I have written about two of the shipwrecks in Hawaii and how they were purposely sunk for divers and for a reef project. I have been on many shipwrecks in Michigan that were sunk because of accidents. For example, many were rammed by other ships on foggy nights, fires and rough conditions are the main reasons. Many of those shipwrecks that I dove still had the remains of the crew on board. When diving on those ships one can feel the anger and sadness of the ship that was sunk in its prime. One can almost hear the cries of the crew as the ship sank trapping everybody inside.


　私は、以前、ハワイで人工漁礁を作る為に沈められた二隻の船の話を書きました。私は、ミシガン州に住んでいた時、事故の為に沈没した船が沈んでいるところまで、何回も潜ったことがあります。沈没の原因は、ほとんどの場合、例えば、霧の深い夜に、船同士が衝突したり、また、火災や大荒れの天候によります。多くの沈没船の中には、乗組員の死体がまだたくさん取り残されているのでした。沈没船のところまで潜っていくと、働き盛りの時に沈んでしまった船の怒りや悲しみを感じ取ることが出来ます。そして、船に閉じ込められた乗組員の泣き声が、聞こえるような気持ちになります。

The day after Halloween is called All Saint’s Day. It is celebrated in honor of all saints on 1 November. The next day, All Soul’s Day, commemorates those that have departed but not yet reached heaven. So, while Halloween is a traditional holiday of “spooky” fun, the days that follow are more serious holy days in the religious calendar.


　カトリック教会では、１０月３１日に行われるハロウィンの翌日を万聖節と言います。この１１月１日は、すべての聖人を記念する日です。そして、その翌日、１１月２日は、万霊節と言い、亡くなってまだ天国に着いていない人たちのことを思って祈ります。ハロウィンが、「気味の悪い」遊びを楽しむ伝統的な休日である一方、その後に続く何日かは、教会のカレンダーの中で、もっと厳粛な聖なる日となっているのです。
