Air temperature starts going up. Spring has arrived noisily with winds and hail.
気温が上がってきたのは春到来のサインで結構なのですが、大風やあられも同時到来。騒がしい幕開けです。

flooding
towns along rivers
new islands

水溢れ川沿いの町島となり
みず あふれ　かわぞい の まち　しまとなり

strong wind
push forward in the town

Snow melt. Once it starts, there is no way to stop. Once-beautiful snow turns to water and runs towards the lowest levels. Everything on its way, highways, bridges and town streets, becomes rivers!

雪は溶け始めると待ったなし。止める手段もあらばこそ。山や平野を覆っていた雪は水と代わり、低地へ低地へと流れ、高速路も橋の上も見渡す限り一面の川となってしまいます。

In Iowa, there was a new record for the amount of snow in the month of February. As a result, when the weather suddenly got warmer in March, as the snow melted quickly, the rivers were filled with water. Unfortunately, this meant that there was a lot of flooding. The flooding was worst in western Iowa near Nebraska. It is sad that some towns were covered with water. Even near my home, there were some signs of flooding. I hope the worst part is now over.

　今年、アイオワ州では、二月の積雪量の記録を更新しました。その結果、三月になって急に天気が暖かくなり、雪が急速に溶けたので、川の水が増水しました。そして、残念ながら、たくさんの洪水が発生しました。アイオワ州西部やネブラスカ州の近くが最悪でした。いくつかの町が洪水で水浸しになったのは悲しいことです。私の家の近くでさえ、洪水の兆候がいくつかありました。最悪の事態は終わったことを願っています。

In Hawaii there are two types of stars. One at night and one in the day. The nighttime stars are in the sky, shiny and bright. The daytime star is a fruit, green and on the ground. The first time I saw Star Fruit was in Hawaii. It looked strange and I was a little scared to eat it. But after the first bite I fell in love. Now I am a star chaser.

　ハワイには、２種類の星があります。一つは、夜、もう一つは、昼です。夜の星は、空で明るく輝いています。昼の星は、地上で緑色に実る果実です。私がスターフルーツを初めて見たのは、ハワイでした。それは少し変な形をしていたので、食べるのが少し怖かったです。しかし、一口食べてみて、一度で心を奪われました。今や私は、大のスターフルーツ好きです。

As the month of March is close to ending, the whale watching season is also starting to slow down. In one month the whale sightings have dropped sharply. Now one day there may be many sightings and then the next day none. I am now experiencing tours where one tour there are spouting whales but the next few tours there are none even though the tour is held in the same area. The whale watching tours end towards the end of April and then we have to wait until November for our returning whales!

　３月もそろそろ終わります。ホエール ウォッチングの季節もまた終わりが近づいています。ここ一か月、鯨を目撃することが急に少なくなりました。今の時期、ある日は、たくさん目撃できたとしても、次の日は、まったく見つからないと言った状態です。また、ある時は、一回目のツアーでは鯨の潮吹きを見ることができたとしても、同じ場所なのに、次のツアーでは、まったく見当たらないと言った状態です。今は、そんなことを、毎日、経験しています。ホエール ウォッチング ツアーは４月の終わり頃、終了します。その後11月まで、戻ってくる鯨を待つ必要があります。

This past Sunday, March 10, was the 25th anniversary of the Honolulu festival. There was a special fireworks show that lasted 25 minutes. The fireworks were from the famous Nagaoka fireworks. The fireworks were shot from 3 separate barges just off shore close to where the Honolulu zoo is located. Every Friday evening there are the Aloha Friday fireworks but those last only 5 minutes and are shot off from one boat. They are nice but can’t compare to the Nagaoka fireworks. Since they are shot off from 3 different boats simultaneously it is a much more elaborate show. The design of the Nagaoka fireworks are much more elaborate where the Friday night fireworks are much more simple. There were many people at the show and everybody seemed to have been very happy with the show as they clapped many times during the show and at the end everybody clapped for a long time.

　２０１９年３月１０日に開催された、ホノルル・フェスティバルは、２５周年でした。それを記念して、２５分間続く、特別の花火大会がありました。花火は、新潟県長岡市の人達の手によって、ホノルル動物園のすぐ近くの沖合にある三艘のはしけから打ち上げられました。ホノルルでは、毎週金曜の夜、アロハ フライデーの花火大会があります。それは、ヒルトン ハワイアン ホテルの前の洋上に浮かぶ一艘のはしけから打ち上げられます。花火は、５分間だけです。これも素晴らしいですが、長岡花火とは比べ物になりません。長岡花火は、同時に三艘のはしけを使いますから、はるかに手の込んだ仕掛けです。長岡花火のデザインは、凄く精巧ですが、アロハ フライデーの花火は、単純です。花火大会には、たくさんの人出がありました。そして、大会の間、皆さん、何度も拍手をし、終わった後は、いつまでも拍手を送っていました。誰もが、大変満足していたようです。

This week I attended a class on how to make shogayaki pork. The class was held at a local elementary school in Des Moines. The teacher was Japanese. There were six students in the class that were all Americans. The students were a mix of men and women. The teacher gave us the ingredients which included pork loins, ginger, onions, mirin, soy sauce, and sugar. First, we cooked the pork loins in a frying pan until lightly brown. Then, we mixed the ginger, mirin, soy sauce and sugar in a cup. After that, we fried the onions in the frying pan. After pouring the cup into the frying pan, we put the pork back in to finish cooking. When the pork was cooked, we removed the pork, but continued frying the onions. Finally, we poured the onions and the juices in the pan over the pork to add flavor. We ate the food that we made in the class and still had enough to take home. I enjoyed learning more about Japanese cuisine but the best part was definitely eating the delicious food!

　今週、地元、デモイン市の小学校で開催された、しょうが焼きの作り方教室に参加しました。先生は日本人で、クラスには、男女あわせて６人の生徒が参加しました。必要な食材、豚ロース肉、生姜、みりん、しょうゆ、砂糖、玉ねぎなどは、すべて先生が用意して下さいました。私たちは、まず、肉をフライパンで、両面が、こんがりキツネ色になるまで焼きました。肉が焼き上がると、一旦、お皿に移し、一方、カップに、すりおろした生姜とみりん、醤油、砂糖などの調味料を入れ、合わせました。その後、玉ねぎをフライパンで炒め、その上に、先ほど作った調味料を注ぎました。次に、肉をフライパンに戻し、たまねぎや合わせた調味料とからめました。肉が出来上がると肉だけお皿に移し、玉ねぎは、もうしばらく火を通しました。最後に、風味を付ける為に、調味料とからめた玉ねぎを肉にかけました。私たちはクラスで作った料理を食べました。そして、残りは、家に持って帰りました。日本料理の勉強が気に入りました。しかし、美味しい料理を食べることが、勿論、一番大切な部分です。
