緒に、アサイーボールを食べてきました。アサイーの酸味と蜂蜜の甘さがマッチしていて美味しかったです。まだまだ日差しが強い日が続いているので、お肌の為にもまた食べたいと思います。

After nearly 20 years, an old friend I knew from high school contacted me. Then, we were like brothers. But, after he headed out from college we never spoke to each other until a few days ago and he wanted to meet up. Initially, I was apprehensive of seeing my old friend. Surely we both did a lot of growing up, and changing and I honestly wasn’t looking to restart anything from my past. But, considering how close we were then I decided to give it a shot. And it turned out for the best. Though he had changed some, in my opinion they were all positives. Looking forward fun times in the near future. 🙂
