Collaborative Haiku Poem – 蝶々の敵

庭の友蝶々の敵カーデｲナル
にわ の とも　ちょうちょう の てき　カーディナル

Ever since we witnessed the scene where cardinals were eating fat caterpillars, I have tried several ways to protect the caterpillars from cardinals. Butterflies lay eggs on parsley, and caterpillars grow by eating parsley. I cover the parsley patches with wire nettings so that cardinals can’t peck at the caterpillars. Some areas of the parsley patches are left uncovered so that butterflies may lay more eggs. Caterpillars are completely defenseless, and the number of butterflies is said to be decreasing. These are the excuses that I use to combat cardinals. But, cardinals are very clever, and they are also precious in gardens. I tell them, or rather to myself, that I will feed them well during winter, so leave the caterpillars alone in Summer.

　カーディナルが丸々と太った蝶々の幼虫（caterpillar) を食べるのを目撃して以来、幼虫達をカーディナルから守る手段をあれこれ考案してみました。蝶々はパセリの葉の上に産卵し、幼虫はパセリを食べて成長しますから、金網でパセリを覆いカーディナルの嘴が幼虫に届かない工夫をしてみました。パセリを全て覆ってしまうと、蝶々の産卵する場も奪う事になりますから、幼虫のいる場所だけを覆ってみました。幼虫は全く無防備で、かつ、蝶々の数が減少している現在、カーディナルに辛抱してもらっているわけですが、カーディナルもなかなか賢く、油断できません。庭に来る小鳥の中でも真っ赤なカーディナルは貴重です。冬季にはちゃんと餌をあげるからと、カーディナルに、というより自らに言い聞かせています。

楽しみの鮪弁当船の上
たのしみ の　まぐろ べんとう　ふね の うえ

I am very lucky at my Captain’s job because all of us staff have lunch bought for us every day! Each day is usually different but my favorite lunch and in fact I can eat it for breakfast and dinner too!, is tuna that has been flash fried on the outside but is still raw on the inside. I usually have it over salad and sometimes I will have rice with it. I can eat this every day and never get tired of it!! This is a very popular lunch in Hawaii!

　私が船長の仕事をするとき、毎日、スタッフ全員の昼食が用意されます。それは凄く幸運なことです。 実は昼食だけでなく、朝食と夕食も食べられます。 出されるお弁当の種類は、毎日、大抵違いますが、私の一番好きな昼ご飯は鮪のたたきです。刺身ですが、鮪の外側だけ焼いて、真ん中は生です。大抵サラダの上に魚を置いたものですが、時々ライスも食べます。私は鮪のたたき弁当を毎日食べても飽きることはありません。これはハワイで人気の食事です。

Fall is in the air
sunset chases the ocean

日の入りの黄色い波や秋近し
ひのいり の　きいろい なみ や　あき ちかし

The month of August is now here and I already can see some signs of fall in Hawaii.  The winds have slowly started to go from East to more of a North East and sometimes North wind which makes it much calmer on the South shore.  One of the big changes is everyday the sunset is about a minute sooner and the sun is slowly getting closer to setting in the ocean and not the Waianae mountain range.  I think this makes more beautiful sunset.

　八月に入りハワイは秋の気配を感じられるようになりました。東から吹く風は少しずつ北東方面からの風に変わっています。時々北からの風になり、南のワイキキ方面の海はとても穏やかになります。一番大きい変化は、日の入りが毎日一分位ずつ早くなり、日没がワイアナエ山脈からだんだん海の近くに沈むようになってきていることです。海への日没の方がもっと綺麗だと私は思います。
