There are many beers to choose from these days. Each type has its own taste and purpose. There are four types of beer I gravitate towards. Beers from Japan, from the US West Coast, barrel aged and dark beers. Japanese beers tend to be lighter and are good for drinking on hot days or with meals. Westcoast beers are usually full of flavor and change often. Darker beers tend to be a bit stronger and filling. So with those you don’t need much food. Barrel aged beers however are a little different. They are finished in wine or alcohol barrels, tend to be a bit stronger, and come in many varieties. While I like all of these styles, recently the barrel aged beers are my favorite.

　最近では、色々な種類のビールを選べるようになりました。それぞれのビールには、独自の味と目的があります。私は、４種類のビールに惹かれます。日本のビールと米国西海岸のビール、そして、樽熟成ビールと黒ビールです。日本のビールは、軽い傾向があり、暑い日や食事と一緒に飲むのに適しています。西海岸のビールは、風味豊かで、しかも頻繁に新しい味が出ます。黒ビールは、少し強くて、お腹にたまるので、たくさん食べる必要がありません。樽熟成ビールは、少し異なります。このビールは、ワインまたはアルコール樽で仕上げられ、少し強くなる傾向があり、また、多くの種類があります。私は、これらすべての種類が好きですが、最近では、樽熟成ビールが、一番のお気に入りです。

The last weekend in October, I went to a moon viewing event. The event was held at the National Arboretum in Washington DC. It was for members of the local Japan America Society. There were many activities at the event such as sake tasting, eating bento, listening to koto, and making mochi. I tried everything. I even pounded mochi by myself. Unfortunately, it was too cloudy to actually see the moon. The arboretum also had many beautiful bonsai on display. One of my favorite things was getting to eat the round egg that represented the moon.

　１０月の最後の週末に、私は、お月見のイベントに行きました。このイベントは、ワシントンＤＣ日米協会が、会員の為に、国立樹木園で開催しました。イベントでは、日本酒の試飲、弁当の試食、琴の演奏、餅つきなど、盛りだくさんな行事がありました。私は、すべて、やってみました。餅つきもしました。残念ながら、実際には、曇っていたので、お月様は見えませんでした。樹木園には、見事な盆栽がたくさん展示されていました。イベントの中で、私が気に入ったものの一つは、お月様を表わす、団子とゆで卵を食べることが出来たことです。

I have written before about Ala Moana Park. In the middle of the busy Waikiki there is the very large and spacious Ala Moana Park. There are so many uses in this park. Different events are held there along with everyday events such as picnics, parties, people exercising or simply going for a walk. Also, families getting together and even people walking their dogs. Even though it is in Waikiki, I would say that the majority of the people using it on a day by day basis are actually local people. Many local people can be seen every day in the morning going for their morning walk or swim and the same goes in the evening. There are some areas where the majority of the people are local because the tourists usually go to the beach or maybe jog around the park. I don’t believe they are familiar with everything the park has to offer.

　賑やかなワイキキの真ん中に、非常に大きく、広々としたアラモアナ公園があります。この公園には、色々な利用の仕方があります。ここでは、ピクニックやパーティー、あるいは、運動、散歩と言った日常の出来事とともに、様々なイベントが開催されます。ここでは、家族が集まったり、犬を連れて散歩している人もいます。たとえ、観光地ワイキキにあるとしても、毎日、ここを利用している人の大半は、実際、地元の人だと思います。毎朝、散歩やひと泳ぎする為にやって来る、たくさんの地元の人達を見ることが出来ます。また、夕方にも同じ光景を見ることが出来ます。アラモアナ公園の中の一角にいるのは、ほとんど地元の人達だけです。観光客は、大抵、ビーチに行くか、公園の外で、ジョッギングをするからです。観光客は、多分、アラモアナ公園の楽しみ方を十分に知らないと思います。
