In some of my previous Haiku poems I have used the changing of the seasons in Hawaii as a theme. As the summer is drawing to a close there will start to be subtle changes in both the land scape and the ocean which signal the changing of the seasons. One location where there is a very dramatic difference between the summer and the winter is Diamond Head. In the summer the outside of the mountain is brown because of the direct sunlight and the lack of rain. In the winter it is a beautiful green because of the rains that are almost an everyday occurence in the early morning and the evening. With the onset of fall the brown color slowly changes to green and in the spring season the color starts to go from a beautiful lush green to a rusty brown color. I have a great view of Diamond Head everyday from the boat so I am able to watch the colors slowly change.

　私が、以前、ハワイについて書いたハイクポエムでは、よく季節の変化をテーマとして取り上げました。オアフ島では、夏が終わりに近づくにつれ、陸と海、双方に、微妙な季節の変化を知らせるきざしが現れます。夏と冬で、劇的に変化する場所はダイヤモンドヘッドです。夏には、雨があまり降らない上に、厳しい直射日光の為、その外観は茶色です。冬には、早朝と夜、ほとんど毎日、雨が降りますから美しい緑色になります。秋になると、茶色の外観は少しずつ緑色に変わります。春には、青々した緑の色は少しずつ茶色に変わり始めます。私は、毎日、船からダイヤモンドヘッドを見ているので、ゆっくり色が変化していくのを見ることができます。

squirrels scurry
sunflower seeds
ripening

(Yoko version)
栗鼠駆けるひまわりの種熟しおり
りすかける　ひまわり の たね　じゅくしおり

squirrel
run up to sunflower seeds
preparation for winter

(Michiko version)
冬支度ひまわりの実にリス遊ぶ
ふゆじたく　ひまわり の み に　りすあそぶ

A sunflower named “mammoth” grew vigorously reaching very high. Seeds are packed in the flower center. Squirrels which love sunflower seeds must surely be looking forward to the time when seeds are ripe. Sure enough, squirrels which are not seen during hot summer days start showing up now and then, as if scouting the seed progress.

マンモスという名のひまわりを植えました。ぐんぐん見上げるほどに高く育ち、中心部には種がびっしり。ひまわりの種が好きな栗鼠が喜ぶに違いないと思うこちらの心を読むが如く、夏の暑い盛りには見かけなかった栗鼠の姿を垣間見るこの頃です。
