Waikiki is a little big city on the beach. I live one block from the ocean but I cannot hear or see it. Instead all I see are buildings and hear car sounds. The noise never stops, the people, the sirens, cars, and busses. This is Waikiki’s modern voice. But late at night, if I listen carefully and close my eyes, I can still hear Waikiki’s original voice. Birds singing, trees rustling, and the waves crumbling on the seashore.

　ワイキキは、ビーチ沿いにある小さな大都市です。私は、海から１ブロックのところにあるアパートに住んでいます。しかし、海を見ることも、海の音を聞くこともできません。代わりに、見えるものは、たくさんのビル、そして、聞こえてくるものは、車の音です。人の声、サイレンの音、車やバスの音、一日中、やむことはありません。これが、現代のワイキキの声です。しかし、深夜、目を閉じて、注意深く耳を傾けると、ワイキキ本来の声が聞こえてきます。鳥のさえずり、風に吹かれて、カサカサと音を立てる木立、波が海岸で砕け散る音です。

month of March
flowers bloomed last year
snow falls this year

In the last two years, the weather became warm at least one month earlier than before, making me run hurriedly for planting seeds and preparing soil. This year, I have been psyching myself up to get ready for an earlier spring. Alas, things do not turn as expected. It still snows in March. Records shows that the last time it was this cold was 30 years ago.

一昨年に続いて昨年は、以前に比べて暖かくなるのがひと月余り早く訪れ、種まき苗育てに慌てました。今年は不意打ちを食わないようにと、心の準備をしていたのですが、あにはからんや、3月に入っても降雪。３０年ぶりの寒さとのことです。

On Saturday, the 16th of February, I volunteered to help at the Bacon Festival in Des Moines. This festival celebrates the importance of pork and pork products like bacon to Iowa. A delegation from Yamanashi also attended this year and sold sake and eggplants wrapped in bacon. The delegation from Japan was invited because of the sister state relationship that started when Iowa sent pigs to Yamanashi in 1960 after two terrible typhoons. The delegation members were mostly college students and businessmen. Interestingly, I volunteered to help the Japan America Society of Iowa with spreading information about Japanese culture at the event. We were located next to the delegation from Yamanashi. Many of us wore yukata as an example of Japanese culture. I tried to make my obi look like bacon.

　２月１６日土曜日、私はデモイン市で行なわれたベーコン フェスティバルで、ボランティアをしました。このフェスティバルは、アイオワ州にとって豚肉やベーコンのような豚肉製品の大切さを心に刻む為のものです。山梨県からの代表団も参加して、日本酒やなすのベーコン巻きを売っていました。デモイン市と甲府市との姉妹関係は、１９５８年に結ばれ、山梨県とアイオワ州との姉妹関係は１９６０年に樹立されました。山梨県とアイオワ州との姉妹関係は、二度の台風災害に遭った山梨県に対し、アイオワ州が豚を贈ったことに始まります。この関係から代表団が招待されました。代表団のメンバーは、主に大学生とビジネスマンでした。興味深いことに、私は、アイオワ日米協会でボランティアをする機会に恵まれ、このフェスティバルで日本文化を広めるお手伝いをしました。私達は山梨県の代表団の隣りに陣取りました。私たちメンバーの多くは、日本文化の一つの例として、ゆかたを着ました。私は帯がベーコンに見えるように作ろうと思いました。

On March 10, daylight saving time begins. However, yards are covered with snow and long icicles are hanging from roofs. It is hesitating to say “Summer will be here soon.”

3月10日にサマータイムが始まります。時計を一時間すすめますが、屋外に目をやると、庭は一面の雪、屋根からは長いつららが下がり、サマータイムに変えるのが少々はばかられます。
