This past Saturday, February 16, ended the two week celebration of the Chinese New Year. All of the staff at Atlantis Submarines that it could get busy but we were very surprised at how busy it actually got. A normal day usually consists of two submarines. One holds 64 passengers and the other 48 passengers. The tours start at 9:00 a.m. and finish with the last tour being at 3:00 p.m. The two week Chinese New Year holiday was so busy for us that there was a 3rd 48 passenger submarine added and quite a few days we had 2 of the 3 submarines start at 8:00 The average passenger count for the New Year holidays was 1000 passengers a day! Every hour on the hour the submarines were either fully booked or close to it. It was so busy that I worked 12 days in a row and worked an average of 13 hours each day! Each day I do the Japanese narrations and by the end of the 12 days of working I started to dream about work! Also, all my dreams have been in Japanese for the last two weeks! On Monday, the 18th, it finally started to get back to normal again and today, Wednesday the 20th, there were only 2 submarines. It has already been decided that next years’ Chinese New Year Holidays will be what is called a “black out” period. This means that nobody can go on vacation during that time. This past two weeks two people were on vacation and it made it very difficult for the rest of us.

Mom came to visit me in Hawaii. She and I both went to see Michiko at Nacos. Michiko told Mom that she looks like Julie Andrews. We all had a good time and enjoyed some green tea and cookies together. Yummy! I presented some Japanese stories and Mom was very impressed.

ジャネルと私は、ほぼ、引越しを済ませました。引越先は、ワヒアワです。おそらく、今までの引越しの中で、一番簡単なものでした。一つの小さな問題以外は。。。小さな問題と言うのは、一ヶ月間、家賃を二重に払わなければならないことです。新しい家の契約書に、至急、サインする必要があったので、今の大家さんに、30日の事前通告をすることができず、一日前の通告になりました。約千ドルを失います。しかし、それなのに、私はうれしいです。お金より空間の方が、価値があるということを分かってきました。二倍以上広い、自然に囲まれた、私達の新しい家にいるだけで、気持ちが休まります。ともかくも、新しい家を確かに得られる前に、30日の事前通告をすることは、難しいことでした。新しい家を手に入れる確証もないままに、今のアパートから出ていかなければならないことは、あまりにも厳しかったです。ですから、千ドルの出費は、小さな問題ですね。

Janel and I have almost completed our move to Wahiawa. All told, it’s probably the most painless move I’ve ever executed, except for one small problem – we’re paying double rent for a month! Because we had to sign the lease to the new house so suddenly, we gave our 30 days notice to our current landlord just one day beforehand. We’re losing about a thousand dollars. But, in spite of this, I’m still happy. I’ve discovered that space is worth far more than money. Just being in our new house, which is over twice as big and is surrounded by nature, makes me feel at ease. And, we really couldn’t have given the 30 days notice before we were sure we were going to get the new house anyways. The possibility of not getting it and then being stuck with having to move out when we didn’t want to was too severe. So…a thousand dollars? No big deal.

My favorite tea is genmaicha. It tastes like popcorn and is cheaper than most Japanese teas. I buy the genmaicha at donquijote for $7.00, which is a reasonable price because Japanese tea is expensive. The genmaicha comes in a big bag. My mother and I drink the bag within 3 weeks. Every night after long day at work we drink a cup of tea and relax at home.

I swear, it feels like riding a roller coaster with the weather here. Its constantly going up and down, up and down. I can’t keep up with it! Haha Today it warmed up to 50 degrees, which was awesome. But I just looked at the weather for this week and it says it’s supposed to be 19 degrees tomorrow! How can it drop 30 degrees in a matter of one day? Such is life in Chicago. More to come…

これは先日のバレンタインデーでわたしが用意したものです。

日本のバレンタインデーでは、女性から男性にチョコレートをプレゼントします。

普通は意中の男の子にチョコレートをあげますが、社会人になると、義理チョコや友チョコ、感謝チョコなど、会社の上司や同僚にあげることが多いです。

日本のバレンタインデーは、元々は製菓会社がチョコレートを売るために広めたものです。しかし、私は日頃の感謝を伝え合う素敵なイベントだと思っているので、毎年チョコレートを贈ります。
バレンタインデーが近づくと、デパートの洋菓子コーナーは戦場と化します。
そして私は今年も戦ってきました。

若い男性が多い我がリハビリテーション科にはとにかく量が大事なので、安くておいしいチョコレートをたくさん買いました。しかしこれは一日でなくなりました。
目上の人や上司には量は少なくても高価なチョコレートを差し上げました。

病院なのでいつもピリピリした雰囲気ですが、この日はみんな少しほんわかします。

先日、嚥下障害のある担当患者さんが亡くなりました。
その患者さん(Ａさん)も、御家族もとても良い方々でしたし、
この一年私が1番熱心に関わった患者さんの1人でした。

Ａさんはよくリハビリが終わると、「寂しいからもう少しここにいて。」と言ったり、何とか引きとめようと用事を頼んだりと、可愛らしい方でした。Ａさんは嚥下障害が重度で、長く口から食べておらず、よく「ご飯が食べたい」とおっしゃっていました。私も何とかして少しでも食べれるようと、毎日リハビリを実施しました。

Ａさんの嚥下障害は少し改善しましたが、誤嚥のリスクが高く、経口摂取(口から食べること)が困難な状態でした。3ヶ月ほと経過しても大きく改善ぜず、胃瘻を造設し、そこから栄養を摂取することとなりました。

私は何度もリハビリの方針に悩み、主治医と話し合い、他のリハビリスタッフとも相談しました。勉強会にも赴いて、役に立つと思える技法を学びました。しかし、Ａさんの嚥下障害は慢性的であり、少し改善したかと思うと肺炎になって寝たきりの状態になって、また元にもどってしまう状況でした。Ａさんは肺炎を何度も何度も繰り返し、徐々に衰弱していきました。

Ａさんの生きたいという思いとご家族の看病で、何度も危ないところを持ち直しました。その度に、ご家族は、「お父さんは生命力が強いんです。」とおっしゃていました。Ａさんが亡くなる前日も、「強い人だからもう少し頑張ってくれそうです。」と気丈にふるまっておられました。その翌日、Ａさんは亡くなりました。私は霊柩車にのるAさんをお見送りしながら、「家に帰らせてあげたかったし、食べさせてあげたかったなあ。」と悔しい気持ちでいっぱいでした。

そこに主治医がきました。主治医は家族さんに、「胃瘻のところは縫っといたから、向こう(天国)で食べてはると思うよ。」と声をかけました。それを聞いたご家族は、「本人も喜んでると思う。」と泣いていました。わたしは泣くのを耐えられず、走ってその場を離れました。私が食べれるようにしてあげたかった。そんな悔しい思いがこみ上げました。

また、胃瘻を塞ぐことは一般的な死後の処置かもしれないけれど、思いやりのある一言を添えた主治医の行動に対する感動もありました。その先生はある時は夜遅くまで私のＡさんに対するリハビリの方針を聞いたり一緒に考えてくれたのです。そしてご家族の思い。Ａさんの死は悲しかったけれど、ご家族はできる限りの事をしたし、Aさんは本当に最後までよく戦ったと納得できる最後だったのだと思います。

私はＡさんとご家族と共に、Ａさんの長い人生の最後の1年を一緒に過ごせたうちの1人として感謝したいと思います。そして、Ａさんとの一年でとても多くのことを学ばせて頂いたので、今後も学ばせて頂いたことを、多くの方のために役立たせようと思います。
