In Hawaii, the busiest days of the year are the day before and after Christmas and of course Christmas. Unfortunately, during this time of the year the winds turn south or south west and then it is impossible for a boat to go out on the south side of the island. On Dec 24 the winds started to shift and a lot of customers canceled. Some were refunded their ticket price but the majority changed their reservation to another day. On Christmas day the winds were very strong coming out of the south so all the boat tours canceled. Even though the JTB tours canceled, the glass bottom boat staff went with the customers downtown and took pictures of the different sites. The customers were very happy about this and they understood why they were not able to go out on the boat.

　ハワイの一番忙しい日は、１２月２４日と２６日、そして、勿論、２５日、クリスマスの日です。残念なことに、この時期は貿易風が、南か南西の風になって、オアフ島の南側に船を出すのは不可能です。１２月２４日、風がはじめて南になり、キャンセルするお客様がたくさん出ました。一部の方には、チケット代金を払い戻しましたが、大半の方は、別の日に予約を変更されました。クリスマスの日は、南の風が凄く強くて、ツアーの船は、すべてキャンセルになりました。ＪＴＢのツーアは、中止されましたが、グラス ボトム ボート（船底がガラス底になった船）のスタッフとお客様は、ダウンタウンへ行き、色々な人気の場所で写真を撮りました。お客様は、非常に満足され、どうして船を出せないか、理解して下さったと思います。

I traveled to Iowa for Christmas. Instead of eating only American food, I decided to cook some fried rice and chicken karaage. First, I cut up broccoli, carrots and green onions. Then, I fried eggs and cut the eggs up too. Next, I mixed the eggs and vegetables together with rice. After that, I fried everything on the stove. For the chicken karaage, I first cut the chicken into small pieces. Then, I covered the chicken with a karaage mix. After that, I heated some oil and fried the chicken in the oil until it was brown. Finally, I was ready to eat. Thanks to a recommendation from a friend at the Japan America Society, I decided to try eating the chicken karaage with grated daikon. I think it was a success. After I finished eating, I packed up the remaining food in small plastic bags for future individual meals. The meals were put in the freezer to be frozen for later.

　クリスマスにアイオワへ行きました。アイオワでは、アメリカ料理だけでなく、焼き飯やから揚げを作ることにしました。焼き飯は、まず、ブロッコリー、ニンジン、ネギを切りました。卵も焼いてから切りました。そして、卵と野菜をご飯と一緒に混ぜました。その後、コンロで炒めました。鶏肉のから揚げは、まず鶏肉をぶつ切りにしました。それから、から揚げのトッピングを鶏肉の上にふりかけました。次に、油を温めた後、鶏肉をきつね色になるまで炒めました。やっと食べる準備が出来ました。日米協会の友人が勧めて下さったので、から揚げと大根おろしと一緒に食べて見ることにしました。おいしかったです。食べた後、残ったものは、これからの食事に使う為、小さなビニール袋に入れ、冷凍庫で保存することにしました。

白い星木の枝かぶるクリスマス

This week I took a picture of Christmas lights in Virginia. The lights were around a park. Since it was cold and dark, there were not many people around. The trees all had lights in the branches. The white lights almost looked like little white stars. Other than the sound of me taking a photo, it was pretty quiet.

　今週、私の住むバージニアのクリスマス イルミネーションの写真を撮りました。イルミネーションは、公園の周りにありました。寒くて暗かったので、人はあまりいませんでした。すべての木の枝に、ライトが付けてありました。白いライトは、小さな白い星のようでした。写真を撮る音以外は、非常に静かでした。

On a warm winter day, we stopped in a coffee shop. In a short distance away, a densely wooded hill can be seen from the parking lot of the coffee shop. Could that be the Bohemian Cemetery we have seen on a map of Omaha?  Encouraged by a notice on a board “Visitors welcomed”, we slowly proceeded meandering roads among grave stones that stand in an orderly fashion on hilly slope.  The top of hill is flat and wide, in the center of which there is a cenotaph commemorating soldiers of Bohemian heritage lost in World War II.  The cemetery is well taken care of.  When returned to the entrance, we realized the cemetery stands across the main street from a big supermarket we frequent. To be honest, until that day, I didn’t notice the presence of the cemetery nearby. The Bohemian Cemetery was created in 1883 by immigrants from Bohemia, now the Czeck Republic.

　12月には珍しい暖かいある日、立ち寄った喫茶店の駐車場の裏手の丘は鬱蒼と茂った森。これはひょっとすると地図で見たことのあるボヘミアンセメタリーでは？と、実地検査をしてみました。鉄の門の傍の「一般歓迎」の立て札に励まされて中に入ると、丘の斜面を利用して墓石群が整然と並んでいます。丘の頂上は平らにならされていて、中央に第二次大戦で戦死したボヘミアン系兵士の慰霊塔が立っていました。よく整備されたセメタリーを一巡して入り口に戻ると、大通りを挟んだ向かいはよく来るスーパーマーケットで、正直、これまでセメタリーがすぐそばにあるとは全く気が付きませんでした。ボヘミアンセメタリーは1883年（現）チェコ共和国からの移民により創設され、現在に至っています。

焼ける空ゆっくり溶けて日が終わる
やける そら　ゆっくり とけて　ひ が おわる

I am very fortunate in my job that I get to see beautiful sunsets almost every night. Even if it is cloudy and there is not much of a sunset, the sky after the sunset is almost always a beautiful reddish orange color and sometimes a nice pink color. My customers are often more impressed with the sky after the sun sets than the actual sunset!

　私は、仕事のお陰で、ほぼ毎日、夕日の沈む、美しい光景を見ることができます。曇っていて、夕日が、十分、見えなくても、日没後の空は、ほとんどいつも、美しい赤みがかったオレンジ色です。時には、素敵なピンク色です。多くの場合、お客様は、実際の日没よりも、太陽が沈んだ後の空に感銘を受けます。
