In the middle of March, I went to watch some teams practice basketball. However, this was no ordinary practice. The teams were getting ready to play in the most important college basketball tournament in the United States. Although the tournament games are held in many different cities, Des Moines was hosting several games in the first round. This was the first time that the tournament ever came to Des Moines, so it was very exciting. Unfortunately, the game tickets were extremely expensive. The tickets were all over $100. So, I went to watch the teams practice because the practice was free and open to the public. I was supporting the team from Minnesota. I was happy when they won their first game. But, then they lost their second and were out of the tournament.

　三月中旬、私はバスケットボールの練習を見に行きました。しかし、これは、いつもの練習ではありません。それぞれのチームは、アメリカで最も大切な試合、全米大学バスケットボール トーナメントでプレーする準備をしていました。 トーナメント ゲームは、いろいろな町で開催されます。デモイン市では、第１ラウンドで、いくつかのゲームを主催しました。このトーナメントがデモイン市にやって来たのは、今回が初めてだったので、わくわくしました。残念ながら、試合の入場券は非常に高かったです。一枚、少なくとも百ドルでした。ですから私は、練習を見に行くことにしました。練習は、無料で一般に公開されていたからです。試合では、私は、ミネソタのチームを応援しました。一回戦に勝った時は、嬉しかったです。しかし、二回戦で負け、敗退しました。

Spring has come to Hawaii! As all of our seasons here, the change is very subtle. In each season different flowers bloom which is an excellent way to tell that the season is changing. I ride my bike to work and just taking my time I am able to enjoy all of the many flowering trees along the way. It is almost like a flower garden from my house to my job! The flowers that bloom in the Spring soon fall off the tree and green leaves take their place. The ground is littered with beautiful pink, yellow and red flowers!

　ハワイに春が来ました。ここ、ハワイでは、季節の変化は非常に微妙です。しかし、季節ごとに違った花が咲き、それが季節の変化を正確に伝えてくれます。私は自転車で仕事へ行きます。ゆっくり走って行く道すがら、花の咲く木をいくつも楽しむことができます。自宅から仕事場まで、まるで花園のようです。春の花は、咲くとすぐ散ります。そして、緑の葉に代わります。地面には、美しいピンク色の花、黄色の花、赤い花が散らばっています。

Air temperature starts going up. Spring has arrived noisily with winds and hail.
気温が上がってきたのは春到来のサインで結構なのですが、大風やあられも同時到来。騒がしい幕開けです。

flooding
towns along rivers
new islands

水溢れ川沿いの町島となり

strong wind
push forward in the town
snow water

Snow melt. Once it starts, there is no way to stop. Once-beautiful snow turns to water and runs towards the lowest levels. Everything on its way, highways, bridges and town streets, becomes rivers!

雪は溶け始めると待ったなし。止める手段もあらばこそ。山や平野を覆っていた雪は水と代わり、低地へ低地へと流れ、高速路も橋の上も見渡す限り一面の川となってしまいます。

In Iowa, there was a new record for the amount of snow in the month of February. As a result, when the weather suddenly got warmer in March, as the snow melted quickly, the rivers were filled with water. Unfortunately, this meant that there was a lot of flooding. The flooding was worst in western Iowa near Nebraska. It is sad that some towns were covered with water. Even near my home, there were some signs of flooding. I hope the worst part is now over.

　今年、アイオワ州では、二月の積雪量の記録を更新しました。その結果、三月になって急に天気が暖かくなり、雪が急速に溶けたので、川の水が増水しました。そして、残念ながら、たくさんの洪水が発生しました。アイオワ州西部やネブラスカ州の近くが最悪でした。いくつかの町が洪水で水浸しになったのは悲しいことです。私の家の近くでさえ、洪水の兆候がいくつかありました。最悪の事態は終わったことを願っています。

In Hawaii there are two types of stars. One at night and one in the day. The nighttime stars are in the sky, shiny and bright. The daytime star is a fruit, green and on the ground. The first time I saw Star Fruit was in Hawaii. It looked strange and I was a little scared to eat it. But after the first bite I fell in love. Now I am a star chaser.

　ハワイには、２種類の星があります。一つは、夜、もう一つは、昼です。夜の星は、空で明るく輝いています。昼の星は、地上で緑色に実る果実です。私がスターフルーツを初めて見たのは、ハワイでした。それは少し変な形をしていたので、食べるのが少し怖かったです。しかし、一口食べてみて、一度で心を奪われました。今や私は、大のスターフルーツ好きです。

As the month of March is close to ending, the whale watching season is also starting to slow down. In one month the whale sightings have dropped sharply. Now one day there may be many sightings and then the next day none. I am now experiencing tours where one tour there are spouting whales but the next few tours there are none even though the tour is held in the same area. The whale watching tours end towards the end of April and then we have to wait until November for our returning whales!

　３月もそろそろ終わります。ホエール ウォッチングの季節もまた終わりが近づいています。ここ一か月、鯨を目撃することが急に少なくなりました。今の時期、ある日は、たくさん目撃できたとしても、次の日は、まったく見つからないと言った状態です。また、ある時は、一回目のツアーでは鯨の潮吹きを見ることができたとしても、同じ場所なのに、次のツアーでは、まったく見当たらないと言った状態です。今は、そんなことを、毎日、経験しています。ホエール ウォッチング ツアーは４月の終わり頃、終了します。その後11月まで、戻ってくる鯨を待つ必要があります。
