My first home

When I arrived in Hawaii the first place I lived in was a bungalow. It was very small. It had one small bed, a nightstand, a lamp and a rod to hang my clothes. It all had many small lizards and centipede’s. For the first few nights that I stayed there I heard the sounds of little feet running in the back of the bungalow. I wasn’t sure what it was so I asked someone there who told me it was the footsteps of the little people. I was also told that I shouldn’t bother them as they were know to take your soul if you looked at them in the eye as they passed you during their night marches. I don’t believe this to be true, but I didn’t take any chances.

coconut

During my travels today I came across these coconuts. If you look closely you can make out a nose, eyes and hair on the coconut that looks like it’s laying down. Maybe it’s worried about that machete in the barrel behind him.





This sign stands above the coconut that looks to be in fear of its life.

無グルテン食試行録

グルテン無しの食事を始めて３週間経ちました。

グルテンは麦に含まれるタンパク質で、近年このグルテンが原因のセリアック病のことをお聞きになった方もいらっしゃるでしょう。幸い、私どもはセリアック病の患者ではないのですが、知人の一人が無グルテン食を始めて以来、皮膚病や消化不良症状が無くなったと聞き、夫ノーマンは、自分のアレルギー（鼻ずまり症状並びにいびき）はグルテンによるかもしれないと疑いだしました。その疑問を解決するためにはとにかく無グルテン食を実行する他ないと決めたのです。

皮肉な事に、ノーマンはちょうどパン焼きに熱中しだしたばかりで、食器棚には焼いたばかりのパンが２、３個、そればかりか、好物のスパゲッテイの箱も数個ありの状況に、それなら、私はノーマンの無グルテン食にはつき合うけれども、パンやスパゲッテイも食べるという事にしました。

パンを初めとして小麦粉を使用する食品はすべて不可となると、これは大変！と思ったのは最初だけでした。考えてみると、日本で小麦粉を一般に食するようになったのは明治以降、ということは伝統的な日本食は小麦粉抜きということになり、ご飯、豆腐は大丈夫とわかると大安心。落ち着いてみると、小麦粉料理を米粉で代用してみたくなりました。最初に試行したのはCoconut tuiles（写真左下）、これはココナッツの焼き菓子ですが、半カップの小麦粉を同量の上新粉、つぎに餅粉で代用してみましたら、出来具合はなかなか上々、まず最初に作った小麦粉入りよりもずっと気に入りました（とくに餅粉入りがよい）。

ノーマンはもっぱら、chickpea flour（ひよこ豆の粉), corn flour(とうもろこし粉）を使った料理を試行しています（写真右上、下）。オレンジ色のものはpolenta-sweet potato galetts(とうもろこし粉とさつま芋入り）。

日本に限らず、アジア一帯は米が主食、ということはインド、タイ料理は大丈夫、となり、うどん（小麦粉で作る）がだめなら、ビーフン料理で代用できますし、そばはもちろん食べられます。

これまでに困った事といえばこちらのレストランでは、パスタ、ハンバーガー、ベーグルと小麦粉製品が避けられない事ですが、それでも、レタスで包んだハンバーグを注文出来るレストランもありますし、トーストを注文しなくともよいレストランもありと、外食事情もすこしずつ変化しています。

I love Chopin’s first piano concerto. I especially love the second movement because it cleanses my heart. When I listen to it, I have the feeling of stepping slowly out into a world overflowing with hope and shining with dazzling white light.

ショパンのピアノ協奏曲第一番が大好きです。
特に第二楽章は私の心を洗濯してくれます。
白く眩しい光がさして、希望に満ち溢れる世界へ
ゆっくり踏み出して行くようなイメージです。

藤沢も雪です。（２０１４年２月４日）

午後５時頃、窓から外を見ると、雪が見えました。
雪が降り出したのです！

すぐに服を着込んで、表に飛び出しました。
美しい雪でした。

戻ってくると、ベランダにも雪が積もっていました。
