Fuji mountain
as we come from the station
greeting us

In the town of Zengyo, when emerging from steps at the train station, Mt. Fuji is directly ahead. Late in the afternoon, throngs of people return from work. It’s as though Fuji is greeting them, saying “okaerinasai” (please come home; the usual Japanese welcoming phrase) as they leave the station.

Mt. Fuji
seeing me off
before work

When the air is clear, Mt. Fuji can be seen in sharp relief from the town of Zengyo. In the morning, people scurry off to the station with Fuji at their backs. It’s as though Fuji is calling out “itterasshai” (please go and return; the usual Japanese send off phrase) as they walk away.

Thanks Giving

This Thanks Giving left as quick as it came, but has had lasting affects on me; mostly my stomach. I ate so much that my stomach hurt for a good while. But the food was so good that I just couldn’t stop eating. The turkey, stuffing, potatoes, cranberry sauce and veggies were just starters. I’m ashamed to tell the rest of the food I ate. A New Year’s resolution is definitely in order.

Fly Me to the Moon

Sam-san and I had a practice session today for next Saturday’s concert.

I have two concerts next week: one at the Zengyo Civic Center on Tuesday, and another on the weekend. It will be a lot of fun!

Haiku Poem

at first only black
now only twisted metal
I can feel the screams

I have written about two of the shipwrecks in Hawaii and how they were purposely sunk for divers and for a reef project. I have been on many shipwrecks in Michigan that were sunk because of accidents. For example, many were rammed by other ships on foggy nights, fires and rough conditions are the main reasons. Many of those shipwrecks that I dove still had the remains of the crew on board. When diving on those ships one can feel the anger and sadness of the ship that was sunk in its prime. One can almost hear the cries of the crew as the ship sank trapping everybody inside.

Dinner Party

This week I attended a banquet put on by the Honolulu Chinese Community Action Coalition. It was held at a restaurant in Chinatown. The restaurant had a small parking lot in back which was hard to find. I was lucky to get a parking spot! The dinner was very good with several traditional Chinese dishes. The atmosphere was good and the people were all very warm and inviting. During part of the dinner there was a speaker who explained recent health care rule changes regarding Medicare to those attending. Unfortunately, it was mostly in Cantonese so I was really lost! I quickly recovered however after getting very lucky during the raffle. I actually won twice! The prizes included coupons to Costco and a local Vietnamese restaurant as well as a matcha green tea bowl. It’s a good thing that I purchased some raffle tickets. Remember, you always have to play in order to win! Special thanks to the HCCAC for putting on such a special event.
