In the middle of Kapiolani Park facing out towards the ocean is the Waikiki Natatorium. It is the World War 1 monument and was opened in 1927. It is a beautiful building which consists of grand stands over looking a 100 X 40 meter salt water pool. The story is that the plumbing was all wrong for the pool. The designer apparently forgot that Hawaii has a high tide and a low tide so the visibility was often very bad and there was a problem with urchins. The Health Department closed it in 1963 and in the late 90’s there was an attempt to renovate it but the project was halted during the State election and the funds were returned to the State. The building has slowly fallen apart while the surrounding Waikiki area has changed. In a way it is sad to see such a beautiful structure fall apart. The pool is now completely filled with urchins!

　カピオラニ公園の真ん中に、海に面してワイキキ スイミング プールがあります。プールとその施設は、第一次世界大戦のモニュメントで、戦没者慰霊碑として、１９２７年に開設されました。この建物は美しい観覧席と、縦１００メートル、横４０メートルの海水プールからなっています。ところが問題は、使った配管のサイズがプールのサイズと違ったそうです。設計者は、ハワイの海に干潮と満潮があるのを忘れたそうです。プールの透明度が非常に悪く、ウニが増えてきたことも問題だったそうです。１９６３年にハワイの保健所はプールを閉鎖しました。その後、１９９０年代後半に改修の試みがありました。しかし、ハワイ州の選挙の時、プロジェクトは中止され、資金は州に返還されました。ワイキキエリア周辺が変化するにつれ、建物はだんだんボロボロになりました。ある意味、このような美しい建物がボロボロになって行くのを見るのは悲しいことです。今ではプールはウニ畑のようになりました。

solitary boat

セーリング夕日に溶けるヨットマン
セーリング　ゆうひ に とける　ヨットマン

On the sunset tours that I drive the boat on my favorite picture is when there is a sail boat in front of the setting sun or close to it. It is such a peaceful picture and I always wonder what the person or the people on the boat are doing. Are they just out for the sunset tour or are they sailing from one of the other islands or maybe even from another country. It is both a peaceful scene and in a way a lonely scene. Just a sailboat out in the ocean slowly sailing into the sunset. I imagine that the person sailing the boat has left all of their troubles at the dock and they are just enjoying the beautiful sunset and the peace of the ocean.

　サンセットツアーを行なった時、船上から目にする風景の中で、私のもっとも好きなものは、沈みゆく夕日を背にしたヨットの姿、あるいは、夕日の近くを横切るヨットの姿です。本当に平和な風景です。ヨットに乗っている人は何をしているのだろうといつも思います。ちょうど夕日を楽しむ為にやって来たのだろうか、ハワイの他の島からやって来たのだろうか、あるいは、外国から来たのかも知れません。私にとって、それは安らかな光景ですが、一方で、ある意味、寂しさを感じさせる光景でもあります。海に出てゆっくり夕日に向かって航行するヨット。船上の人たちは、すべての悩みを桟橋に残し、ただ美しい夕日と穏やかな海を楽しんでいるのだと思います。

Collaborative Haiku Poem – 烏合

each junco
eats bird food alone in a feeder
never in group

ユキヒメドリ一羽で食す烏合せず
ユキヒメドリ　いちわ で しょくす　うごう せず

In kanji, u of ugou means bird and gou means gathering. The Kojien dictionary defines ugou as gathering without rules like that of birds. We often see a bunch of sparrows gather in one feeder. But, juncos (yukihimedori) do not behave like sparrows. A Junco in a feeder is always alone, never in two or more. The expression of ugou first appears in a book written in the late Han period, indicating that the expressions has been used nearly two thousand years. As juncos are originated in the northern Europe, they obviously were not seen in inland China. I did not notice this habit of junco before. I look forward to seeing juncos again the next winter.

　烏合（うごう）とは、広辞苑によると、鳥が集まるように規則もなく統一もなく集まることととあります。この鳥（う）の字は雀の場合には当てはまりますが、雪鳥と呼ばれるユキヒメドリには当てはまらないことに気がつきました。複数の雀が一つの餌箱に集まる様子はよく目にしますが、餌箱にいるユキヒメドリは常に一羽です。烏合の字が最初に記されたのが後漢書の一つとのことですから、烏合の衆などにこの表現は２千年近く使われていることになります。ユキヒメドリは北欧原産故に、中国内陸では見られなかったのでしょう。迂闊なことに、毎年、裏庭にやってくるユキヒメドリのこの習性を知ったのは今年が初めてです。来年の冬、ユキヒメドリが戻ってくるのが楽しみです。

海のショー鯨探すと海豚出る
うみ の ショー　くじら さがす と　いるか でる

In my job on the glass bottom boat, every day and every hour is completely different. It is impossible to get bored because nothing is the same. Along with different customers each hour there is a chance of seeing different marine animals each hour. Recently on one tour I had a very big surprise when a monk seal came up to the boat! That is very rare. The next tour in the same spot there were dolphins and then the following tour a few turtles. The next day in the same area there were whales! So every tour is different and I never have to worry about being bored!

　グラスボトムボートの仕事は、毎回、一度として同じことの繰り返しはありません。ですから、この仕事をしていて退屈することはありません。お客様は、毎回、違いますし、ツアーで出会う海の動物も、毎回、違います。最近、あるツアーでモンクアザラシが船の近くにやって来ました。それは滅多にないことなので本当に驚きました。次のツアーでは、同じ場所でイルカと出会いました。更にその次のツアーでは、数匹のカメでした。翌日、同じエリアにはクジラがいました。このように、毎回のツアーはそれぞれ異なり、私は退屈することを心配する必要はありません。
