日が昇る窓を開ければ鳥の声
ひ が のぼる　まど を あければ　とり の こえ

For 6 years, when I looked outside I was surrounded by tall buildings and concrete. The sky was nothing but a sliver. When I went to sleep and when I woke up I was greeted by buses and tourists. Waikiki was very tiring. Now, since moving, when I look outside I am greeted by a wide open space. The closest highrise is over 100 meters away. Additionally, I can see a large park, football field, and canal from the lanai.  When I sleep I am greeted by silence. The mornings greet me with a nice sunrise and roosters and birds chirping. When I wake up I am completely refreshed.

　６年間、アパートから外を見ると、高層ビルやコンクリートに囲まれていました。空はほんの少し見えるだけでした。朝、目を覚ますと、バスや観光客のさわがしい音が挨拶してくれました。ワイキキは、とても疲れました。ワイキキから引っ越して、今、窓の外を見ると、広々とした空間が、私に挨拶してくれます。最も近い高層ビルは、１００メートル以上離れています。また、ベランダからは、広い公園、サッカー場、運河が見えます。私が眠る時、静けさが迎えてくれます。朝は、素敵な日の出と共に、にわとりの鳴き声や小鳥のさえずりが挨拶してくれます。目を覚ました時、私は、完全に元気を取り戻しています。

Collaborative Haiku Poem – サハラダストストーム

hazy sky
Saharan dust storm
across the ocean

かすみ空サハラの砂塵海を超え
かすみぞら　サハラ の さじん　うみ を こえ

At the end of June, the word “Sahara dust” was mentioned on TV for the first time. The “Sahara” refers to the Sahara Desert in Africa, the dust storm that begins there and moves to the north-west is the Saharan dust storm. The 2020 dust storm is so large that it is seen clearly on satellite image, the largest in 60 years. The dust covered the Caribbean Islands and reached North America for the first time. Eastern Nebraska is in the western edge of the dust storm. The hazy sky lasted for one day. A similar phenomenon occurs in East Asia called the “Asian dust storm”, or “yellow sand” in Japanese, which starts in the Central Asian desert and covers large areas of Eastern Asia.

　６月の末、「サハラダスト」との言葉を初めて耳にしました。サハラはご存知のアフリカのサハラ砂漠のことで、強風が砂漠表面のダストを西北方向に運ぶ現象をサハラダストストームと呼ぶのですが、2020年はサテライトでも確認されるほどの60年ぶりの大規模で、カリブ海諸島の町は霧に閉じ込められたと同じ状況になりました。今回、初めて北米にまで達し、ネブラスカ州では東半分がダストに覆われました。日本で呼ぶ黄砂も同じ気象現象で中央アジアの砂漠からの砂塵が東アジアを広範囲に覆います。

pristine coral

黒い岩水中に虹コナの海
くろい いわ　すいちゅう に　にじ　コナ の うみ

Because of my Scuba Diving Instructor job I am often able to travel to the Islands of Hawaii and Maui for diving jobs. The landscape is very different from the other Hawaiian islands. In Kona, there are beautiful smooth black rocks from the volcano with very little sand. On the other islands the rocks are very jagged and hard to walk on. When I go to the Island of Hawaii I usually go to Kona. Because of the way the mountains are the ocean in Kona is very protected so since there are no rough waters or strong currents the coral is much more vibrant in colors and abundance than the other islands. The red, yellow and green colored coral is very beautiful and of course there are a lot of different kinds of fish. This makes the Kona ocean my favorite spot to dive in Hawaii.

　私は、スキューバ ダイビングのインストラクターをしているおかげで、よくハワイ島やマウイ島へ行きます。この二つの島の風景は、他の島と比べて、大きく異なります。コナビーチには、火山から来た黒い岩があります。とても滑らかで、岩の上を歩くことが出来ます。他の島では、岩の表面がギザギザになっているので、歩くのは難しいです。ハワイ島に行く時、私は、大抵、コナへ行きます。山の地形が、コナの海を凄く穏やかなものにしています。波は小さく、強い潮の流れもありません。ハワイの他のダイビングスポットと比較して、コナの珊瑚の種類や数は、はるかに豊富で、色も鮮やかです。赤、黄、緑の珊瑚はとても美しく、勿論、色々な種類の魚がいます。そんな訳で、私の一番好きなダイビングスポットは、コナです。

Collaborative Haiku Poem – 蝶々専用

caterpillars reside
harvest prohibited for the present
dil and basil

蝶宿る摘み取り禁止デｲルバジル
ちょう やどる　つみとり きんし　デｲル バジル

I harvested basil leaves to make pesto and started washing, when I noticed a caterpillar with same green color as basil crawling out. Immediately I returned the caterpillar to the basil patch. Butterflies were also seen to lay eggs on the dill planted near basil. Thus, the harvest of dill and basil is prohibited until the end of the butterfly season.

　ペストを作ろうとバジルを摘み取り水につけた際、バジルと全く同じ緑色の蝶々の幼虫を見つけ、あわてて幼虫をバジル畑に戻しました。蝶々はバジルの隣に植えたデｲルにも産卵していましたから、蝶々の季節が終わるまで人間用のデｲルやバジルの収穫はしばらくお預けです。

海の音ビーチで弾む夏遊び
うみ の おと　ビーチ で はずむ　なつ あそび

Every weekend the local residents here are able to take advantage of the empty beaches and parks such as Waikiki beach. On the weekends this is a very popular spot with the local residents and the tourists but since Hawaii is under a quarantine, the beach and parks are all very empty! Parking is no problem and it is very easy to get a nice spot on the beach since it is just the local community. The feeling is a private beach! Every weekend we take advantage of that. During the week there is hardly anybody on the beach or in the park.

　現在、ハワイの人は、地元住民の特典として、毎週末、人出の少ないビーチや公園を楽しむことができます。例えば、週末のワイキキビーチは、もの凄い人出でしたが、ハワイは、強制隔離の下にある為、大変すいています。駐車スペースを見つけるのは簡単です。また、地元住民にとって、お気に入りの場所を見つけるのも簡単です。プライベートビーチのような気持ちです。毎週末、私たちは、この機会を大いに楽しんでいます。平日は、ビーチや公園に、殆ど誰もいません。
