Collaborative Haiku Poem – 落ち葉と小鳥

falling leaves
invite little birds
join and dance

落葉に誘われ飛び舞う小鳥かな
らくよう に　さそわれ とび まう　ことり かな

little birds
dancing with shower leaves
stage in Autumn

枯葉飛ぶ空の舞台に小鳥舞う
かれは とぶ　そら の ぶたい に　ことり まう

When temperature goes down below the freezing point, it signals falling leaves, and outdoor color changes from summer green to autumn gold. Little birds fly in and out of the shower of falling leaves and become part of the autumn scene.

　気温が零下に下がるとそれを合図に落葉が始まります。窓外が金色に変わるのを見とれていると、小鳥が絵の一部に加えてくださいとばかりに、落葉のシャワーを出たり入ったりと元気に飛び回ります。

On a Saturday in Iowa, I went to Des Moines Grandview university to see a Noh performance for the first time. The actors traveled from New York to perform. I was surprised that all of the actors were Americans. They spoke in both Japanese and English. The performance included singing, dancing, instruments and costumes. The actors explained the different parts of Noh so that we would understand its traditions. For example, they explained that there are only four main instruments, three drums and one flute. Also, the actors sang three times in Japanese but one time in English to help us to understand what the songs really sound like. The most important part of the costume was the mask. Only at the very end of the performance did the actors put all the skills together and wear the masks. I learned a lot and can now appreciate this art form.

　アイオワでの土曜日、私は、能を見る為に、デモイン グランドビュー大学に行きました。能を見るのは初めてでした。四人の演者が、この公演の為にニューヨークからやって来ました。私は、演者全員が、アメリカ人だったので驚きました。彼らは、日本語と英語の両方で話しました。能のパフォーマンスには、歌、ダンス、楽器、衣装が含まれます。演者は、能の伝統を理解できるように、能のさまざまな部分を説明してくれました。例えば、四つの主要な楽器だけで、つまり、三つの太鼓と一つの笛だけで演奏すると説明してくれました。また、演者は、日本語で三回、英語で一回うたい、本当の謡曲が、どのように聞こえるかを理解できるようにしてくれました。衣装の最も重要な部分は、能面です。演者は、様々なパフォーマンスの最後になって初めて能面を付け、力を尽くして舞いました。私は多くのことを学び、この芸術形式を理解することができました。

hot skillet waits
vegetables and meat play
30 minute curry

flames below water
combine land and produce

One of the easiest meals to prepare is curry. All you need is 15 minutes, curry mix, and water. However, if you want to spice it up, you can add extras. I like to make curry with chicken or pork, potatoes, onion, garlic, and a Thai pepper. First I evenly cut the meat and vegetables. Then add them to skillet and cook until the potatoes are half way done. After that I had water and stir in curry mix. Once it comes to a boil, I cook it on low heat for another 15 minutes or so. Until the potatoes are soft. After the curry cools a little I eat it with rice and top it with cheese. All and all it takes about 30 minutes to make my curry.

　私にとって、準備が最も簡単な料理の一つはカレーです。必要なものは、１５分の時間とカレーミックス、そして、水だけです。しかし、深い刺激的な味にしたければ、いろいろな食材を入れることも出来ます。私は、鳥肉や豚肉、ジャガイモ、甘い玉ねぎ、ニンニク、そして、タイの胡椒を使います。その場合、まず、肉と野菜を均等に切ります。それからフライパンに入れ、ジャガイモが半分煮えるまで調理します。その後、水とカレーミックスを入れ、かき混ぜます。沸騰したら、じゃがいもが柔らかくなるまで、さらに１５分ほど弱火で煮込みます。カレーが少し冷めたら、ご飯にカレーをかけて、チーズをのせて食べます。私のカレーは、だいたい３０分ぐらいで出来上がります。

While a traditional Japanese house has white walls and tiled roofs, houses in America generally have shingled roofs and sidings.  Nowadays, many Japanese houses have mortar or concrete walls. Sidings of American houses also have changed from steel to vinyl. Since last week, steel sidings of our house have been replaced with vinyl ones. Hammering is very noisy to people inside the house.  But, this is an inconvenience that occurs only once in ten or twenty years.

　日本の伝統家屋は白壁に瓦葺きの屋根、これに対し、米本土の家屋は屋根がシングル（屋根板）で外壁がサイデイング（下見板）で囲ったのが一般的です。現在の日本では白壁の代わりにモルタルやコンクリートの外装が多くなったように、こちらのサイデイングも以前のスチール製からビニール製に変わっています。先週末から家のスチール製サイデイングをビニール製のそれに張替え中です。打ち込む釘の音はヴァイオリンの胴の原理で屋内に居るとガンガンと響きますが、10年か20年に一度のことと辛抱しています。

On October 12th, I went to visit a fire station. The fire station held a pancake breakfast. This event helped the fire station to raise money. It also gave people a chance to meet the firemen and to see the inside of a fire station. Each person was charged five dollars for a plate of pancakes. A piece of sausage and a carton of milk was also included. The firemen even added chocolate chips to some pancakes. While at the station, I got to see where the firetrucks are parked. I also got to see where the firemen keep their uniforms and equipment. There is also a place for the firemen to sleep at the station as well as a kitchen for them to cook meals. I met several firemen and they seemed very nice. I was happy to support the firemen and the fire station.

　１０月１２日に、私は消防署に行きました。消防署では、パンケーキの朝食を食べるイベントがありました。このイベントは、消防署が資金集めの為に行ないました。イベント参加者は、消防士に会ったり、消防署の内部を見学することができます。パンケーキは、一皿５ドルで、ソーセージ一個とミルクが付いていました。消防士の皆さんは、パンケーキにチョコレートチップも添えてくれました。消防署で、私は、消防車がとめてある所、そして、消防士の制服や装備を保管している所も見ることができました。消防士が署内で寝る所や食事を調理するキッチンもありました。私は何人かの消防士と話しました。彼らはとても素敵な人達でした。私は、消防士と消防署をサポートできて、非常にハッピーな気分になりました。
