I attended a free yoga class. The teacher said that we must focus on breathing. We were supposed to breathe in for six seconds before breathing out for six seconds during each movement. Like a reed in the wind, we had to bend forward and backwards while controlling our breath. It was good exercise. The breathing helped us to concentrate.

　私は、無料のヨガクラスに参加しました。先生は、クラスの中で、呼吸に意識を集中させて下さいとおっしゃいました。一つ一つの動作は、息を、六秒かけて、ゆっくり吸い込み、そして、六秒かけて、ゆっくり吐き出しながら行ないます。呼吸をコントロールしながら、風に吹かれる葦のように、体の軸を前後左右に曲げなければなりません。良い運動になりました。教えて頂いた呼吸法は、集中力を維持するのに役立ちました。

EAB
survive the cold

Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) is a jewel beetle native to north-eastern Asia that feeds on ash species. The insect is not considered in its native range to be noxious, but just a nuisance. Outside its native range, it is an invasive species and is highly destructive to ash trees native to northwest Europe and North America.

Low temperature at the end of January this year (-14 Fahrenheit) led us to hope that the EAB was eradicated. But, alas, the temperature was not low enough nor long enough to kill the insect. Beside, the insect is able to produce antifreeze chemicals. It appears that many more days of research are needed to control the EAB epidemic.

　EABは Emerald Ash Borer エメラルド アッシュ ボーラーの略で,　アッシュ（とねりこ）の木を穿って、ついには倒してしまう昆虫のことです。EABの原生地は東北アジア（日本を含む）ですが、原生地においてはこの昆虫は害虫とはみなされず、原生地以外において初めて害虫とみなされます。すなわち、原生地では、原生地のアッシュの特性、寄生スズメバチなどの天敵の存在のおかげで、昆虫数が制御されています。

この昆虫は北米侵入以来、東部から西部へと広がり、東隣のアイオア州からネブラスカ州には約3年前に到着。対策としては、殺虫剤あるいは伐採が挙げられていますが、共に高価な上に環境破壊に繋がるので実行する人は少なく、多くは手をこまねいているのが現状です。先日テレビのニュースによると、一月末の零下１４度（華氏）の低温が昆虫にも影響があったのではとの期待されましたが、残念ながらこの程度の低温では影響がなく、さらにEABは antifreeze chemicals（抗冷凍化学物質）を作ることができるとのことで、EAB問題の解決にはかなりの日数がかかりそうです。

On the west side of Oahu one of the special tours that are offered is the dolphin watch tour. It is very rare to go out on that tour and not see dolphins. The south side of the island which is where Waikiki is the situation is much different. Dolphins are often seen but not like the west side of the island. A typical example is I may see them a few days in a row and then go a week or so with out seeing them. I do not know why there is such a difference but after asking many scuba diving Instructor’s opinions the consensus is that there is probably more food on the west side. The dolphins that I often see are either spinner dolphins or the larger bottle nose dolphins. As their name shows, the spinner dolphins jump out of the water and spin while the larger bottle nose dolphins will also jump but will not spin in the same way.

　オアフ島の西側で行なわれる特別なツアーの一つに、イルカ・ウォッチング・ツァーがあります。このツアーに参加して、イルカを見られなかったと言うことは、めったにありません。一方、ワイキキのある島の南側では、状況が大きく異なります。島の南側でもイルカは度々見ることができます。しかし、島の西側ほどではありません。典型的な例は、南側では、イルカが、数日、立て続けに姿を現しても、その後、１週間、あるいは、それ以上、姿を現さないことがあります。なぜ、そのような違いがあるのか私にはわかりません。何人ものダイビング・インストラクターに尋ねたのですが、島の西側には、多分、もっとたくさんの餌があるのではないかという結論に落ち着きました。私がよく見かけるイルカは、ハシナガ・イルカか、それより大きいハンドウ・イルカです。名前が示すように、ハシナガ・イルカはジャンプし、海面でくるりと回転します。ハンドウ・イルカは、ジャンプしますが、回転はしません。

In Iowa, there is so much snow that everywhere looks white. Recently, there have been three blizzards. As a result, almost a half meter of snow has accumulated. It has also become really cold. For example, the temperature now is nine degrees below zero (in Celsius). Due to the snow and the ice, no one wants to go outside.

　アイオワ州では、あちこちにたくさん雪が降ったので、あたり一面真っ白です。最近、三回、吹雪になりました。その結果、五十センチぐらい雪が積もりました。また、非常に寒くなりました。例えば、今、温度は零下９度です。雪と氷の為、誰も外に出たくありません。

In 1950s, New Orleans in the State of Louisiana was the major port of entry for bananas shipped from Central and South America. In 1951, Chef Paul Blang of Brennan’s, a restaurant in New Orleans , created Banana Foster, named after a customer, Richard Foster. The dish is known for the dramatic flames of heated banana liqueur and dark rum (or flambé). It has become an international favorite.

1951年代、ルイジアナ州ニューオーリンズは中南米からのバナナの集散地でした。バナナフォスターはその地のレストランの一つ、ブレナンのシェフが1951年に創作し、今や世界中に知られています。テーブルサイドでバナナリッカーとカリブ海地方産のラム酒を点火して派手に炎を上げるところに人気があります。
