with old age comes
gathering wisdom and
weak memory
Getting old isn’t a bad thing. With it comes a wisdom gained through years of struggle and experience. Although one does tend to be forgetful as memory begins to grow weak, when you take everything as a whole, old age resembles the masterful endgame moves in chess or go. It’s kind of like the Japanese yosegi puzzle box, in which many different types of wood are gathered and assembled. There is much to be appreciated within the unique patterns of each arrangement.

lines on my cheek
hurt from all the smiling
we all exclaim
I work a lot with elderly people in the course of my job. They are very playful and expressive, yet also tenacious and persevering. Even working with those who can’t speak, I get happy just by seeing their eyes open. After finally seeing a change in their expression, even if that expression is one of disgust, I get happy just to see a change. (Of course, I do try my best to avoid inducing this type of expression and instead try for a happy face as much as possible.)
Anyways, when I’m in the hospital working with the elderly, I always end up smiling. So, when work is over and it’s time to go home, my cheeks hurt. Other staff have the same sort of experience as I do, so we sometimes laugh together and say “those cheeks hurt again today, don’t they?”.

I have a patient that attracted a blistering infection on his leg. No one know’s how he got it and where it came from. The infection started as a red spot on his shin that mutated into a large blister that eventually opened allowing pus to flow. Smaller blisters and red bumps also began to form and cover his shin and calf. Because the patient hated to go to the doctors, he was forced to do so and was diagnosed with an infection. He was then given an antibiotic and directions for how to care for the infection that he was to give to his caregivers. He is now home and his leg is being cared for. But he is feeling a good amount of pain daily.
If you are a caregiver for a patient or you know someone that exhibits redness anywhere on the skin, please don’t hesitate to get it checked. If you, as a caregiver, bathe this person, be sure to wear gloves as you are not sure if there is any infection or not. Regularly monitor your patients for any skin discoloration. And keep an eye on what they are eating and drinking. Also, watch for any changes in behavior and lifestyle patterns. Such things can be telling of an oncoming problem.
Have a great day!
