In my apartment, my wife and I are not allowed to have pets. We have always had one or two cats and also had dogs for about 9 years, so not being able to have pets has been very hard. The apartment above us has one dog and two cats and for a long time we have been talking about at least getting a cat. Near our apartment there is a pet store that works with the Humane Society and they recently had lots of kittens so they were giving them away for free! All we had to do was pay for the initial shots which cost about $70.00. We have a great kitten that we call Kareen, after the Japanese fruit, who follows me around like a little puppy and all she wants to do is play! So we have a new addition to our family! If our landlord finds out I will just say we have problems with mice!

　私の借りているアパートの部屋では、ペットを飼うことができません。私達夫婦は、常に、一匹か二匹の猫、また、ここ９年くらいは、二匹の犬も飼ってきました。ですから、ペット禁止の規則は、大変、つらいことでした。アパートの上の住人は、犬一匹と猫二匹を飼っています。ですから、私達も、少なくとも、猫が欲しいと話していました。私達のアパートの近くに、ヒューメイン・ソサイエティと連携するペットショップがあります。そして、最近、たくさんの子猫がおり、無料でプレゼントしていました。子猫を譲り受ける人がしなければならないことは、７０ドルほどの最初の注射代金を支払うだけでした。凄く良い猫を手に入れました。名前は、日本の果物にちなんで、「かりん」と名付けました。ずっと私に付いて来て、遊びたがります。子犬のようです。新しい家族になりました。もし、大家さんに見つかったら、アパートにネズミがいると言います。

fall leaves
vacuum truck arrives
winter clean

秋土産冬のトラック落ち葉吸う
あき みやげ　ふゆ の トラック　おちば すう

I went home for Christmas and saw a special kind of truck. This truck sucks up fallen leaves. Since so many leaves fall from the trees in the fall and winter, it is difficult to rake them all. Instead, this truck can come to the house and vacuum the leaves for you. The truck is fast and convenient. In fact, the leaves are gone so quickly it is unbelievable.

　クリスマスに家に帰った時、私は、特殊なトラックを見ました。このトラックは、落ち葉を吸い込むことができます。秋と冬には、大量の落ち葉がでます。そして、その全てを、手で、かき集めるのは大変です。代わりに、トラックが来て、全て集めてくれます。トラックは、高速で便利です。実際、落ち葉はすぐに消えてしまい、信じられないほどです。

Christmas Day is a holiday in the United States. So, it is normal to see Christmas things in government buildings during the holiday time. In the lobby of the U.S. Patent Office, I saw a Christmas tree rising high toward the ceiling. Above the tree, was an American flag that was hanging down toward the tree. It almost looked like the two would touch. I thought it was a nice image during the holidays.

　クリスマスの日は、米国の祝日です。ですから、クリスマスの時期に政府の建物で、クリスマスに関係するものを見るのは、珍しいことではありません。米国特許商標庁のロビーでは、天井に向かって高く伸びる大きなクリスマスツリーを見ました。クリスマスツリーの上には、天井からアメリカ国旗が垂れ下がっていました。ツリーと国旗は、ほとんど接するかのように見えました。クリスマス時期にふさわしい、素晴らしい光景だと思いました。

fresh wreath
green of kadomatsu
New Year celebration

門松の緑求めてリース買い
かどまつ の　みどり もとめて　リースかい

accept gladly
long lasting happiness

Until 4 or 5 years ago, most Christmas wreaths sold in stores were made of dead branches  decorated with winter leaves and fruits.  Lately,  wreaths made of fresh green branches are available, even though they are not matsu, but fir. Nonetheless it is green.  A stone lantern in our garden is decorated with the green wreath to celebrate new year. My niece in Hawaii says that you can buy Kadomatsu in Hawaii. It may be available in big cities on the East and West Coasts.
Kadomatsu means the New Year decoration consisting of pine tree and/or bamboos in a big tub that is placed by the gate (kado is the gate in Japanese and matsu the pine tree). Nowadays, people living in highrises or apartment buildings decorate their doors with a wreath using pine branches.

　4、5年前までは店頭に見るクリスマスリースは枯れ枝に冬の木の葉や果物を差したものが主流でしたが、近年では新鮮な緑の枝でつくったリースを購入できるようになりました。緑の枝は松ならぬもみの木の枝ですが緑であることに違いはありません。新年のお祝いにと庭の石灯篭に門松がわりにこのリースを飾っています。ハワイに住む姪からのメールによるとハワイでは門松が手に入るとのこと。東西海岸沿いの都市（ニューヨークやロスアンゼルス）でも売っているかもしれません。日本では門口のない集合住宅に住む人たちは松でつくったリースなどを玄関の戸にかけるとのこと。お正月らしくて良いですね。
