a young man
lost in flowers and chocolate
Valentine’s day

花束とチョコ箱に埋まる青年かな
はなたば と　チョコばこ に うまる　せいねん かな

countless
flowers and chocolate gifts
confession of love

(Michiko version)
山ほどの愛の告白チョコと花
やまほど の　あい の こくはく　チョコ と はな

On Valentine’s Day, my husband told, with a broad smile, what he witnessed at the supermarket, ”A young man, who was piling up flowers and boxes of chocolate in his arms, was still not sure  whether or not he had enough of these, asked  an older man, another customer standing nearby if he had purchased enough. The older man, glad to be asked for his sage advice, said to the young man “Get more.”

　バレンタインデーの買い物にスーパーに立ち寄った夫の話「今日はいつもとは違って男性客がたくさんいた。ある青年は花束とチョコレートの箱を腕にいっぱい抱えながらも、数が充分かどうか自信がないのか、そばにいた初老の男性に助言を求めた。人生の先輩たる老人の助言は『もっと買いなさい』。

Collaborative Haiku Poem – ヒヤシンス

hyacinth
fills air with fragrance
waiting for spring

ヒヤシンス芳香放ち春を待つ
ひやしんす　ほうこう はなち　はる を まつ

aromatic scent
spreads in a cloudy sky
hyacinth fascination

ヒヤシンスどんより雲に香り立つ
ひやしんす　どんよりぐも に　かおり たつ

The sky is overcast these winter days, making the garden corner in stores a very attractive place, indeed. Nearing the garden corner, you notice that the air is filled with the fragrance of hyacinth. You usually end up purchasing one, most often two, pots of hyacinth. You feel that the coming of spring is not far off.

　ここ数日、どんより曇った冬の天気が続いています。買い物にお店に立ち寄ると、つい、園芸コーナーに足が向きます。近寄ると漂い来るはヒヤシンスの芳香。すると、１鉢、時には、２鉢買い求める羽目になります。ヒヤシンスの芳香を楽しんでいると、春の到来もさほど遠からずと感じます。

Hawaiian skies
clouds chased by rainbows
drenched in green

雨ばかり緑のキャンパス虹が咲く
あめ ばかり　みどり の キャンパス　にじ が さく

In Hawaii there is no actual rainy season that other countries have but the months of January, February and sometimes even into March can have bad weather for sometimes a few weeks at a time. Usually the winds get very strong and there are usually cloudy rainy days that never seem to end. If the winds come out of the South or West then that means the South side of the island has no kind of water sports at all since it is so rough. I always feel sorry for the tourists when this happens but there are many benefits to this weather. Everything turns a beautiful green color, and there are lots of beautiful rainbows. The rain is of course very important to the farmers and with all of the rain the water here is wonderful. There is almost always an abundance of wonderful tasting fresh water.

　ハワイには、他の国にあるような雨季はありません。しかし、１月や２月、時には、３月になっても、何週間も悪天候が続くことがあります。大抵、風が非常に強くなり、いつまでも終わりそうにない、悪天候が続きます。風が南または西から吹いて来る時、オアフ島の南の海は、大変荒れるので、ウォータースポーツはできません。波が大きいので、ツアーも中止になります。こんな時、私は、いつも、観光客を気の毒に思います。しかし、こんな天気にも、良い点があります。すべての植物は、美しい緑色に変わり、美しい虹がたくさんでます。勿論、雨は、農家にとって非常に大切であり、雨のおかげで、ハワイの水はとても美味しいです。ハワイには、いつも美味しい水が豊富にあります。

Diamond Head’s face
guarding the ocean

Diamond Head is one of the most recognizable spots in Oahu and also in the state of Hawaii. It is one of the most popular spots for tourists and locals alike as it is very easy to climb, a slow round trip takes about 1.5 hours and there are stairs that go all the way to the top. I am very fortunate in that I get a completely different view of Diamond Head from the boat as compared to the usual views taken from the beach. The usual pictures of Diamond Head are taken from the side but I sometimes can look at it directly from the front which is a spectacular view!

　ダイヤモンドヘッドは、オアフ島で、そしてまた、ハワイ州で、非常に有名なスポットです。ダイヤモンドヘッドは、頂上まで階段があり、ゆっくり登っても、往復１時間半くらいです。観光客にも地元の人にも、気軽に登れる山として、大変人気があります。幸い、私は、船の仕事をしているので、浜辺から見るダイヤモンドヘッドとは、まったく違った景色を、船上から見ることができます。だいたい、ダイヤモンドヘッドの写真は、横からのものが多いのですが、私は、真正面から見ることができます。正面から見るダイヤモンドヘッドは、見事な眺めです。
