About 7 years ago my car was stolen. While I was sad, I was also glad. Because I live in the city I didn’t really need a car. So instead of buying a new car I bought a cheap Chinese moped. I think it was one of the best purchases I ever made. Having a moped has saved me lots of money, time, and frustration. Going to work is easy. If there’s lots of traffic I can use the bike line and save time. Normally it takes about 20 minutes to get to work in the morning. Going home takes about 15 minutes. The best part is I never have to look for parking. However, there are 2 main drawbacks. 1) Mopeds are a little dangerous. They are small and cars often do not see me and come in to my line. On average I have 2-3 close calls per day. So now I always wear a helmet. 2) I am exposed to the elements. When it rains I get soaked and look like a wet dog. When it’s windy I get pushed around like a kite. When it’s sunny I get a strange tan. But despite all that. I love my little moped. I’ll be sad when it dies.

　７年くらい前、私は、車を盗まれました。残念だと思う半面、嬉しい気持ちもありました。私は町中に住んでいるので、車は必要ありません。ですから、私は新しい車を買う代わりに、価格の安い中国製のモペットを買いました。この買い物は、これまでの買い物の中で、もっとも賢い買い物の一つだったと思います。モペットを買ったことで、私は、たくさんのお金や時間を節約し、イライラを減らすことができました。仕事に行くのは簡単です。交通量が多い時、私は、時間節約の為、自転車レーンを使います。朝は、だいたい２０分ぐらいで職場に着きます。帰宅に要する時間は、だいたい１５分です。モペット通勤で一番良いことは、駐車場を探す必要がないことです。しかし、モペット通勤には、二つの大きな欠点があります。まず、モペットは、少し危険だと言うことです。モペットは小さいので、車は、私を見ないで、よく私の走っている車線に入ってきます。平均すると、１日に２、３回、ヒヤッとすることがあります。ですから、私は、いつも、ヘルメットを着用しています。二つ目は、風雨にさらされることです。雨が降ると私はびしょ濡れになります。風が強い時は、凧のように振り回されます。晴れた日には、変な日焼けができます。しかし、それでも、私は、小さなモペットが好きです。動かなくなれば、私はがっくりすると思います。

When you see someone you miss, everything is puppy dogs and rainbows. That feeling continues to grow but one day disappears. Changed forever, the memories will always be there.

　恋しい人に会った時、かわいい子犬や美しい虹に出会った時のような幸せな気持ちになります。そして、それは、どんどん大きくなります。しかし、ある日、そんな気持ちは姿を消します。消えたものは戻りません。しかし、思い出は、いつまでも消えることはありません。

mood rises and falls
never still

音楽や上がり下がり葉風で浮く
おんがく や　あがり さがり ば　かぜ で うく

I listen to different kinds of music. Of course, I hear music when shopping in stores, in the car when driving, and at home listening to the radio. I listen to popular music as well as classical. Listening to music lets me relax. I am not a very picky person, so if I had the chance, I would try playing any musical instrument. Someday, I might even play for Team NACOS.

　私は、色々な音楽を聞きます。お店で買い物をしている時、車を運転している時、自宅でラジオを聞いている時、勿論、私は、音楽を聞きます。クラシックだけでなく、ポピュラー音楽も聞きます。音楽を聞くとリラックスできます。私は、えり好みをする人間ではないので、機会があれば、楽器は、何でも試してみたいです。いつか、チーム ナコスで音楽を演奏したいと思います。

Christmas time

夜の空電気の花火クリスマス
よるのそら　でんきのはなび　クリスマス

In Honolulu, the day after Thanksgiving, the preparation for the Christmas lights and displays in the downtown area. Usually it takes a few days and the lights stay up until New Years day. On January 2nd the all get taken down. I think there are many beautiful displays all through the downtown area. Over the years it has gotten so popular that there are special City Lights bus tours that are held in the evening during the whole time the displays are up.

