When I lived in Japan and later in Australia there were some things that were similar in both countries but not found here. One area that I thought was very good was the area of recycling. In Japan and Australia the garbage collecting days are divided into garbage to be burned and not burned and there was also a day for items to be recycled. In Hawaii all the garbage is put in a land fill and cans and bottles can be taken to the various recycle centers but unfortunately we do not have a recycle collection. The garbage trucks are very big here while the are much smaller in Japan and Australia. I hope that some day we can adopt the same kind of recycling system that is used in those countries.

　私は、日本に住んだ後、オーストラリアに住みました。そして、日本やオーストラリアにあるのに、ハワイにないものをいくつか見つけました。私が非常に良いと思ったのは、リサイクルの分野でした。日本とオーストラリアでは、ごみ収集日は、燃えるごみの日と燃えないごみの日に分かれています。また、リサイクルの日もありました。ハワイでは、すべてのごみは埋め立て地に埋められ、缶やペットボトルは、リサイクル センターに持ち込まれます。残念なことに、ハワイには、リサクル システムはありません。ハワイのゴミ収集車は日本やオーストラリアより、はるかに大型です。私の希望は、いつか日本やオーストラリアのようなリサイクル システムが採用されることを願っています。

Back in June we decided to take a family trip to see a famous place near San Antonio. The place is known as a Texas safari because there are many different types of animals there. We saw giraffes, buffalo, rhinos, and many different types of deer. I drive around the place in our own vehicle and follow a road feeding the animals. Then I come back to the visitor’s center to pet the goats and see the monkeys. We all had a picnic after viewing all the animals and ended the day with some ice cream and a trip to the gift shop.

　私は、テキサス州、第２の都市、サンアントニオ市に住んでいます。この６月、私は家族と、サンアントニオ市の近くにあるテキサス サファリへ行くことにしました。ここは、いろいろな動物がいることで有名です。私たちは、キリン、バッファロー、サイ、そして、いろいろな種類の鹿を見ました。私は、道路に沿って自分の車を運転しながら、みんなで動物たちに餌をやりました。その後、ビジター センターに戻って、やぎをさわったり、さるを見たりしました。すべての動物を見たあと、ピクニックをしました。一日の最後に、アイスクリームを食べ、ギフトショップに行きました。

On August 18th, the Japanese America society of Minnesota hosted an Obon festival in Minneapolis. I went to see it. The flight from Virginia took about 2 and a half hours. The festival included three main parts. The first was food. There were many Japanese foods including takoyaki and onigiri. Second, there was Japanese merchandise. A lot of Japanese products like yukata were on sale. Lastly, there were martial arts demonstrations. The demonstrations included things like karate, kendo and archery. The location was called Como Park. The park is special because it has many gardens including a Japanese garden. The Japanese garden was a gift from Nagasaki. I liked the park and the festival.

　８月１８日、ミネソタ日米協会がミネアポリスでお盆祭りを開催しました。私はミネソタまで見に行くことにしました。バージニアから飛行機で二時間半ぐらいかかりました。祭りは、三部構成でした。一つ目は、日本の料理でした。たこ焼きやおにぎりなど、日本食がたくさんありました。二つ目は、日本の商品でした。浴衣（ゆかた）のような日本のものがたくさん販売されていました。最後は、武道のデモンストレーションでした。空手、剣道、弓道などのデモンストレーションが行なわれました。場所は、コモパークと言いました。この公園は、特別な公園です。日本庭園をはじめ多くの庭園があるからです。日本庭園は、長崎から来た造園家の指導のもとに作られました。私は、公園も祭りも両方、気に入りました。

I started to work in Virginia in July at the United States Patent and Trademark Office. This organization has about 13,000 people. The building that I work in is quite big. It has a large glass window in the front. The job of the office is to approve patents. The area around the building has a lot of trees. I like that the office is in a quiet area. Sometimes it is hard to believe that from the office it only takes about 20 minutes to drive to Washington DC.

　私は、七月からバージニア州の米国特許商標局で仕事を始めました。この組織には、大体、一万三千人の人がいます。私の勤務する建物は、非常に大きく、正面はガラス張りになっています。この組織の仕事は、特許の許可を出すことです。建物のまわりには、たくさんの木が茂っています。私は、静かな場所にある、このオフィスが気に入っています。時に、信じ難いと思うことは、オフィスからワシントンＤＣまで、車で２０分くらいしかかからないことです。

I have an apartment that is close to work. The apartment has one bedroom. It is in Virginia. The apartment is about a five minute walk from work. There are some restaurants and stores nearby. The location is very convenient. There is even a train station but it is undergoing renovation. Finding transportation will be easier after it is fixed. The only problem is that rent is expensive. Monthly rent in Virginia is frequently two thousand or more dollars.

　私のアパートは、オフィスのすぐ近くにあります。オフィスまで歩いて約５分です。アパートの大きさは、ワンベッドルームです。バージニア州にあります。近くに、何軒かレストランや商店があります。とても便利なところです。鉄道の駅もありますが、現在、改装工事中です。改装後は、利用し易くなります。唯一の問題は、家賃が高いことです。 バージニア州の家賃は、しばしば２０００ドル以上になります。

In the past I have written a haiku poem whose subject was the full moon and how beautiful the full moon looked in the sky. Today I wanted to write one on the beauty of the Hawaiian night sky with all of its beautiful stars. Sometimes at night when I look up at the stars they seem close enough to touch! When I am out on the boat at night the night sky is absolutely beautiful.

　以前、私は、夜空に浮かぶ満月の美しさを題材にしたハイクポエムを書いたことがあります。今日は、ハワイの夜空一面に輝く美しい星について書きたいと思いました。夜空に輝く星を見上げる時、手が届く所にあるのかと錯覚することがあります。船上から見上げる夜空は、文句なしに美しいです。

The first week of August Hawaii will have three hurricanes coming towards the islands. Of the three, only one will get close while the other two will be fairly far away. Even though they may be far from Hawaii, there will still be some windy days with bad ocean conditions. If the one hurricane gets too close then there are certain preparations that have to be done. For the submarines, they are actually sunk a foot or two under water. For the big shuttle boat and tug boats there are many lines put on them to keep them stationary in the event that the winds are really strong. This will be the same for the glass bottom boat that I work at. Another option is to take the boat out of water but if there is no good area to store it in then it is better off to leave it in the water.

　８月の最初の週に、三つの台風がハワイに近づきます。三つのうち、一つだけ接近しますが、他の二つは、かなり離れています。たとえ遠く離れていても影響はあります。風が強くて、海の状態が良くありません。台風が近づいてきたら、特別な準備をしておかなければなりません。潜水艦を１メートルくらい水中に沈めます。シャトルボートやタグボートには、強風に備えて、動かないようにロープをたくさん結び付けます。これは、私が働いているグラスボトムボートも同じです。もう一つの選択肢は、ボートを港から出すことです。しかし、適当な置き場所がない場合には、港にとどめる方が得策です。
