At the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, some people look at patents and other people look at trademarks. I look at patents. It is difficult because you have to work by yourself. Inventors will fill out an application. Then, they will submit it to the office. After that, we have to evaluate the invention. If we believe that the invention is really new, then we can approve a patent. The process can be long and difficult. However, the technology is interesting. People might think that we only see big inventions. Actually, we see lots of things like microwaves and hot water heaters. Every application is different and every one is important. It is nice to do something to help the public.

　米国特許商標庁には、特許を担当する人と、商標を担当する人がいます。私は特許を担当しています。この仕事は一人でこなす必要があるので簡単ではありません。発明者は、特許出願書類に記入します。そして、私たちの事務所に提出します。その後、私たちが、発明を審査する必要があります。発明が本当に新しいものだと確信した時、特許を承認します。このプロセスは長く、困難な場合もあります。しかし、技術は興味深いものです。人は、私たちが大きな発明だけを扱っていると思っているかもしれません。しかし実際は、電子レンジや温水器など多くのものを審査しています。特許出願書はすべて異なり、すべてが重要です。公の役に立てることは素晴らしいことです。

When I work at Atlantis on the submarines my main job is to do the narrations. At the end of the day I have a completely different job. I drive the tug boat that tows the submarine back to the harbor. Although it may seem to be a boring job it is one that I enjoy very much. I first drive the tug boat out to the submarine and pass the tow line to the staff on the submarine. Once it is all set I tow the sub back to the Honolulu harbor which takes a little over an hour. Once I am in the harbor the tug boat brings in the tow line and ties off to the side of the submarine. The last thing I do is direct one of the staff who is driving the sub with directions in how to get to our slip where we keep the submarine tied up. For me it is a very rewarding experience an a nice way to end the day!

　アトランティス潜水艦での私の主な仕事は、ナレーションです。しかし結局のところ、一日の終わりには、まったく異なる仕事もしています。タグボートで潜水艦を引っ張り、港に戻す仕事です。この仕事は、つまらない仕事のように見えますが、私は、とても楽しんでいます。最初に、タグボートを操縦して潜水艦まで持って行き、引き綱を潜水艦のスタッフに渡します。準備がすべて整えば、潜水艦をホノルル港に曳航します。一時間ちょっとかかります。港に着くと、引き綱を離して潜水艦の側面に繋ぎます。私が最後にやることは、潜水艦を操縦しているスタッフの一人に、潜水艦を止めて縛り付ける所への行き方を無線で指示することです。これは私にとって非常にやりがいのある経験であり、一日の終わりに気持ち良く仕事を終えます。

September is now here and for many people summer is now over. All the schools are now in session and the beaches are much more quiet as the local population here in Hawaii are either back to school or back to work. During the week the people on the beach will mainly be people on vacation who waited after the summer to come to Hawaii. Hotels and various travel agencies have great deals for Hawaii residents to travel to the other islands. Going during the week can be done at a very good price. This will continue until the Thanksgiving holiday in November.

　九月が来ました。地元の人にとっても、夏は終わりました。学校が始まり、ハワイの人達は、学校や職場に戻ったので、ハワイのビーチもずっと静かになりました。今、平日にビーチで遊んでいる人達は、料金の高い夏の終わるのを待って、ハワイに来た人達です。ホテルや旅行代理店は、地元住民が他の島に旅行する為の特別プランを提供しています。平日、他の島へ行くと、随分、安いです。このプランは、１１月の感謝祭の休日まで続きます。

Splendid Sydney The area around where I live is very lively and bustling with people on the go. There are so many things to do. From walking in the huge Centenial Park where people are riding horses or feeding the geese jogging or just relaxing in nature to the busy shopping centres full of things to buy and do. There is never a dull moment in splendid Sydney.

　シドニーは素晴らしいところです。私の住んでいる地域は活動的な人が多く、にぎやかで活気のある所です。ここには、非常に大きなセンテニアル公園があります。この公園で人は、乗馬をしたり、がちょうに餌を与えたり、ジョギングをしたり、自然の中でリラックスします。私は、この公園を散歩し、また、買いたいものが何でも揃う、ショッピングセンターで買い物をします。シドニーは素晴らしいところで、ここに住んでいて、退屈な時間はまったくありません。

I run about twice a week for exercise. I like to run outside. In the summer, it is best to run at sunset so it is not too hot. Fortunately, there are lots of sidewalks. I don’t like waiting for stop lights but because of busy traffic there is no choice. I often run to the river because it is a good distance. You can see the harbor and a casino across the river. There is a bridge that only cars use. When I get home, I am tired but feel energized from being outside.

　私は運動の為、週に２回ほど走っています。外を走るのが好きです。夏は、暑すぎないように、日没に走るのが一番です。幸いなことに、たくさん歩道があります。信号待ちは好きではありませんが、交通量が多いので仕方ありません。私は、よく川に向かって走っています。ちょうど良い距離だからです。川向こうに、港とカジノが見えます。川を渡る為に橋がありますが、車しか通れません。家に戻った時、疲れを感じます。しかし、外を走ることで、爽快な気分になります。
