Hawaii was one of the last states to be hit by the corona virus. Now that it is officially here the State is moving fast to stop the spread of the virus. Fist the schools canceled events. Then spring break was extended by one week. Shopping malls and stores reduced their hours. Movie theaters and tourist attractions are closed. Now, gym, restaurants, and bars are closing. Yesterday, the Governor ordered all non-essential state employees stay home for 15 days. I was hoping I would be non-essential and get 15 days off with pay. But sadly, I am not. So while some of my friends are at home enjoying Netflixs, I will be at work. Lucky me….

　ハワイ州は、コロナウイルスに襲われた最後の州の一つでした。今、州政府は、ウイルスの拡散を止める為、素早く動いています。まず、学校で行われる行事を中止しました。そして、春休みを、一週間延長しました。ショッピングモールや商店は、営業時間を短縮しました。映画館と観光スポットは、閉鎖されています。現在、ジムやレストラン、そして、バーは閉店しています。昨日、州知事は、要職以外の州政府職員は、全員、１５日間、家で待機することを命じました。私の担当する仕事は、必要不可欠のものではなく、１５日間の有給休暇が取れると期待していました。しかし、悲しいことに、私は、そうではありませんでした。私が仕事をしている間、私の同僚たちは、家でネットフリックスを楽しんでいます。私は、なんて幸運なんでしょうね！

空席やウイルスのせいで客が減り
くうせき や　ウイルス の せい で　きゃく が へり

Probably the biggest facing the world at this moment is the Corona virus. Since I work on the submarine and the glass bottom boat I deal with customers from all over the world. Because of this new virus there has been a huge reduction in customers. Last year at this time it was typical to have one 64 passenger submarine and one 48 passenger submarine all day. Now it is just the one 64 passenger submarine and that is usually only half filled. The glass bottom boat has also been affected. Many days tours will be combined since the number of passengers is so low. Unfortunately at this time the virus is just beginning to make its mark in Hawaii and it will be some months before things return to the pre virus time.

　今、世界が直面している一番の問題は、おそらく、コロナウイルスでしょう。私は、潜水艦とグラスボトムボートで働いているので、毎日、世界中からいらっしゃるお客様と一緒にいます。新しいウイルスのせいで、お客様は、随分減りました。去年の今頃は、定員６４人と定員４８人の潜水艦を一日中使いました。しかし、現在は、定員６４の潜水艦一隻だけで、しかも、たいてい半分くらいの席は空いています。グラスボトムボートも影響を受けています。乗客数が非常に少ない為、いくつかのツアーをひとまとめにして実施する日が多くなっています。残念なことに、ウイルスの問題は、ハワイでは、注目を集め始めたばかりです。問題が発生する以前の状態に戻るまでに、何ヶ月かは、かかると思います。

店にいる遠くまで見る空の棚
みせ に いる　とおく まで みる　から の たな

I went to the grocery store on Saturday. I was surprised to see that a lot of things were gone. Employees told me that all the chicken was sold by noon. I saw that most of the bread and all of the paper towels were gone. Also, the bottled water was all sold out. It looked like a scene from a disaster. However, everything was fine, and people were friendly. The problem was the coronavirus. People were worried and were buying a lot of items to be ready. When a lot of people buy things all at once, this can happen. One thing that was interesting was what people did not buy. For example, there was still plenty of soda, juice, eggs and milk. I hope that everyone was able to buy what they needed. I also hope that no items will go to waste. I wonder how long the stores will look so empty.

　土曜日に食料品店に行きました。たくさんのものがなくなっていたので驚きました。店員さんが、鶏肉は、昼までに、すべて売り切れたと言いました。パンは、ほとんど、ペーパータオルは、すべて、なくなっていました。また、ペットボトルの水も、売り切れていました。災害のシーンを見ているようでした。しかし、特に問題はなく、みなさん、親切でした。問題は、コロナウイルスでした。みんなが、心配して、準備の為に、たくさんの商品を買っていました。たくさんの人が一度に物を買う時、このようなことが起こり得ます。興味深いのは、人が購入しなかった物です。たとえば、ソーダ、ジュース、卵、牛乳は、まだ、たくさんありました。誰もが必要なものを買えることを願っています。また、買ったものが無駄にならないことを期待しています。店が空っぽの状態は、いつまで続くのでしょうか！

Collaborative Haiku Poem – 渡り鳥

migrating ducks
carry in the wings
the south wind

渡りがも翼に運ぶ南風
わたりがも　つばさ に はこぶ　みなみかぜ

flock and flap
continue to the horizon

群れを成し羽ばたく鳥や超特急
むれ を なし　はばたく とり や　ちょうとっきゅう

Migrating birds seen in this area are ducks and geese. Both of these birds fly forming a letter v. Some groups stretch so long that the end is beyond the horizon, and others seem to cover the entire sky.  How to differentiate ducks from geese? Look at their tails. Geese fly with their legs stretching straight under the tails. Ducks’ legs are tucked up underneath the body.

Lately, we all are feeling stressed because of the novel coronavirus.  It is nice to watch migrating birds flying as if everything is going as usual.

