In Oahu the whales start coming around the end of October. January and February seems to be the height of the whale season. I see them almost every day in my job as both a scuba diving instructor and on the submarine. Unfortunately I only see them on the surface, never underwater. The whales are so prevalent here that the whale watching tour has a 100% guarantee of seeing whales. If there are no whale sightings on the tour then if one takes another tour during the season then it is for free! Usually there are whales as soon as the boat leaves the harbor. One almost always sees both the Mother and the baby. If a single whale is spotted then it is almost always a male.

During the holiday season Atlantis Submarines is very busy. My main job is to do the Japanese narrations and during the New Year holidays the amount of Japanese customers is very high. This past holiday season I had to work 15 days in a row with each day lasting about 12 to 13 hours! Towards the end of the 15 days of working I had the same dream about 3 times. In my dream I am giving my Japanese narration on the submarine and during the narration I am out of my body looking at myself. Towards the end of the narration I realize that there is nobody on board! I quick go up to the top deck as for some reason the submarine is still on the surface. Once I get to the surface I look out and the ocean is very calm and although the sky is all gray it is fairly bright. The scary thing is that all I can see is water! No Waikiki beach or any shoreline. I always wake up at that point and tell myself that I need a day off!

木にまつわるお話をもう一つ。

ガラス窓をとおして、裏庭に生える大きな楓の根元で何か小さな物が動いているのがみえます。ところがその小さな物は色も模様も木の皮と同じでたちまち見逃してしまいます。すると間もなく、その物は木の幹をちょこちょこと昇り始めました。

初めてブラウンクリーパーを見たのは２、３週前の事です。珍しい小鳥ではないとのことですが、どうもこれまで見た記憶はありません。何処からか移って来たのにちがいありません。

Googleによると、この小鳥はともかく木のてっぺんまで昇りきると下へ飛び降り、再び昇りだすとの事で、この習性で見分けでつきます。次の木へ飛び移る様子はまるで枯れ葉が風に舞っているようだといわれます。

（小さい鳥ですので、引き延ばしてボケでしまいました。水平に伸びる赤い枝の先に着たのは偶然です）。

アルバータクリッパーと呼ぶ冷たい風がカナダから吹き込んで、一昨日、昨日と寒く曇った日が続きました。
今日は打って変わってよい天気。
庭を駆け回っているリスもちょっとひなたぼっこをすることに。

1月19日から21日の3日間、大学時代の友人2人と、宮古島に旅行に行ってきました。
大阪から沖縄へ飛行機で1時間半、沖縄から宮古島まで飛行機で40分と、乗り継いでいきました。
真冬の大阪に比べ、宮古島は気温20度と、春の暖かさ。

青い空と海、穏やかな時間の流れの中で、ドライブをしたり、浜辺でのんびりしたり、ダイビングをしたり・・3日間とは思えない充実した時を過ごしました。

また旅に行こう！！
