移ろいの彩り愛でる季節かな
うつろいの　いろどりめでる　きせつかな

I have always loved each season in Hawaii and even though I really like the summer weather, sometimes it tends to be the same every day. That is why the autumn is my favorite season. There is a little more variety. The winds change from very strong trade winds to strong kona winds. The mornings and evenings can be either rainy or beautiful starry skies. During this time there are the different holidays which are fun and also the whales come back to Hawaii so that is always a welcome sight. The weather can be a little cooler but it is not too cold. Since the seasonal changes in Hawaii are not as abrupt as other places, there is no dreading winter and the harsh weather that comes with it.

　私は、ハワイの季節は、それぞれに、どの季節も好きです。ところで、本来、私は、夏の季節が一番好きです。しかし、ハワイの夏は、ともすると、毎日、同じような気持ちになります。ですから、結局、ハワイでは、秋の季節が、一番好きです。ハワイの秋は、より彩りのある風情を感じることができます。例えば、風は、島の北東方向から非常に強い貿易風が吹くことも、南西方向から湿気を含んだ強いコナウィンドが吹くこともあります。ハワイの秋は、朝に雨が降り、夜に雨が降ります。そうでなければ、夜、満天の星空を見ることができます。この時期は色々な面白い祝日があります。また、秋には、鯨もハワイに戻って来ます。そんな光景を見た時、嬉しくなります。本当に目の保養になります。天気は少し涼しくなりますが、そんなに寒くありません。他のところに比べると、季節の変化は大きくありません。ですから、冬と共にやって来る厳しい天気を心配する必要はありません。

この写真は、ワイキキビーチから２キロほど沖です。

足の手術を受けた時のHaiku Poemを二つ詠みました。一つ目は手術前の不安な気持ち、二つ目は手術後の安心感です。写真は、手術のあと、２週間後に撮ったものです。

These are two Haiku poems that I wrote during the time of my hernia operation. The first one is before the operation when I was feeling bad. The second one is from after the operation when I felt very relieved. The picture is from exactly two weeks after my operation.

a feeling of dread
painful but necessary
I will recover

恐怖の日痛み癒して蘇る
きょうふの ひ　いたみ いやして　よみがえる

Because of a running injury that occurred last year I have to undergo an operation to fix a slight tear in my leg muscle. The injury is called a sports hernia. About 4 years ago I had one on my left side and now I have to have it on my right side. It is very painful and I am dreading it but I have to have it done so there is nothing I can do but to have the operation. The first 3 days will be the worst and then I will slowly get better. Once I have recovered I will never have to do it again!

　私は、足の筋肉の裂傷を治す為、手術を受けるはめになりました。病名は、スポーツヘルニアです。去年、参加したマラソンレースのせいでした。実は、四年くらい前、私は、左足に同じ手術を受けました。今回は、右足です。手術は、もの凄く痛くて、本当に恐ろしいのですが、仕方ありません。手術の日から３日間は、つらい日が続きます。しかしその後、徐々に楽になります。そして、回復した後は、二度と手術を受ける必要はありません。

When I had the operation I tried to take note of everything that was going on before I had the anesthesia. My last image is when I was being wheeled down the hallway and I was getting so sleepy. Than what seemed like an instant I was back in the recovery room. Through the haze of the pain medicine I felt that familiar pain from 4 years ago but this time it was on my right side. I kept comparing it to the first time and I felt that this time it didn’t seem as bad. Probably because I had already gone through it before. I was so glad that the initial operation was over and that I could now concentrate on getting better. For the first time in a long time I felt relieved.

　手術の時、私は麻酔で意識が朦朧とするまで、回りで起こっていること全てに注意を払っていました。しかし、手術前のことで覚えていたのは、ストレッチャーに乗せられて廊下を滑るように移動していたことだけでした。廊下を移動中、どんどん眠たくなっていきました。意識を失ってから回復室に戻ってくるまで、ほんの一瞬の出来事のように感じられました。痛み止めを飲んでぼんやりしていた時、４年前と同じような痛みを感じました。しかし、今回は、右側です。私は前の手術と比べていたのですが、今回の痛みは少し弱かったように思いました。多分、痛みを経験ずみだったからだと思います。以前、同じ手術を経験していたのは嬉しいことでした。これからは、元気になることだけに集中できます。足の痛みは、長年、気にかかっていたことですが、久しぶりに、安心感を得ることができました。

黄金色揺れるコーンの収穫期
こがねいろ　ゆれるコーンの　しゅうかくき

黄金色風にゆらゆら収穫期
こがねいろ　かぜに ゆらゆら　しゅうかくき

Driving from Minneapolis across Iowa takes about four hours. Along the way, everywhere is farmland. The land contains fields of golden corn. The stalks are taller than me at over 190 centimeters! As the breeze blows gently, the corn gently flutters appearing to flow like a golden river into the distance.

　ミネソタ州のミネアポリスからアイオワ州を車で通過すると、だいたい四時間位かかります。途中、至る所に農場があります。その土地には、黄金色のとうもろこし畑があります。とうもろこしの茎の丈は、身長が１メートル９０センチの私より高いです。そよ風が吹いて、とうもろこしは、黄金の川が遠くまで流れて行くように、ゆらゆらと揺れています。
