This past December my wife and I celebrated our 30th year Anniversary! Since that time of the year is very busy for us we were not able to go anywhere and may take a short trip when it is not busy. Instead, we went to what may people consider is the best sushi restaurant in Oahu for our Anniversary dinner. It was extremely expensive but the best sushi I have ever eaten! Unfortunately, since it was so expensive I won’t be able to eat there until our next 30 years have gone by! I can’t believe that 30 years has gone by! It really has gone by in a flash! It seems like we were going over our wedding plans yesterday and all of a sudden we are celebrating our 30th Anniversary. The years we spent in Japan and the years following our return to Hawaii are just a blur! So now we look forward to our next 30 years!

　去年、私たち夫婦は、３０回目の結婚記念日を迎えました。しかし、その時期は、非常に忙しい時なので、どこにも行くことができませんでした。忙しくない時期に小旅行をするかも知れません。その日は、代わりに、オアフ島で評判の寿司屋さんで結婚記念日の夕食をしました。すごく高かったですが、今までで最高のお寿司でした。残念ですが、その店は、すごく高いので、次の３０年が来るまで行けません！　結婚して３０年も経ったなんて信じられません。それは本当に一瞬の出来事でした。まるで、昨日、結婚式の計画を練っていたのに、突然、結婚３０周年を迎えたような気持ちです。日本で過ごした時間とハワイに戻って過ごした時間は、あっと言う間に過ぎました。次の３０年を楽しみにしています。

Now that the second partial federal government shutdown in February was avoided, we can appreciate outdoor snow scape.

The first partial federal government shutdown lasted 35 days, the longest in US history, from last December to this January, was caused by the disagreement between President Trump and the congress on the fund to build the wall on the border between Mexico and the U.S. Even though the shutdown affected parts of the government that are considered non-essential to daily life, such as the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the US Food and Drug Administration and Bureau of Land Management, people who worked in those departments went 35days without pay. Thus, eventually, every citizen would be affected.

皆、ホッと息をついています。雪風景にも目をやる余裕も出るというものです。
零下の気温が続いているので、枯れ枝に積もった雪も春まで根雪となります。

昨年から今年初めにかけての35日（記録では最長）の連邦政府閉鎖 partial federal government shutdown は、再度2月に繰り返す危険ありでしたが、トランプ大統領と議会の話し合いで避けることができました（とはいえ、新たな問題が発生していますが）。事の起こりは、米国とメキシコの境界に建設中の壁の資金を巡って、大統領と議会の意見が一致しないことです。政府閉鎖は日常生活に影響しないとみられる部門なのですが、その部門に働く人々は給与なしとなるので大問題です。今回の危機はなんとか乗り越えましたが、大統領と議会の意見の相違が直ちに政府閉鎖となるので、落ち着かない気持ちには変わりません。

久しぶり餃子を作る不器用さ

I recently tried to make gyoza for the first time in many years. I bought ground beef, gyoza wraps, garlic and green onions. First, I mixed the ingredients. Next, I put the mixture on the gyoza wraps. In order to seal the gyoza wraps, I had to apply water to the skin of one side of the gyoza so that it would stick to the other side when pinched together. My first attempt turned out very ugly because I forgot how to wrap the gyoza. In fact, I tried to make it like a burrito. I looked at some pictures and then remembered to pinch the gyoza to close them properly. Lastly, I heated the gyoza in a frying pan until cooked thoroughly. I ate the finished gyoza with a mixture of soy sauce, vinegar and sesame oil that I made by myself.

　最近、私は、久しぶりに餃子作りに挑戦しました。牛のひき肉、餃子の皮、にんにく、そして、ねぎを買ってきて、まず、材料を混ぜ合わせました。次に、作った具を餃子の皮の上に乗せました。餃子を包む為に、皮の一方のふちに水をつけ、反対側に貼り付けます。一回目は、餃子の包み方を忘れていたので、残念ながら形の悪いものになりました。実は、メキシコ料理のブリートのように作ってみたかったのです。インターネットで餃子の作り方の画像を何枚か見て思い出しました。餃子の皮をつまんで、ひだを作ることが必要でした。最後に、餃子をフライパンで、しっかり焼き、醤油と酢とごま油を混ぜた自家製のタレにつけて食べました。

I attended a free yoga class. The teacher said that we must focus on breathing. We were supposed to breathe in for six seconds before breathing out for six seconds during each movement. Like a reed in the wind, we had to bend forward and backwards while controlling our breath. It was good exercise. The breathing helped us to concentrate.

　私は、無料のヨガクラスに参加しました。先生は、クラスの中で、呼吸に意識を集中させて下さいとおっしゃいました。一つ一つの動作は、息を、六秒かけて、ゆっくり吸い込み、そして、六秒かけて、ゆっくり吐き出しながら行ないます。呼吸をコントロールしながら、風に吹かれる葦のように、体の軸を前後左右に曲げなければなりません。良い運動になりました。教えて頂いた呼吸法は、集中力を維持するのに役立ちました。

Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) is a jewel beetle native to north-eastern Asia that feeds on ash species. The insect is not considered in its native range to be noxious, but just a nuisance. Outside its native range, it is an invasive species and is highly destructive to ash trees native to northwest Europe and North America.

Low temperature at the end of January this year (-14 Fahrenheit) led us to hope that the EAB was eradicated. But, alas, the temperature was not low enough nor long enough to kill the insect. Beside, the insect is able to produce antifreeze chemicals. It appears that many more days of research are needed to control the EAB epidemic.

　EABは Emerald Ash Borer エメラルド アッシュ ボーラーの略で,　アッシュ（とねりこ）の木を穿って、ついには倒してしまう昆虫のことです。EABの原生地は東北アジア（日本を含む）ですが、原生地においてはこの昆虫は害虫とはみなされず、原生地以外において初めて害虫とみなされます。すなわち、原生地では、原生地のアッシュの特性、寄生スズメバチなどの天敵の存在のおかげで、昆虫数が制御されています。

この昆虫は北米侵入以来、東部から西部へと広がり、東隣のアイオア州からネブラスカ州には約3年前に到着。対策としては、殺虫剤あるいは伐採が挙げられていますが、共に高価な上に環境破壊に繋がるので実行する人は少なく、多くは手をこまねいているのが現状です。先日テレビのニュースによると、一月末の零下１４度（華氏）の低温が昆虫にも影響があったのではとの期待されましたが、残念ながらこの程度の低温では影響がなく、さらにEABは antifreeze chemicals（抗冷凍化学物質）を作ることができるとのことで、EAB問題の解決にはかなりの日数がかかりそうです。
