きのうは 皆既月食が よく 見えました～

In case any of you missed last nights lunar eclipse like I did. Courtesy of a good friend I brought a beautiful photo for everyone to see. 🙂 Hopefully you will all be able to admire it as much as I have. Staring at the heavens has been a favorite pastime of mine since I was a child. I was grateful my friend could share this with me. And I felt obligated to share with all of you. 🙂

Last night a friend called and said he saw an article by me a magazine. At first I didn’t believe him because it had been so long since I wrote and submitted it. So I went to the book store anyways  to check and sure enough there it was. My first, and probably last, published article in this month’s Hawaii Skin Diver magazine =)

昨日のブログで「カカオとココアの違いは不明」と書きましたら、編集部さんからグーグルでの検索はいかがとの助け舟がきました。追記にあった検索例をまとめてみると、カカオは植物名で、ココアはカカオから製造される品名となります。しかし、他の食べ物、例えばバナナはバナナケーキやバナナブレッドとバナナの名前は変わりません。なぜ、カカオはココアとよばれるようになったのか？そこで、グーグルの英語版で検索をしてみましたら、linguistic（言語学的）なアプローチがありました。種々の説明がありますが、元来のカカオがスペイン人によってヨーロッパに運ばれた際に発音がなまってココアになったという点で一致しています。この際、ココアという言葉を廃止し、カカオに統一すべきとする意見もあります。（ちなみに、スペイン語にはココアという言葉はなく、飲み物はホットチョコレートと呼ぶそうです））。カカオにココア、繰り返して言うと舌を噛みそうになるのは確かです。

ヌービーの一代目の飼い主（我々は２代目）のデイブさんが南米コロンビアから一時帰郷、ヌービーに会い方々、訪ねて来ました。「これはコロンビアからのお土産です」とくれたのがカカオビーンです。一袋のカカオビーンはコロンビアでは４ドルで買えるが、オマハでは４０ドルはするとのこと。

料理に使うには、ビーンを弱火で１０分余り空煎りした後、１５分ほど冷ましたら、ビーンの薄皮を剝き、砕くのです。弱火で空煎りするのはビーンに豊富に含まれているビタミンCをなるべく破壊しないためです。石鉢でビーンを砕いている間つくづく思いました、カカオビーンの原産地のメキシコの人はよくもまあ、こんなに込み入った調整法を考えたもんだと。

ビーンは細かく砕いているとだんだんココア粉みたいになってきますが、味はおなじみのチョコレートからはほど遠く、むしろ苦くさえあります。カカオは１６世紀にアズテク王国を征服したスペイン人がヨーロッパに持ち帰り、広まったのですが、甘いチョコレートとして知られるには更に２百年かかりました。

ところで、カカオとココアの違いは不明、探しても見つかりません。

This morning I found a spot on the south shore that looked like a good place to go diving. However, once I reached the break the current was ripping hard and I realized I might have made a mistake. After fighting the current for a short time I decided to cut my losses and head in.  On the way I came across a few tako holes. When I pulled the tako out they wrapped their tentacles around my arm, squeezed me, and then shoot ink at me to try and get away. By the time I reached the shore I had ink all over my arm, hands, and fingers. Although I washed and scrubbed, the ink is still all over me.

あんなに笑いが我慢できんかったのは久しぶりかもしれん。。。昨日、偶然テレビ番組の「リンカーン」を見て。浜ちゃんとかが着ぐるみ着ていろんな競技でポイント稼いでいくんだが…。もうごっついおもしろかった。中に入ってるの芸人のおっさんたちなんだけど、もう着ぐるみがかわいくて。。。動きが最高でした。寝てる母がいるし、何回も我慢したけど、あかんかったわー。涙が出るくらい笑った（笑） 来週も続き見たいくらい。リンカーン、笑いをありがとう。

My visit to the dentist definitely was not exciting and more painful than my last visit. Especially when her tools would hit close to my gums. All my tricks I normally use to keep my mind off of the pain weren’t working. So I just clutched my hands tightly together and just dealt with it. I’ve got another four appointments scheduled next month and into Feburary. More exciting times I’m sure. 🙂

Finally! After working thirteen grueling days in a row I have a day off. And although I considered buying a beer or two to celebrate, I decided to wait for something far more worthwhile. Instead, I think I’ll catch up on some much need rest and then hit the books and do some studying. Not that exciting, but imagine my dentist appointment tomorrow will be. Stay Tuned. 🙂
