This is a snow story that happened in February 2011. I received three picture messages from family back in San Antonio. Something happened there that had not happen since about 1985. It snowed. I can only imagine how excited the kids were to stay home from school and play in the snow. Sadly the snow melted when the sun finally showed itself at daybreak, but it will still be a special day in the memories of many happy children.
　
　雪のお話です。２０１１年２月のことです。テキサス州南部のサンアントニオに住む、私の家族から、３枚の写真と手紙をもらいました。手紙には、１９８５年以来、一度も起こったことのないことが起こったと、書いてありました。サンアントニオに、雪が降ったのです。テキサス州南部では、雪が降ることは、滅多にありません。学校は、休みになり、雪と遊ぶ子供たちの興奮した顔が、目に浮かびました。残念ながら、夜が明けて、太陽が昇って来ると、雪は溶けてしまったようです。しかし、子供達にとって、心に残る、特別な日になったと思います。

Swallow Falls State Park near Oakland, on the western side of Maryland. I made a little snowman and gave him sticks for arms and rocks for eyes. I had a lot of fun! The waterfall was almost completely frozen.

月光の浜に襲来腫れた足！
げっこうの　はまに しゅうらい　はれたあし！

Every month box jellyfish invade Oahu’s south shore. Like clockwork, the box jellyfish arrive7-10 days after a full moon and take over the beaches from Ala Moana to Waikiki. While it’s not clear why they come to shore many scientists believe it’s to make babies. (The south shore is pretty romantic after all). A few days later, they disappear just as mysteriously as they had come. Where did they come from? Where did they go? How long do they live? So far, there are no answers. If you do see a jellyfish on the beach or in the water, don’t touch it as its tentacles can cause a painful sting even if it’s dead. But if you do get stung don’t panic there are a number of remedies to make you feel better. The only proven remedy is to douse the wound with white vinegar, remove any remaining tentacles, and apply a heat pack. So if you find yourself on the south shore a week after a full moon, look for jellyfish warning signs and don’t step on anything squishy.

　クラゲの襲来についてお話しします。 毎月、箱クラゲは、オアフ島のサウスショアーに押し寄せます。時計のように正確に、満月の７日か１０日後に押し寄せます。そして、アラモアナからワイキキまでの海岸を占領します。どうして海岸に押し寄せてくるのかわからないので、多くの科学者は、赤ちゃんを作る為だと考えています。（サウスショアーは、かなりロマンチックな所と云うことになります。）海岸に到着してから数日後、クラゲは、来た時と同じように姿を消します。神秘的です。クラゲは、どこから来て、どこに行ったのか。どのくらい生きるのか。未だに解明されていません。浜辺で、また、海中で、クラゲを見つけた時、たとえクラゲが死んでいても、その触手に触れてはいけません。激しい痛みを伴う刺し傷の原因になります。しかし、万一、刺されても慌てる必要はありません。いろいろな治療法があるからです。唯一の証明された治療法は、傷口に白い酢をぶっかけて、ささった触手をすべて抜き取って、温湿布をすることです。満月の一週間後にサウスショアーに行った時には、クラゲ警戒標識を探してください。そして、グニャグニャしたものを踏まないことです。クラゲの襲来についてお話ししました。

distant waterfall
connect to the sea
vision from past

遠景に先人の滝脈々と
えんけい に　せんじん の たき　みゃくみゃく と

Last year December 2015,my wife and I stayed at our Uncle’s home which overlooks the famous valley Waipio. From the top where his home is located, its impossible to see into the valley where Hiilawe waterfall exists but smaller waterfalls can be seen near the ocean. Always when I am near to this valley, near to Hiilawe it leaves me with a sense of awe and comfort.

　去年、２０１５年１２月、私達はハワイ島にある叔父の家に滞在しました。崖の上にある叔父の家からは、有名なワイピオの谷を見渡すことができます。叔父の家からは、ヒイラヴェの滝がある谷を一望する事はできませんが、海の近くあたりの小さな滝をいくつか見ることができます。私はいつもこの谷の近く、ヒイラヴェの近くに行くと、ほっとした気持ちと畏敬の念を持ちます。

first year I am blind
slowly I see the beauty
subtle four seasons

喜びの目から鱗や四季の花
よろこびの　めから うろこや　しきのはな

Since I was born and raised in Michigan I was used to very distinct four seasons. After I moved to Hawaii I was not able to tell the difference between the four seasons for the first year that I lived here. Going into the second year I noticed that in every season there are always certain flowers that bloom. Now after 30 years I can easily tell that in the summer certain trees bloom that are usually green other times of the year and also it is easy to see when taking a drive that some flowers are either blooming or have already bloomed and changed color. Although I am very bad at the names of flowers this is something that I really enjoy about Hawaii. I really believe that a person needs to live here at least two years to appreciate it.

　私は、生まれも、育ちもミシガンです。ミシガンには明確な四季の変化がありました。ですから、ハワイに引っ越した後、最初の一年間、私は、ハワイの季節の変化がわかりませんでした。二年、経ってから、それぞれの季節には、いつも決まった花が咲いていることに気付きました。現在、ハワイに引っ越してから、三十年が経ちました。いつもは緑なのに、夏になると、花が咲きほこる木をたやすく言い当てることが出来ますし、車を運転している時、花の咲いているところと、咲き終わって、色が変わってしまったところがよくわかります。花の名前を覚えるのは得意でなくても、これが、私のハワイの楽しみ方の一つです。ハワイの季節を楽しむには、少なくとも二年間は住むことが必要だと思います。
