Since I work on a boat every day, my eating schedule is a little different from the average person. I usually have a smoothie for breakfast. The smoothie has a lot of different fruits and vegetables in it and is very filling. Because the ocean conditions are not always smooth I don’t want to have eaten a big breakfast before going on a possible bouncy boat. In the afternoon I rarely have a lunch. The most I may eat is a sandwich. Usually all I have is some peanuts or another very light snack. I have found that when it is even mildly rough I don’t really have much of an appetite. At home for dinner my wife and I often have something fairly light since we often eat fairly late. Typically it is soba or udon. We go out to eat maybe once a week and the majority of the time we go to a sushi restaurant. My favorite food is fish so that is when I get to splurge and have a bigger meal. Although I don’t eat a lot I do try to be careful in what I eat. I am very lucky in that I weigh exactly what I weighed in high school!

　私は、毎日、船に乗って仕事をしているので、食事の取りかたは普通の人と少し異なります。私の朝食は、大抵、スムージーだけです。スムージーには、色々な果物や野菜がたくさん入っており、飲んだ後は、お腹が一杯になります。海の状態は、必ずしも穏やかとは限りません。船が激しく揺れる場合もありますから、船に乗る前に、たっぷり朝食を食べることはありません。また、めったに昼食はとりません。昼食をとる場合には、サンドイッチを食べることが多いです。しかし、大抵、ピーナッツか、とても軽くスナックを食べます。私の場合、少しでも船が揺れたら、食欲がわかないことが分かりました。家では、私たち夫婦は、かなり遅く夕食をとるので、軽いものを食べます。いつもは、蕎麦または、うどんです。週に一度、外食します。私の一番好きな食べ物は魚ですから、だいたい寿司レストランに出かけます。ここでは、少し贅沢してお腹一杯食べます。私はあまり食べませんが、食べるものには注意しています。今の体重は高校生の時と同じです。幸運なことです。

Each week I take Bali to the wholesale fruit and vegetable markets in Chinatown. The farm fresh delights are the best prices in town. By the end of the day the cries ” only one dollar ” and “two for one” are an exciting time. Crowds flock, hungry for the big bargains . For but a few small coins Bali and I return with bags spilling over finely filled up for the week with glorious gifts and giveaways.

　私は、毎週、息子のバリを連れて、チャイナタウンの果物と野菜の問屋マーケットに行きます。農家から直送される新鮮な品物は、市内で一番安い、最高の価格です。５時が近づくと、「たった１ドルだよ」とか、「一個買ったら一個おまけだよ」と言う、親しみのある大声が聞こえて来ます。わくわくする楽しい時間です。大幅な値引きに貪欲な人たちが集まります。少しのお金で、投げ売り商品や格安商品を、一週間分、買い物バッグに詰め込み、 バッグからこぼれ落ちそうな状態で、息子と一緒に帰ります。

Collaborative Haiku Poem – 車庫の窓

shadow is gone
the morning sun streams in
garage windows

影去りて朝陽差し込む車庫の窓
かげさりて　あさひ さしこむ　しゃこ の まど

tree felling
hedge’s shadows vanish
windows shine

窓光る生垣と影さようなら

We cut down a big hedge that grew outside the eastern wall of our garage. It indeed was a rare opportunity to do so. Because of re-siding, we were told that the hedge had to be trimmed down. While the hedge was being trimmed, we realized that “NO HEDGE” was actually a good idea!  With the hedge gone,  the outside as well as inside the garage became brighter.  Plants, that were potted up and moved to the garage for winter, now enjoy the morning sunshine coming through windows which used to be covered by the hedge.

　家の外壁（サイデｲング siding)の張替え工事のついでに、車庫の東側の壁際に茂っていた生垣を取り払いました。この生垣は引っ越した時すでに幅５メートル高さ2メートル深さ1メートルとかなり大きく、年に１、２回剪定する以外は放置していたのですが、今回、除去するにはまたとない機会と伐採することにしました。伐採後、それまでは生垣に覆われていた車庫の窓からは朝陽が射し込み、霜を避け植床から鉢上げし車庫に移動した植物達を照らしています。

Since tomorrow, November 11th, is Veteran’s Day, and today is the birthday for the United States Marines, I went to see a famous statue yesterday. The statue is in Washington D.C.. It is in the national cemetery. The statue is in honor of all Marines. The statue shows four soldiers that are raising an American flag. The statue is very large and you can see the Capitol from there. Since the statue is surrounded by Arlington National Cemetery, at that place, it is very quiet and solemn.

　明日、１１月１１日は、退役軍人の日であり、今日、１１月１０日は、アメリカ海兵隊の創立記念日です。そこで昨日、有名な海兵隊戦争記念碑を見に行きました。記念碑は、ワシントンＤ.Ｃ.のアーリントン国立墓地の中にあります。これは、海兵隊のすべての兵士を讃えるために作られた銅像です。四人の兵士が星条旗を掲げています。この銅像は、非常に大きく、そこから国会議事堂を見ることができます。また、国立墓地に囲まれているため、非常に静かで、厳かです。

There are many beers to choose from these days. Each type has its own taste and purpose. There are four types of beer I gravitate towards. Beers from Japan, from the US West Coast, barrel aged and dark beers. Japanese beers tend to be lighter and are good for drinking on hot days or with meals. Westcoast beers are usually full of flavor and change often. Darker beers tend to be a bit stronger and filling. So with those you don’t need much food. Barrel aged beers however are a little different. They are finished in wine or alcohol barrels, tend to be a bit stronger, and come in many varieties. While I like all of these styles, recently the barrel aged beers are my favorite.

　最近では、色々な種類のビールを選べるようになりました。それぞれのビールには、独自の味と目的があります。私は、４種類のビールに惹かれます。日本のビールと米国西海岸のビール、そして、樽熟成ビールと黒ビールです。日本のビールは、軽い傾向があり、暑い日や食事と一緒に飲むのに適しています。西海岸のビールは、風味豊かで、しかも頻繁に新しい味が出ます。黒ビールは、少し強くて、お腹にたまるので、たくさん食べる必要がありません。樽熟成ビールは、少し異なります。このビールは、ワインまたはアルコール樽で仕上げられ、少し強くなる傾向があり、また、多くの種類があります。私は、これらすべての種類が好きですが、最近では、樽熟成ビールが、一番のお気に入りです。
