collaborative Haiku Poem – Swiss Chard (ふだん草）

leafy vegetable
continual harvest
Swiss chard

菜は茂りあくせく収穫ふだん草
な は しげり　あくせく しゅうかく　ふだんそう

rainbow stems
grow quickly after the harvest
non-stop grass

虹の茎ぐんぐん育つ不断草
にじ の くき　ぐんぐん そだつ　ふだんそう

In our kitchen garden this summer, instead of usual cucumbers, tomatoes and eggplants, rainbow Swiss chard was planted. The stem of these chards are red, white and yellow, thus named rainbow. I was a little worried because this was the first time I grew leafy vegetables. The worries were unnecessary. The chard grew so well that harvesting often fell behind. It became trying to finish consuming the vegetable which kept growing. Japanese name for chard is Fudanso, or non-stop grass. How true!

　今夏はこれまでのキュウリ、トマト、なすの代わりにレインボースイスチャードを植えてみました。茎が赤、白、黄色と色とりどりであるところからレインボーの名が付いています。菜っ葉類を植えたのは初めてでしたので出来が心配でしたが、心配無用、収穫するのが間に合わぬほどどっさり出来、食べきるのに閉口しました。和名はふだん草（不断草）、全くその通りです。

On July 13th, I participated in my first Moonlight Classic biking event. This event is held once a year in Des Moines. Money that is raised supports mental health programs. The event is held at night so it is not a race. Since it is dark, safety is very important. So, all riders have to wear helmets and have lights on their bikes. The course for the event starts in the East Village, goes past the state capital, and then goes through and around downtown. The total distance is about 15 miles. The police stop traffic to prevent accidents. I really enjoyed the great views of downtown. Also, the bike ride was great exercise.

　７月１３日に、私は、初めて、ムーン ライト クラシックと言う自転車に乗るイベントに参加しました。このイベントは、デモイン市で年１回開催されます。このイベントでは、メンタル ヘルス プログラムを支援する為に募金を集めます。このイベントは、夜に開かれるのでレースではありません。暗くなると安全がとても重要です。ですから、参加者は全員、ヘルメットをかぶり、自転車にライトをつけなければなりません。コースは、イースト ビレッジから始まり、州都を通過して、ダウンタウンを通り抜けて行きます。合計距離は、約２４キロです。警察は、事故を防ぐために交通規制を行ないます。 私は、ダウンタウンの素晴らしい景色を心から楽しみました。また、自転車に乗るのは、素晴らしい運動でした。

These days I don’t have much time for the beach. Every day I am busy. I recently started a part-time job so I work 7 days a week. My main job is with the State of Hawaii, Department of Health. The part-time job is at a department store in the women’s shoe section. I work at the part-time 5 days a week, after my main job and on the weekends. The two jobs are completely different. At the main job, I sit in an office all day and look at a computer. At the part-time job I work in the stockroom picking shoes for customers. While the part-time job isn’t too hard, it is tiring. On the weekends I normally walk over 20 kilometers back and forth finding shoes. By the end of the day, I am dead tired. All I want to do is go home, shower, drink a beer, and go bed.

　近頃、ビーチに行く時間がありません。毎日、忙しい日が続いています。私は、最近、パートの仕事を始めたので、週七日間、働いています。私の本業は、ハワイ州政府保健局での仕事です。パートの仕事は、デパートの婦人靴売り場です。平日の五日間は、州政府の仕事が終わった後、六時から九時半まで、また、週末にも働きます。二つの仕事は、まったく違います。本業では、私は、一日中、オフィスでコンピューターを見ています。パートの仕事では、倉庫へ行ったり来たりして、お客さんの為に靴を探しています。この仕事は、それほど難しくありません。しかし、疲れます。週末には、靴を探す為、倉庫と売り場の間を、行ったり来たりして、たいてい２０キロ以上歩きます。仕事が終わる頃には、死ぬほど疲れています。私は、家に帰って、シャワーを浴びて、ビールを飲んで、寝たいだけです。

The day after the Fourth of July, I went to see a professional baseball game. The game was between the Iowa Cubs and the Memphis Cardinals. The Cubs fell way behind early. Then, a Japanese player named Junichi Tazawa emerged for the Cubs. He is a pitcher. He did very well at the end of the game and helped the Cubs to win. He threw the ball really well even though he acted like his shoulder hurt every time. Many people said that was just his habit. Tazawa pitched for many years in Boston and then worked with several other teams before joining the Cubs organization. Too bad for Tazawa, the Angels let him go before hiring Shohei Ohtani. I hope Tazawa has a good career with the Cubs.

　米国独立記念日の翌日、私はプロ野球の試合を見に行きました。試合は,アイオワ・カブスとメンフィス・カージナルスとの対戦でした。カブスは、早々に、かなり差をつけられていました。その後、田澤純一という日本人選手が登場しました。彼は投手です。彼は、試合の終盤、大変活躍し、カブスの勝利に貢献しました。彼は、一球投げるたびに肩が痛いような仕草をしていました。しかし、それにもかかわらず、好投しました。みんな、それは彼の癖だと言っていました。田澤は、長年、ボストンで投げていました。その後、いくつかのチームに所属した後、カブスに入りました。残念なことに、ロサンゼルス・エンジェルスは、大谷翔平を雇う前に、彼を解雇しました。田澤が、カブスで実績をあげることを願っています。
