I have no set time for lunch. I can go anytime. Normally, I leave at 11:45 but it can be earlier or later. I have a one hour lunch break. BUT! It is a 15 minute walk to and from downtown. So I really have 30 minutes. There are many restaurants in downtown. However if I don’t have a plan, I end up wasting my time looking for a place. Most of the places are about the same price, $10-$12. However, my budget is about $8 a day including weekends. Usually I can stay within budget but sometimes I want to be fat and order a lot of food. My wallet is mad about that but my stomach is happy.

　私の職場には、ランチの為の決まった時間はありません。昼休みは１時間と決められているだけで、いつランチに行っても問題はありません。私は、だいたい、１１時４５分前後に事務所を出ます。しかし、レストランのたくさんあるダウンタウンまで、片道、歩いて１５分かかります。往復３０分です。ですから、昼休みは、正味３０分です。ダウンタウンで、目当てがない場合は、店を選ぶのに時間を浪費することになります。ほとんどの店は、１０ドルから１２ドルで、ほぼ同じ値段です。ただし、私の予算は、週末を含めて１日約８ドルです。普通は予算内に押さえますが、時々、太りたくて、たくさん注文します。私の財布は怒りますが、私のお腹は喜びます。

A skill that I am currently learning when entering the harbor is to con the submarine into its slip. What this means is I am on the surface of the submarine using a radio to talk with the staff who is driving the submarine. That person can not see at all so I have to direct the staff on which way to turn and also what speed to use. This is a skill that takes lots of practice as there are many variables that affect the directions. Wind plays a very big role on the decision and also when making a decision to turn in a certain direction or to go at a certain speed there is always an opposite side that is being affected so that has to be taken into consideration. I am still in the learning process but each time I do it, it gets a little easier.

　最近、私が訓練しているスキルは、港に入る際、潜水艦を操縦しているスタッフに、潜水艦を接岸し、縛り付ける場所を無線で指示することです。つまり、私は潜水艦の甲板に立ち、無線で操縦スタッフと話します。潜水艦を操縦しているスタッフは、まったく見えないので、どの方向に曲がるのかとか、どのくらいの速度で進むのかを指示しなければなりません。方向に影響する変数が、たくさんある為、実践訓練の繰り返しが必要なスキルです。風は決定に重要な役割を果たします。また、特定の方向に曲がったり、特定の速度で進む決定をする際には、常に反対側が影響を受けるため、考慮に入れる必要があります。私は、まだ学習過程にありますが、回数を重ねるごとに、少しずつ慣れてきました。

Sydney meeting with my sons, what a wonderful rendezvous, after so long to reconcile and rejoin with grace and love . A brief but delightful day out and about together with my splendid sons in Sydney from savoring the iconic treasures, to relaxing over a refreshment, to the afternoon adventure finding a festive feast of delights at a banquet then racing through rush hour madness to the airport .. a short but so sweet brief but beautiful get together that soothes my soul.

　息子たちと、シドニーで待ち合わせをするのは、本当に嬉しいことでした。長い時間を経て恵まれた、やさしさと愛のある素晴らしい再会でした。時間は短くても戸外で過ごすシドニーの楽しい一日。誇らしい息子達と、あちこち巡り、シドニーのいろいろな価値あるものを見て回りました。軽い食事をして、くつろぎ、午後は、おいしいご馳走を一緒に楽しみました。そして、もの凄いラッシュアワーに悩まされながら空港まで急ぎました。短い時間でしたが、本当に楽しい時間であり、息子たちと共にする時間は、私の心を癒してくれました。

In the United States it is very easy to tell that Fall is now here. Along with the weather changing there are other events that herald the arrival of fall and the ending of summer. For example; the baseball season is coming to an end but football season has now started. Even though it is very early in September, most Department stores now have Halloween cards, candy and costumes for sale. Before Halloween is even here there will be advertising for Thanksgiving and of course all the Christmas advertising is close behind. It seems every year there is a shorter time between holidays since the stores advertise everything months in advance. I really think this actually cheapens the holiday into one big advertising campaign.

　アメリカでは、秋が来たことは、すぐに分かります。天候の変化とともに、秋の到来と夏の終わりを告げるイベントがあります。例えば、野球シーズンは終わりに近づき、フットボールシーズンが始まります。９月の非常に早い時期でも、ほとんどのデパートでは、ハロウィン カードや、キャンディー、衣装が販売されます。ハロウィンが終わる前に、感謝祭の広告があり、勿論、そのすぐ後に、クリスマスの広告も始まります。ほとんどの店は、何か月も前に広告を出しますから、毎年、休日と休日の間が短くなりそうです。このことは、休日が一大広告キャンペーンになってしまい、安っぽくなると思います。

Every morning when I go out to garden to harvest raspberries, bumblebees show up and fly among raspberry flowers to collect nectar. It is heartwarming to see more than 10 bumblebees, instead of one or two as in last year. Although the decrease of bumblebees has been reported, bumblebees appear to be on the road to recovery. I wish the same can be said of butterflies and honeybees.

　毎朝、庭に茂るラスベリー（木いちご）の収穫を始めると、必ず、マルハナ蜂（bumblebee）がやってラスベリーの花から花へと蜜を求めて飛び回ります。昨年は一匹か二匹しかいなかったのが今年は常時10匹以上が飛び交っているのを見るとホッとします（残念ながら数十匹とまではいきません）。マルハナ蜂の減少が報道され心配しましたが、どうやら回復への希望が持てそうです。しかし、蝶々や蜜蜂についてはそうとは言えないのは残念です。

At the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, some people look at patents and other people look at trademarks. I look at patents. It is difficult because you have to work by yourself. Inventors will fill out an application. Then, they will submit it to the office. After that, we have to evaluate the invention. If we believe that the invention is really new, then we can approve a patent. The process can be long and difficult. However, the technology is interesting. People might think that we only see big inventions. Actually, we see lots of things like microwaves and hot water heaters. Every application is different and every one is important. It is nice to do something to help the public.

　米国特許商標庁には、特許を担当する人と、商標を担当する人がいます。私は特許を担当しています。この仕事は一人でこなす必要があるので簡単ではありません。発明者は、特許出願書類に記入します。そして、私たちの事務所に提出します。その後、私たちが、発明を審査する必要があります。発明が本当に新しいものだと確信した時、特許を承認します。このプロセスは長く、困難な場合もあります。しかし、技術は興味深いものです。人は、私たちが大きな発明だけを扱っていると思っているかもしれません。しかし実際は、電子レンジや温水器など多くのものを審査しています。特許出願書はすべて異なり、すべてが重要です。公の役に立てることは素晴らしいことです。
