I decided to try making tonkatsu at home. First, I found a recipe in a book. Then, I went and purchased all the ingredients. I bought pork loins, avocado oil, eggs, Hawaiian bread rolls, and flour. Next, I cut the pork into thin slices. After that, I shredded the rolls into breadcrumbs. I then separated the flour, breadcrumbs, and eggs in to three different bowls. At this point, the eggs had to be beaten. In addition, I put the oil in a pan and pre-heated it to 340 degrees Fahrenheit. Each slice of pork was then individually dipped in the three bowls. Finally, I put each piece of pork in the oil and fried each one until both sides turned brown. My tonkatsu tasted good even though it did not look as good as tonkatsu from a restaurant.

My other job is I work on a glass bottom tour boat. My job is to do the narration along with finding turtles and in the winter season whales. This past week there was a cold front that went through the islands. The wind was a strong North West wind that along the rain made my job very difficult. The customers are always in an area that protects them from the rain but I am often in an unprotected area. The customers were very happy as they saw turtles, dolphins and whales but unfortunately I ended up getting very sick!

For me, one of the nicest landmarks in the Waikiki area is Ala Moana Park. The park is very big and has a beach that rivals Waikiki beach. In the park is an area called Magic Island. It is called magic because from the air it looks like an island but it is because of the surrounding Ala Wai harbor that it looks like an island. The whole park was originally supposed to be hotels and condominiums in the 1950’s but the company that was going to build it went out of business and the City and County of Honolulu purchased it and decided to make it a park instead. Many TV shows and commercials are shot there and it is a signature for the Waikiki area.

Collaborative Haiku Poem −

big snow
when was the last time?
Nine years ago

green, green
garden shows on TV
cabin fever!

(Yoko version)

(Michiko version)

Snowfall has been decreasing year by year since 2010. Hopefully, this winter’s big snow can offset the decrease, but most likely not. Why do I remember that the last big snow was in 2010? In 2010, we started the life with Nube the husky who came with the rented house. Snow mountain I made with snow in the yard for the snow-loving Nube became smaller every year afterward. Regrettably, Nube passed away 2 years ago without witnessing this big snow.

A silvery world after snow is off course wonderful, but, seeing gardens and botanical yards with luscious green on TV is refreshing as if finding something forgotten. Is it cabin fever?

Haiku Poem –

San Antonio
Alamo is the landmark
my home is here

(Olivia version)

(Michiko version)

San Antonio is America’s seventh largest city. Despite this, San Antonio feels like a big town instead of a city. There are lots of restaurants and parks in the city. It’s most famous landmark is the Alamo, where Texans first fought for their independence from Mexico. The weather in San Antonio can be very hot too. In a big city like New York, you can get lost. People are rude and are always in a hurry. In San Antonio, people will stop and help. They will say hello.

Haiku Poem –

scorching sun

(Rebecca version)

(Michiko version)

Here in Queensland Australia, December , January and February is the summer season. Here in the lovely coastal strip of Queensland, during summer everybody is talking about the exceedingly hot climate brushing the sweat from their brow and looking for shade or an air conditioned area. In our spare time we very much enjoy swimming in the lakes rivers or at the ocean which is never too far away in the splendid Sunshine state of Queensland in summer.
