east to west
power of face mask

東から西へと広がるマクスかな
ひがし から　にし へ と ひろがる　マスク かな

In Asian countries, especially eastern Asian countries, it is a custom to wear face masks in order to prevent the spread of respiratory diseases. Naturally, people in those countries wear masks during this Corona crisis. The custom is seen somewhat strange in the USA and Europe. However, the Corona crisis has changed all that, and masks are worn everywhere. There are all sorts of masks around, some of which are in doubtful effectiveness.

　アジア諸国、殊に東アジア諸国では古くから呼吸器関連の病気の伝染を防ぐ目的でマスクを着用する習慣があり、今回のコロナ危機でも皆そうしたのですが、欧米の人々にとっては奇異な光景と見られたようです。しかし、遅ればせながらマスクの威力が認められたのか、今や、世界中でマスクが着用されています。しかし、市中で見かけるマスクによってはこれでウイルス予防に効果があるのかなと疑問に感じる場合もあります。

Collaborative Haiku Poem – サービスベリーの実

the third year
fruits of serviceberry
red and ripe

三年目サービスベリーの実は熟し
さんねんめ　サービスベリーの　み は じゅくし

In our pollinator garden, there are two trees of serviceberry for wild birds. Until last year, the trees were skinny and berries were few and small. They were, more or less. ignored by wild birds. However, this year, leaves are lush and the trees are full of red berries, which resemble cherries. There is a Japanese saying “three years for peach and chestnut, eight years for persimmon (momokuri san-nen, kaki hachi-nen).”

　野鳥の餌にとサービスベリーを２本植えましたが、2年目の昨年までは実も葉もパッとせず野鳥もあまり来ず、サービスとは縁遠い存在でした。ところが3年目の今年は打って変わって葉は茂り、さくらんぼに似た沢山の赤い実をつけています。「桃栗三年柿8年」とはこのことと納得しています。

unexpectedly
local sunset boat tour

客乗せてオレンジ空にボート出す
きゃく のせて　オレンジぞら に　ボート だす

Two days ago I had a very nice surprise! There were a group of 8 local residents that wanted to go on a sunset tour! I didn’t think that I would be taking anybody out on the boat until August so it was so nice to be able to actually have customers on my boat again. The sunset was beautiful and although it was a little bit rough conditions everybody was fine. Until the tourists come back I will have very few chances to go out on the boat but it looks like I will get to occasionally go out!

　二日前、とても嬉しいサプライズがありました。地元のグループ８人が、サンセットツアーを申し込んできました。８月までお客様が来る予定はなかったので、実際にお客様を乗せることができて、本当に良かったです。海は、ちょっとうねっていましたが、お客様に問題はなく、夕焼けが美しかったです。観光客が戻って来るまで、船を出す機会は少ないですが、たまに出かける可能性はあると思います。

boats are ready
engines roar in approval

磨き上げ出港の日を待つボート
みがきあげ　しゅっこう の ひ を　まつ ボート

The last two months I have been working on both the Atlantis submarines and tugboats and also the Glass Bottom boat. What I have been doing is getting them ready for the eventual return of our customers. Other boats have been doing the same thing and now all of the boats in Kewalo Basin and Honolulu harbor are ready for the returning customers. This will start in July. So during June I go to the Glass Bottom boat every day for cleaning and checking the engine. It is very important to check the engines every day since they are not being used very much.

　この２か月間、私は、アトランティス潜水艦とタグ ボート、そして、グラス ボトム ボートの仕事をしてきました。私の仕事内容は、お客様が、再び、ハワイに戻っていらっしゃった時の準備でした。他の船のスタッフも同じことを行なっていました。現在、ケワロ湾とホノルル港に停泊している船は、すべて準備万端、お客様を待っています。本格始動は７月です。６月中は、エンジンの確認と清掃のため、毎日、グラス ボトム ボートに行きます。エンジンをあまり使用していないので、毎日のチェックが非常に重要です。
