Because of the Covid rules, the Glass Bottom Boat is only able to take a little over half of the maximum number of customers. This means that only 25 people can be on the boat. One nice result of this rule is that since the groups are smaller the tour tends to be a little more relaxed and I have more time to look for dolphins and whales. I have been very lucky in that lately there have been a lot of spinner dolphin sightings and many times the dolphins jump into the air to the delight of all the customers.

　新型コロナウイルスの規則により、グラスボトムボートに乗って頂くお客様の数は、いつもの半分ちょっとです。ですから、乗れるのは２５人位です。この規則のお陰で良いこともあります。人数が少ない為、お客様はゆったりしたツアーを楽しめます。一方、私たちは、イルカやクジラを探す時間が増えます。最近、ハシナガイルカがたくさん目撃され、イルカが宙に舞って飛び込み、お客様を喜ばせています。

Collaborative Haiku Poem – 新型コロナワクチン接種

seniors
gather in a big hall
wait for vaccine shots

一堂に会してシニア注射待つ
いちどうに かいして　シニア　ちゅうしゃ まつ

I received a first dose of coronavirus vaccine in late February. The order of vaccination is determined by phases, i.e. 1A phase for long-term care residents and first responders. 1B for citizens 65 years and older, 2A for 50 to 64 years old and 2B for 16 to 49 years old.  Other factors are left to each state. When I got to the designated site, a big hall was already filled with a lot of masked people sitting in chairs and waiting for the shots. I was impressed that very few people were with cell phones, unlike a popular scene we are accustomed to nowadays. Those seniors seemed to be in good health and waited their turns patiently and quietly. Come to think of it, it does not occur often that people of certain ages get together in one place. When younger generations ,or so called millennials, come to the site in March, the scene may be quite different from that of seniors.

　2月下旬、新型コロナウイルスのワクチン注射を受けました。ワクチン注射を受ける順番は段階（phase）によって分けられており、ケヤーセンター居住者ならびに救急員（first respondeers)は1A段階,６５歳以上の市民（シニア）は1B、５０歳～６４歳は2A, １６歳～４９歳は2Bとなっていて、場所その他の具体的な方法は各州に任されています。指定の場所に行くと、既にマスク着用の沢山の人が広いホールの椅子につき注射の順番を待っています。もっとも印象的だったのは、今やお馴染みの風景となったセルフォーンを見つめている人が非常に少ないことでした。健康状態も概して良好で、慌てず騒がすの態度と察せられました。考えてみると、一定の世代が一ヶ所に集まるといった機会はそう頻繁になく、3月の若い世代（いわゆるミレニアム世代、２B段階）の番ではシニアとは違った風景が見られるのはないでしょうか (参照：下の想像画）。

Collaborative Haiku Poem – 厳冬の鳥

frigid temperature
birds not beaten easily
gather at feeders

厳冬にめげず小鳥は餌箱に
げんとう に　めげず ことり は　えさばこ に

These few days, temperature remains low. This morning (February 16), it was down to minus 22 degree Fahrenheit (about minus 30 degree Celsius). In spire of firigid temperature, birds, usually heard but not seen, such as chickadees and nuthatches, show up at feeders, in addition to regulars, juncos and sparrows. Scarlet cardinals and winter-coated goldfinches also join. The feeding area is full of activity. Once in a while, the arrogant Bluejay suddenly comes down to feeders. Other birds are taken by surprise. A small melee ensues. I make sure there is enough food so that these brave birds survive the winter.

　この数日低温がつづき、今朝（2月16日）は華氏ー２２度（摂氏ー３０度あたり）まで下降。寒さにも関わらず、餌箱には常連のユキヒメドリや雀に加えて、チカデｲーやナットハッチといった、普段、声は聞こえても見かけない鳥がやって来ます。真っ赤なカーデｲナル、冬姿のゴールドフィンチ等も仲間入りし餌場は大賑わい。時には、いつもお高くとまっている（文字通り）ブルージェイが、突如、飛び降りてきて他の小鳥たちを驚かし、餌箱の周辺がひと騒動。厳冬を生き抜いている鳥たちのために餌を切らさないようにしています。
