In order to minimize the transmission of coronavirus between humans, schools and most businesses, excluding supermarkets, have been closed in Nebraska since mid-February.  It is said that food service industries such as restaurants and travel and sightseeing industries are particularly hard hit. I have started collecting important current words related to coronavirus infection that are heard and seen daily : Covid-19, pandemic, community spread, shelter-in place (or stay-at home), self-quarantine, school and business closure, social distancing, economic impact.

　コロナウイルスの伝染をくい止めるには人と人の接触を最小にする必要ありとの見地から、２月中旬以来、ネブラスカ州でも各種学校、スーパーマーケット以外のほとんどの事業が閉鎖されています。レストラン等の食事業、旅行業、観光地の打撃が憂慮されます。
ウイルス危機発生以来、テレビ、新聞紙上に頻回見かける時事言葉を集めてみました。

Covid-19（新型コロナウイルス感染症）,  pandemic （感染爆発）,   community spread （地域伝染）  shelter-in place （屋内退避）,  self-quarantine （自己隔離、自宅にひきこもること）,  school and business closure （学校閉鎖、休業）、 social  distancing （感染拡大を防ぐために物理的な距離をとること）,   economic impact （経済的影響）。

the Kitten is gone

かりんちゃん猫の歩みは女王様
かりん ちゃん　ねこ の あゆみ は　じょうおう さま

I have written two haiku poems about my kitten Karin. She is probably about 7 months old now and not only has she gotten very big, she is also starting to act more like an adult cat instead of a kitten. She doesn’t run around nearly as much as she did and she seems to enjoy just sleeping on my lap or next to me for often an hour or more. When she was a kitten she couldn’t stay still. I am the one who usually feeds her so she tends to be extra nice to me! I am looking forward to when she is full grown!

　私は、子猫のかりんちゃんについて、俳句を二つ書きました。かりんちゃんは、おそらく、生後７か月ぐらいで、非常に大きくなっただけでなく、大人の猫のような振る舞いを始めています。以前のように走り回ることはなく、私の膝の上や隣りで、一時間以上、寝るのが好きみたいです。かりんちゃんが、子猫の頃、いつも、あちこち走り回っていました。私は、いつもかりんちゃんに餌をやるので、私に特別になついているようです。かりんちゃんが、大きくなるのを楽しみにしています。

giant planes arrive

Waikiki ghost town

三万の乗客は減り今はゼロ
さんまん の　じょうきゃく は へり　いま は ゼロ

On a normal day there are 30,000 passenger arrivals in Honolulu. Majority of those people head to Waikiki. Waikiki is a bustling city with perfect weather and world famous beaches. There are many hotels and restaurants, stores and street venders, surf shops and activities to enjoy. At any given time there are thousands of people on the street or enjoying Waikiki’s beaches.

However Waikiki has become a ghost town. To stop the spread of the corona virus stores and restaurants shut down. Hotels are shuttering and the Parks and beaches in Waikiki are closed. Recently the Hawaii’s Governor placed a mandatory 14 day quarantine for anyone arriving in Hawaii. On the first day of the quarantine there were only  250 non-resident arrivals to Honolulu and 1,500 arrivals total.  

Seeing Waikiki empty at noon was a surreal experience. Hawaii’s tourism industry and economy is effectively dead.

　毎日、３万人の人がホノルルにやって来ます。そのうち大半の人は、ワイキキに向かいます。ワイキキは、過ごしやすい天気と世界的に有名なビーチのある賑やかな町です。いろいろなホテルやレストラン、また、商店や露店、そして、サーフショップや楽しいイベントがあります。いつでも、何千人もの人が、ワイキキを歩いたり、ビーチで楽しんでいます。
　
　しかし、今、ワイキキは、ゴーストタウンになっています。新型コロナウイルスの拡散を防ぐ為、商店やレストランは休業し、ホテルは閉まり、公園やビーチも閉鎖されています。最近、ハワイ州知事は、ハワイに来た人は、全員、１４日間、隔離することを命じました。隔離の初日、訪問客の数は、わずか２５０人で、ローカルの人の人数を合わせて、ホノルル空港に到着した人の数は、１５００人でした。
　
　真昼に、誰もいないワイキキを見るのはシュールな経験です。ハワイの観光産業と経済は、事実上動かなくなりました。

On Thursday, March 26 2020, anybody visiting Hawaii or any returning Hawaiian resident must undergo a 14 day quarantine. This is to prevent the spread of the Corona Virus which unfortunately is in the islands. The only stricter measure the Governor could take would be to have all incoming and outgoing flights canceled. This sounds like the best way but only the President can decide to do that. Although the new rule does not take into effect until the 26th of March, it is already obviously working as I write this on the 25th. All State parks are already closed as are Bars, night clubs and many restaurants. In the last few days some very big hotels have also closed. The stores that are open have cut back on their hours. This rule is in effect until the end of April. Hopefully after that the worst will be over and we can slowly get back to normal again.

　２０２０年３月２６日木曜日に、ハワイにやって来た人、また、ハワイに戻って来た人は、全員、二週間、隔離されます。残念なことに、コロナウイルスは、ハワイに存在し、このウイルスを広げない為です。知事がとることができる最も厳しい措置は、すべての発着便をキャンセルすることです。これは最良の方法のようですが、大統領だけが、これを決定することができます。新しい規則は、３月２６日まで有効になりません。しかし、この記事を２５日に書いているのですが、すでに明らかに機能しています。バー、ナイトクラブ、多くのレストランと同様、すべての州立公園は、すでに閉鎖されています。ここ数日で、いくつかの非常に大きなホテルも閉鎖されました。開店している店は、営業時間を減らしました。この規則は４月末まで有効です。その頃には、最悪の事態が終わり、徐々に、普通の生活が戻って来ることを願います。

rain drops
winter air creeps
cold hardens

雨降って忍び込む冬寒くなる
あめ ふって　しのびこむ ふゆ　さむく なる

Winter in Virginia has been mild. Although snow has fallen it has mostly been light. Instead of snowing, it usually rains. Interestingly, when it rains, the temperature seems to get a little warmer. The air temperature has been at or below zero degrees Celsius sometimes at night. However, during the day, it has been as high as 20 degrees and often stays near 10 degrees. The only bad part about Virginia weather so far is when it is cold and wet. That combination feels particularly uncomfortable.

　最近まで、バージニアの冬は穏やかでした。雪は降りましたが、ほんの少しで、その代わり、雨の日が多かったです。興味深いことは、雨が降ると、気温が上がり、少し暖かくなるようです。夜は、時々、０度以下になりました。そして、昼は、２０度くらいになることもありましたが、だいたい１０度くらいでした。これまでのバージニアの天気で、寒い日と雨の日が最悪です。雨と寒さが重なる日は、特に不快です。