このあたりで見かける渡り鳥といえば野鴨（のがも）あるいは鵞鳥（がちょう）。初春、どちらもくの字に隊列を組んで南からやって来ます。隊列は時には地平線の彼方に伸びるほど長く、時には沢山の鳥が空を覆うばかり。クワークワーと鳴きながら飛ぶ様はまさに見ものです。野鴨と鵞鳥の見分け方は尻尾の先。鵞鳥は脚をまっすぐ尻尾の先に伸ばして飛びます。野鴨の脚は身体の下に隠れていて外に出ていません。

コロナウイルス厄災で何かと騒がしい今日この頃。それとは全く無関係とばかりに飛ぶ渡り鳥を見かけると心がなごむ思いがします。

ウイルス危機思い起こすは上喜撰（蒸気船）
ウイルス きき　おもい おこす は　じょうきせん （じょうきせん）

“Taihei no nemuri wo samasu jokisen tatta yonhai de yorumo numurezu”
Literal translation: People are awakened from a peaceful dream and unable to sleep at night after drinking just four cups of Jokisen (上喜撰).  Jokisen is the higher grade of kisen, a green tea. jokisen also denotes steam boats (蒸気船).  Therefore, the poem means that people were shocked by the arrival of four steam boats in 1853.

　「泰平の眠りを覚ます上喜撰（蒸気船）　たった四はいで夜もねむれず」
この狂歌は、1853年（嘉永6年）、ペリー総督が４隻の黒船を率いて浦賀沖に来航した時の衝撃を、当時の銘茶（喜撰の上等品）と蒸気船を重ね合わせて歌ったものです。

These few days, TV’s news programs have been filled with reports of the novel coronavirus, COVID-19.  As patients and deaths increase not only in China but also other countries including Iran and Italy, the infection appears to become a pandemic.
This news made me think of a kyoka (comic poem) composed in 1853 when Matthew Perry, Commander of the U. S. East India Fleet, arrived Japan in four steam war ships (popularly known in Japan as KUROFUNE, the black ships).  Although the arrival caused panic in Japan, the writer of the kyoka never lost his objective view point, and the poem has a calming effect on people who may get panicky thinking about the coronavirus infection.

　ここ数日、テレビのニュース番組はnovel coronavirus（新型コロナウイルス）の報道で持ちきりです。このウイルスによる新型肺炎死者が発生源の中国だけでなくイラン、イタリア等の他国に拡がり、パンデミック（pandemic) の様相を呈しだした事実に誰もが深刻にならざるをえません。その最中、私の脳裏に浮かんだのは上喜撰の狂歌です。ペリー艦隊来航は日本のいたるところで一種のパニック状況を引き起こしたといわれていますが、この狂歌の作者の客観的な視点を失うことなく現状を見る態度は、現在進行中のコロナウイルス事件にともするとパニックに陥りかねない気持ちを落ち着かせる効果があります。

冬の海イルカに寄り添う鯨かな

The month of February is the peak for whale watching season in Oahu. All the whale watching boats tend to come in much closer to shore as the Mother and her calf are often found in the shallower waters. This season has been very good for seeing whales from the glass bottom boat. When looking for whales it is often possible to have dolphins in the same area. Just recently there was a pod of dolphins that followed the glass bottom boat for about 30 minutes and I was able to get some nice pictures.

　２月は、オアフ島のホエール ウォッチング シーズンのピークです。ホエール ウォッチングの船は、すべて、海岸近くに集まる傾向があります。と言うのは、母鯨と赤ちゃん鯨は、浅瀬にいることが多いからです。今シーズンは、私たちのグラス ボトム ボートから、ツアーを十二分に楽しむことができました。鯨を探す時、同じところにイルカがいることが多いです。つい先日も、イルカの群れが、３０分くらい、私たちの船に付いてきました。素敵な写真を撮ることができました。

ヤクルトやこけしのボトル長寿命

Today, I bought Yakuruto for the first time. I found it at a nearby store. I heard that Yakuruto is good for health. Yakuruto has bacteria that help with digestion. However, there was one thing that surprised me. There are two types of Yakuruto. One type is a blue color and the other type is a red color. The blue color one has fewer calories. Since I wanted to try both kinds, I bought one package of each. Each package has at least six small bottles. Supposedly, the different kinds taste the same and are equally effective. I only tried free samples of Yakuruto once or twice at the store. So far, I think I am happy with the purchase.

　今日、初めてヤクルトを買いました。近くの店で見つけました。ヤクルトには、消化を助ける細菌が含まれていて、健康に良いと聞きました。しかし、少し意外に思ったことがありました。ヤクルトには、２種類のタイプがあることです。一つは、青で、もう一つは、赤です。青は、赤に比べてカロリーが少ないです。私は、両方、試してみたかったので、それぞれのパッケージを一つずつ購入しました。各パッケージには、六つの小さなボトルが入っています。どちらも味や効果は同じだそうです。お店で、１、２度、無料サンプルを飲んでみました。今のところ、この買い物に満足しています。
