flooded field
agricultural sprinklers
standing alone

冠水の平野に佇む散水機
かんすいの　へいや に たたずむ　さんすいき

indistinguishable
lakes or arable lands
stretch miles

From Omaha to Kansas CIty, it takes about 3 hours-driving on the freeway to the South. Soon after leaving Omaha City, the scenery usually changes to the greens of corns and soybeans. Instead this time, there is water everywhere. Although the news of floods in towns along the Missouri river in Nebraska, Iowa and Missouri has been on TV, it is mind-boggling to actually see the fields submerged under water on both sides of the freeway. Oddly enough, after the mid-point between Omaha and Kansas City, there is no sign of flooding, as if flooding were an occurrence in another world.

　カンザス市へ行ってきました。オマハからは高速路を南へ３時間余。オマハ市街を離れてまもなく田園地帯となります。例年ならば見渡すかぎりトウモロコシや大豆が茂っているのですが、今年はその代わりに広い耕地は水の下。ミズーリ川沿いの町々の洪水の状況はテレビで見知っていますが、一面の耕地が湖と化し、農業道路が水の下に消えているのを実際に見ると圧倒されるばかりです。ところが、オマハとカンザス間の中間点を過ぎると、洪水の印は全く見えず、洪水はまるで別世界の出来事のようでした。

In the beginning of July, the ocean has been very rough on the south side of Oahu. Whenever there are strong trade winds which generally come from the North East and a strong current going the opposite direction such as a Diamond Head current then it is very rough. In my submarine job I tell everybody that the best place to sit is on the top deck in the middle and that after the submarine descends past 10 meters or 30 feet it becomes very calm. Unfortunately on the surface, the submarine is like being in a washing machine! Sometimes many customers get sea sick!

　七月初め、オアフ島の南側の海は非常に荒れました。夏の時期、普通、北東から強い貿易風が吹きます。もし、海水の流れがダイアモンドヘッドに向かうものであれば、貿易風と海水の流れは反対方向ですから波が大きくなります。もし、海水の流れがホノルル空港に向かうものであれば、同じ方向ですから、海の状態は穏やかです。潜水艦の仕事で、私はいつもお客様に、二階の真ん中あたりの席が一番良いと教えます。潜水艦は、１０メートル、（または、３０フィート）以上、降下すると非常に静かになります。しかし、残念ながら、降下中の潜水艦は洗濯機の中にいるようなものです。船酔いするお客様が大勢出ることもあります。
