To understand this kanji jukugo, one must first understand that what kanji characters express is never limited to a single meaning or idea. There is typically at least one associated idea, quite often an abstract one that relates to a fundamental, concrete meaning. For example, although 「日」 and 「月」 hold the basic, fundamental meanings of “sun” and “moon”, they are also used to represent days and months, respectively. In our current example, we have 「心」,「機」,and「転」. These mean “heart”, “machine” and “turn”. However, as in English, heart can be used to refer to someone’s spirit as well as the physical organ. The Japanese carry this abstraction even further and use this character to describe someone’s mental state. The “machine” character’s meaning is already an abstraction from the original meaning of “loom”, and yet it can be stretched even further to carry the meaning of any kind of mechanism. Together, they make 「心機」(しんき), which is a person’s mental state – the mechanism of the mind responsible for carrying things out. Finally, the concept of turning can be abstract as well as concrete, just as in English. It can express the meaning of a complete change. A person who performs a 心機一転 (しんきいってん) has completely changed their state of mind. They have “turned over a new leaf”, as we say in English.

この四字熟語を理解するには、まず、それぞれの漢字が表現するものは、一つの意味や概念だけに限られないと云うことを理解しなければなりません。通常、一つの漢字には、少なくとも、一つの関係する概念があります。そして、しばしば、基本的で具体的な意味と、抽象的な意味を併せ持ちます。例えば、「日」と「月」は、「たいよう」と「つき」と云う基本的、具体的な意味がありますが、それぞれ、「いちにち」や、「いっかげつ」などを表す為にも用いられてきました。今回の例は、「心（しん）」と「機（き）」と「転（てん）」です。そして、それぞれの基本的、具体的な意味は、「しんぞう」、「きかい」、「ころぶ」です。しかしながら、「心」は、人間の器官だけでなく、英語と同じく、人の魂を表します。日本語では、更に意味を広げて、人の精神状態を表現する為に用いられています。「機」という漢字は、すでに、本来の意味である「はた織り機」から「機械一般」へと抽象化されています。更に、抽象化を進めて、どのようなメカニズムを意味する場合にも使用可能です。「心」と「機」を合わせて作られた、「心機」は、人の心の状態です。即ち、人の心の内を表現する仕組みです。最後に、「転ぶ」と云う言葉のコンセプトは、具体的な意味でも、抽象的な意味でも、英語と同じです。半端でない変更を意味します。心機一転を果たした人は、全く違った心の状態を持つことになります。。英語にも同じような諺があります。「turning over a new leaf」です。日本語の意味は、「気持ちを入れ替えて、新規まき直しを図る、或いは、生活を一新する」です。