　ホノルルでは、感謝祭の次の日、ダウンタウンのクリスマス イルミネーションとデコレーションの準備が行われます。準備には、だいたい二日くらいかかり、イルミネーションは、元日まで点灯されます。そして、１月２日に、すべて取り外されます。ダウンタウンには、美しいイルミネーションやデコレーションがたくさんあると思います。年々、人気が出てきた為、この期間中、夜になると、特別なクリスマス ライト ツアーが行なわれます。

Hawaii is known as the Rainbow state since rainbows are so prevalent all year round but especially in the fall and winter. A typical fall or winter day it is normal for it to rain in the morning and evening which often results in beautiful rainbows. They occur so often that for those of us who live here it is a fairly normal occurrence. Even though it is sometimes an everyday occurrence to see rainbows, I never get tired of them.

　ハワイは、虹の州として知られています。虹は、一年中、かかりますが、秋と冬は、特に頻繁に見ることができます。典型的な秋の日や冬の日には、だいたい朝方と夕方に雨が降ります。そして、しばしば美しい虹がかかります。虹は、しょっちゅう、かかるので、ハワイに住む私たちにとっては、取り立てて珍しいことではありません。しかし、たとえ、ありふれたことであっても、決して飽きることはありません。

感謝祭七面鳥を焼き上げる
かんしゃさい　しちめんちょう を　やきあげる

This Thanksgiving I cooked a turkey by myself for the first time. When I bought the turkey it was frozen. The turkey weighed about 13 pounds. So, I had to thaw the turkey for about four days. Then, I had to pull the guts out of the middle. After that, I had to butter the turkey all over and add lots of salt and pepper. Also, I stuffed the inside of the turkey with onions and garlic. The turkey cooked in the oven for about four hours. I was worried the turkey might get dry and hard. However, when I cut it, the meat was very moist. In fact, the meat fell off of the bone.

　今年の感謝祭で、私は初めて、一人で七面鳥を焼きました。私は、重さ約６キロの冷凍の七面鳥を買いました。冷蔵庫の中で解凍するのに、４日ほどかかりました。私は、お腹から内臓を取り出し、七面鳥の表面に、満遍なくバターを塗り、塩とコショウをたくさん加えました。また、七面鳥のお腹の中に、玉ねぎとニンニクを詰め込みました。そして、オーブンで、４時間くらい焼きました。七面鳥が乾燥して、硬くなるのではないかと心配しました。しかし、切ってみると、肉は、とても柔らかく、水分がありました。実際、肉は、簡単に骨からはずれました。

冬猛暑古いエアコン千代の夏
ふゆ もうしょ　ふるい エアコン　ちよ の なつ

My office claims to have central air conditioning. However, I’m not too sure it works. The AC is very old. It looks like it is from the 60’s. There is a big brown metal box that hangs from the ceiling. It’s loud, clunky, and often needs repairs. The AC is constantly sucking air in from outside the building. So on humid days it feels like it makes the office hotter. On cold days it feels like nothing at all. In fact the building’s AC is so bad, several offices have installed window AC units. Oh and if you have to work on the weekend good luck. The building AC shuts off at 5PM every day and for the whole weekend.

　私の働くハワイ州政府の建物は、セントラル空調システムを採用しているそうです。しかし、うまくいっているかどうか、大いに疑問です。オフィスのエアコンは、非常に古く、１９６０年代に作られたもののようです。天井から大きな茶色の箱がぶらさがっています。それは、うるさくて不格好で、しばしば修理が必要です。エアコンは、いつも建物の外から空気を吸い込んでいます。その為、湿度の高い日には、オフィスの中は、蒸し暑く感じます。一方、寒い日には、何の効果もありません。実際、建物の空調が非常に悪いので、いくつかのオフィスには、窓用エアコンが取り付けられています。エアコンは、平日は、５時に止まります。週末は動きません。週末に仕事がある人は、お気の毒だけれど、頑張って、そんな気持ちです。
