Tomorrow I’m going on another eight-hour roadtrip down to Virgina to pick up my nieces. It’s not the first time but since it’s the second time I’m going in less than a month, I’m a little hesitant. The drive varies depending on traffic. The last trip took me up to seven hours one way! I hope to leave early this time to avoid traffic. The good news is it’s a Sunday, and there is usually less traffic early on Sundays. If I’m lucky, I can make it to Virginia in three and half to four hours one way. The bad news is tomorrow also happens to be Father’s Day, so there is likely to be more people on the road. The drive might be up to five hours coming back. I would spend the night in Virigina, but I have to get back because I have to go to work on Monday morning. I would also like to celebrate Father’s Day with my dear husband and daughter. I may make it back with just enough time.

ハローキティ、キティーちゃんが、海外でも人気があることは知っていましたが、ここハワイでもすごく人気があるように思います。もしかしたら、日本以上にファンが多いのでは？と思うくらい、至るところで彼女の姿を見かけます。また、日本では見なかったデザインや商品もたくさんあり、発見する度に思わず笑みがこぼれます。:)キティーファンの一人として、これはとても嬉しいことです。:)

ちなみに、ここに載せた写真は、結婚した際に、主人のお友達からいただいたぬいぐるみと、先日主人が買ってきてくれたクッキーです。大切にしたい、そして、味わいたいと思います:)

This past Tuesday was Kamehameha Day. Kohala is the only place in the state of Hawaii that celebrates with a parade on the actual holiday. My friend, Serena, & I worked very hard all weekend long. Each day we traveled into the mountains to pick liko and various ferns to create lei po’o (head leis) and lei a’i (shoulder leis) for the Island of Hawaii’s Pa’u Riding Unit. Each island is represented with the island color and flower. The island of Hawaii is represented with red and the lehua blossom which comes in various colors of red, yellow, peach, orange, and even white. Each island also is represented by a princess and her attendants. Kamehameha Day is very special in Kohala because it is the birthplace of King Kamehameha, who was the first to unify all the Hawaiian Islands.

Today we practiced reading my short story 5 times. We also practiced the difference in recognizing れ, ろand り,い and わ, れ. There are subtle differences. We also practiced answering various questions; focusing on the most polite way to ask a questions. We then reviewed arimasen vs. dekimasu.

昨日美智子先生と一緒にシュライナーズホスピタルでバイオリンを演奏させていただきました。普段人前で演奏する機会がほとんど無いので緊張しました。ウクレレでも一曲「Smile」を弾かせていただきましたが、完全に暗譜してアイコンタクトをしながら弾ける様になりたいものです。

Today, my violin student Mr. Osamu Takagi and I visited Shriners Hospital for concert for patients and staff.

After the performance, we taught some phrases in Japanese.

We’d like to announce a new facebook page that we made called Chanomi Talk. This is going to be a place where all the haiku that the NACOS community produces will be gathered and shared. We still want you to post your poetry here at nacosnagaya.org, but it will also appear there. In addition, there will be “challenges” and “contests” for you to respond to. If you are able, please include a photo with your poem to enhance and illustrate your meaning.

However, please bear the following in mind! We don’t want you to be discouraged from writing if you aren’t sure whether you’re doing it right or not. The most important thing is that you enjoy what you write. Please keep contributing no matter how bad you think your work is. We think poetry is beautiful no matter what. With that said, please view the following ‘challenge’ not as a competition against other people but as a personal goal to attain. If you have any questions, please ask them in the comments section of this post.

Haiku Challenge 1

– Write a haiku poem in English that includes juxtaposition –

Traditionally, haiku include two parts separated by a breaking point called a “kire”. The two parts come together to form an image, and the relationship of the two parts is what makes the haiku interesting. In English, we call this sort of thing “juxtaposition”.

The challenge for this week is to think of an image and then choose two things in that image to become the two parts of your poem. One part should occupy two lines, while the other should occupy one. I’ll start us off:

under the sky
a cold windswept night
the moon seems hot

elements: cold night (2 lines) + bright moon (1 line)

過って、人類を行動面からみて農耕型と狩猟型の２型に大別する説が出されました。農耕型は、定住する、すなわち先祖代々同じ場所に住む、大家族、これは植え付け収穫に人手が必要なためで、どちらかといえば保守的、自然を崇拝する、といった特徴があり、一方、狩猟型の特徴は、獲物を追って移動する、食料の量に制限があるため小家族、革新的、自然変革を躊躇しないといったところです。

近隣の犬を見ていて以上のような農耕型と狩猟型を思いだしました。というのは、家はこの辺りの主要道路２本の交差点にあり、自然、飼い主と散歩する犬を多く見かけますが、それらの犬の行動をみていると、犬達も２型に分けられるようです。飼い主の傍につき飼い主の歩調に会わせて歩く型と、飼い主の歩調には全く注意を払わず忙しく動き回る型の２型で、私流に前者を勤労型、つまりソリを引いたり、羊の群れの番をしたりと働く犬、つまり一定の規則に沿って行動する犬に対し、後者を漂流型、つまり気の向くまま何処へでも行く型となずけてみました。
