Since I live near a small forest, it is not unusual to see animals near my home or in my backyard. In the winter, I often see deer. However, in the summer, I frequently see rabbits in my yard. The rabbits probably wait for the warm weather to come out and play. Although the rabbits probably eat some of my flowers, I think they also eat some weeds as well. Sometimes when I walk outside, I accidentally frighten the rabbits and they run away in all directions.

　私は小さな森の近くに住んでいます。ですから、家の近くや裏庭で動物を見るのは珍しいことではありません。冬には鹿を、夏には兎を、しょっちゅう見かけます。ところで、兎は、今の時期、外に出て遊べる、暖かい天気を待っている頃だと思います。しかし、実は、私の庭の花を食べたり、雑草を食べているようです。私が家の外に出ると、時々、ギョッとして、四方八方に逃げていくことがあります。

mochi ice cream

“Mochi ice creams” are the new item in the supermarket store I frequent. About ten different ice creams are wrapped in mochi, or soft dough made of rice flour. I was very impressed to find mochi in a regular supermarket, other than in Asian stores. While I was selecting several mochi ice creams, a Muslim women whose head was covered with a cloth stopped by and purchased mochi ice creams. She seemed to know what mochi was. That may explain why the sweet mango is the top seller of mochi ice creams.

　いつも行くスーパーの一角に、机大の冷凍庫が新しく設置されているのに気付き、近寄ってみると、”mochi ice cream”とあり、冷凍庫の中には抹茶味、コーヒー味、チョコレート味など、１０種類ばかりのアイスクリームを餅で包んだものが並んでいて、アジア食品店以外でも餅アイスを買えることに感激しました。数個箱に詰めていると、頭部をすっぽり布で覆った回教徒の婦人がやって来て、同じく数個買っていました。その様子からみると”mochi”のことは知っているようで、また、日本ではあまり見かけないマンゴー餡がすぐに売り切れる理由も納得できました。

One of the most beautiful hikes on Oahu is Stairway to Heaven. The trail is located on the Eastside of Oahu. The trail starts at base of a mountain and follows a ridgeline to the top. What makes the hike special is it consists of nothing but stairs. There are over 3,500 stairs that lead to the top. Some sections are flat while others are near vertical. Along the way there are rest stops and old buildings to explore. At the top there’s an abandoned military communications building to rest in. The view from the top is amazing as well, on a clear day you can see over 60% of Oahu. Sadly though, it is illegal to hike the trail.

　オアフ島には、「天国への階段」と呼ばれる場所があります。ここは、オアフ島で最も美しいハイキングコースの一つです。このコースは、オアフ島の東側にあります。道は山の麓から始まり、山頂まで尾根が続いています。このコースを特別なものにしているのは、それが階段以外に何もないと言うことです。階段は、頂上まで３５００段以上あります。何か所かは、平らですが、他は、ほぼ垂直です。途中、休憩所や古い建物があります。山頂には、放棄された米国海軍のラジオ局があります。頂上からの眺めは素晴らしく、おまけに、オアフ島の６０％以上を見ることができます。残念ながら、現在、このコースをハイキングするのは違法です。

In the middle of May at my Glass Bottom boat job I was told that I was needed to fill a Captain slot at the company. Even though I was very happy to have this opportunity I was also very nervous because I wanted to do a good job to show my Supervisor that it was the right decision to have me train as Captain instead of somebody else. I have been very fortunate to receive excellent advice and help from the other Captains. Even though it is a very satisfying and even fun job, I am not at the point where I can enjoy it 100 % because there are so many different things to learn and also so many things to be aware of. Each time I drive it becomes more comfortable and I will soon be able to enjoy the driving of the boat.

　私は、グラス ボトム ボートで働いています。この船は、船底に強化ガラスをはめこんだ遊覧船です。五月中旬、私は会社から、このボートの船長になるように言われました。こんな機会を得て、私はとても喜びました。しかし同時に、大変緊張しました。と言うのは、上司に満足のいく仕事ぶりを見せたかったからです。そして、上司に、他の誰でもない私を選んだのは正解だったと判断して欲しかったからです。私は他の船長から素晴らしい助言と手助けをいただきました。幸運でした。船長の仕事は、とても楽しく、満足できるものですが、今、私は、１００％楽しむことは出来ません。学ばなければならないことがたくさんあります。また、いろいろなことに注意を払わなくてはなりません。船に乗るたびに、より心地よいものになり、もうすぐ船を操縦することの楽しさも分かってくると思います。

It is a spectacular scene the way maple seeds fall to ground. It is similar to the falling of autumn leaves or ginkgo leaves. But, alas, a good thing does not last. You end up having maple sprouts all over the yard. In fact, seeds of all vegetation in your neighborhood show up.

　楓の種の散る様はまるで黄金のシャワー。その数何千、風に吹かれて舞落ちる様は見物です。勾玉の形の種は、一方の端にピー状の種があり、その部分を下にクルクルと円を描きながら下りて来ます。しかし、好事魔多し、地上に落ちた種はあらゆるところに芽を出して、抜いても抜いても生えて来ます。種は楓だけに限らず、柏、リンデン、その他近隣の全ての植物が芽を出しています。
