焼ける空ハワイの朝日穏やかに

In my boating job one of the regular tours is the sunset tour. Most of the different boat companies have a sunset tour. Of course the sunsets are very beautiful here but our sun rises are also very beautiful. Since it is our fall season now the sun rise is around 6:30 and I think that often the sun rise is even more beautiful than the sunset because of the way the whole horizon seems to be almost on fire! Since I am on the south side of the island I see the sun rising in the Diamond Head area and although I don’t see the actual sun coming up it is the way the sky is lit up that makes it so special for me. The reds and oranges and pinks are very beautiful and they seem to last longer than the sunset. Since the sunrise is later now more people can enjoy it. 

　私が担当するツアーで、定期的なものの一つに、サンセット・ツアーがあります。このツアーは、ほとんどの船会社が実施しています。ここの夕日は、本当に美しいですが、日の出も、大変美しいです。今は秋の季節ですから、日の出は、午前６時３０分頃です。この時期、日の出は夕日よりもさらに美しいと思います。と言うのは、地平線全体が、まるで焼けているかのように見えるからです。私は、オアフ島の南側にいますので、ダイヤモンドヘッド辺りに太陽が昇ります。太陽が昇るのを、直接、見ることはできませんが、私にとって、朝焼けの空は特別です。赤とオレンジとピンクの色は、非常に美しく、その光景は、夕日よりも長く続くようです。日の出が遅くなったため、より多くの人が、日の出を楽しむことができます。

flock of junco
returns to backyard

雪雲を追いかけジュンコ舞い戻り
ゆきぐも を　おいかけ　ジュンコ　まいもどり

to the snow country

雪の国ユキヒメドリの里帰り
ゆき の くに　ゆきみめどり の　さとがえり

Juncos are grey sparrows with white outer tail feathers.  Cool-weather birds.  For many regions, this is a “snow bird” visiting only in winter (“Birds of North America” by Kenn Kaufman). Their specialty is to scratch snow with their feet. As the decrease in bird population has been reported, it is reassuring to know that juncos have returned.

　ジュンコ（junco）はグレー色の雀と呼ばれています。茶色っぽいグレーから黒に近いグレーまで混在して群をなしています。低温地帯を好み、北米の住宅の庭には雪とともに姿を見せるところから、雪鳥、スノーバード、と呼ばれています。特徴は、足で雪を掻くこと、尻尾の羽の両端が白いことです。鳥の数の減少が伝えられているおりから、馴染みのジュンコの帰還に一安心しています。

I visited a museum called the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum near Washington DC and saw an exhibition on things related to space. The space shuttle named Discovery was the biggest item on display. There were also lots of rockets and satellites. I even saw a space suit. In one part of the museum, there was a moon rock that you could touc

　私は、ワシントンＤＣの近くにあるスミソニアン航空宇宙博物館へ行き、宇宙に関する展示を見ました。ディスカバリーという名前のスペースシャトルは、展示物の中で一番大きなものでした。ロケットや人工衛星もたくさんありました。宇宙服も見ました。博物館内のある所には、触ることのできる月の石がありました。

川眺め観覧車から都会見る
かわ ながめ　かんらんしゃ から　とかい みる

Since I moved to Virginia, I could see a large Ferris Wheel on the other side of the Potomac River in Maryland. It is a big wheel that you can see both day and night. I thought the view must be amazing. So, I decided to go for a ride. The wheel rotates very slowly but it takes you very high. One rotation takes about twenty minutes. At the top, you can see all the way to Washington D.C.. The wheel went around three times before it stopped and I had to get off. I enjoyed it a lot.

　バージニア州に引っ越してから、私は、ポトマック川を隔てて対岸にあるメリーランド州の大きな観覧車を見ることができます。昼も夜も見える大観覧車です。そこからの眺めは素晴らしいに違いないと思っていました。そこで、私は乗りに行くことにしました。観覧車は、非常にゆっくり回転しますが、とても高いところまで連れていってくれます。１回転するのに、２０分ぐらいかかります。最上部では、ワシントンＤ.Ｃ.まで、ずっと眺めることができます。観覧車は、３回まわった後、停止し、乗客は降ります。とても楽しかったです。
