When I was growing up in Iowa, every year the school district would select about 20 to 30 elementary students at the fifth grade level to travel to Japan for a foreign exchange program. I was fortunate to be one of the students from the entire school district to be selected to go. The purpose of the exchange was to improve relations between my hometown and our sister city in Japan.

Japan would also send students to the United States. My family hosted one student which improved my chances for being selected. Also, when my school principal asked for volunteers, I made sure to shout “yes!” After being selected, I traveled to Japan with the student group, and stayed together with two different host families along with another student from my school named Mike.

The first family made a very strong impression on me. They lived in the countryside near Kofu on a small farm. The house they lived in was a Japanese style, two story house with sliding doors. I was amazed because the house had a large garden which I didn’t expect because we were told that most homes don’t have big yards in Japan.

The family consisted of a father, mother, two sons, and a daughter. The sons were about the same age as Mike and I. The daughter was a few years younger. The boys were really sociable and fun to hang out and play with. The boys spoke some English which helped us to get along. They also loved to play video games which was great because it was winter time and was so cold outside! The daughter was very cute and just a little bit naughty.

The parents were both extremely nice. The mom cooked all the meals and tried to get us to try real Japanese food like dry seaweed and steamed white rice. However, one day when I was not feeling well, the mother worried that I was homesick so she took me to McDonald’s. Afterwards, I felt better and really appreciated her kind gesture.

One day, Mike and I were fortunate to be able to go to school with the two boys. We practiced some Japanese calligraphy together and played some soccer with some other boys. Overall, my trip was very exciting, made me enthusiastic about one day returning to Japan, and left me with a very favorable impression of Japanese people and their families.

　山梨県甲府市の思い出です。私は、アメリカの中西部にあるアイオワ州デモインの出身です。私が小学校５年生の時、アイオワ州の公立学区では、毎年、２０人から３０人の交換留学プログラムの参加者を選考していました。対象は、小学校５年生の生徒で、行き先は、日本でした。幸運にも、私は、アイオワ州の全学区の中から留学生の一人として選ばれました。留学の目的は、私の故郷の町と姉妹都市である日本の町との関係を深めることでした。
　
　私の家では、以前、交換留学生を受け入れたことがありました。また、校長先生からボランティアを頼まれた時、私は、必ず、大声で、「はい」と答えたものです。これらのことが、選考の助けになったのかも知れません。交換留学生に選ばれた後、私は、留学プログラムの一員として日本へ行きました。日本で私は、マイクと言う同じ小学校の生徒と、二つの家に滞在しました。
　
　私は、最初に滞在した家のご家族に、忘れられないほど深く感動しました。家族は、甲府市の近くの田園地帯にある、小さな農場に住んでいました。日本式の家で、引き戸を使った二階建てでした。その家をはじめて見た時、私は、本当に驚きました。日本では、大きな庭を持っている家は、ほとんどないと聞いていたのに、想像もしない、大きな庭があったからです。
　
　その家は、父親、母親、二人の息子さん、そして、一人の娘さんの５人家族でした。息子さんは、マイクや私と同じくらいの年でした。娘さんは、私達より、二つか三つ、若かったと思います。男の子とは、すぐに打ち解けて、外で遊び回りました。二人とも、英語を少し話せたので、仲良くする助けとなりました。二人は、ビデオゲームも好きでした。日本へ行った時は、冬だったので、外は大変寒く、好都合でした。娘さんは、本当に可愛らしい子でしたが、少し、いたずら好きでした。
　
　ご両親は、とても素敵な方々でした。お母さんは、毎回、手料理を作って下さいました。また、海苔や白米など普段の日本の食事を体験させようとしてくれました。しかし、ある日、私が体調を崩した時、ホームシックになったのかと心配して、マクドナルドに連れて行って下さいました。その後、気分が良くなりました。お母さんのやさしい心遣いに心から感謝しました。
　
　ある日、マイクと私は、２人の男の子と一緒に学校へ行くことができました。私達は、少し習字の練習をしました。そして、他の子達とサッカーをしました。私の日本滞在を振り返る時、非常に刺激的でした。私の日本への興味は、この１０才の時、２週間、山梨県の甲府へ留学した時に始まります。その時、日本の人と日本の文化に心を奪われました。そして、いつの日か、必ず、日本に戻ってきたいと思ったものです。以上、山梨県甲府市の思い出です。

サーフィンに乗れば延々別世界
サーフィン に　のれば えんえん　べっせかい

The summer is coming to Hawaii and when that happens the south side of the island starts to have summer swells and that means that there is some very nice surfing available very close and also the perfect size waves for people like me who are new to the sport and not very good! There are surfing spots close to Ala Moana Park where the amateur surfing championships are held in the summer. Sometimes the swell can be so high that the submarines have to cancel for the day along with the diving and snorkeling boats. Even though I have lived in Hawaii for many years it is a sport that I have recently started and I am very confident in saying I am the worst surfer in the world!

　もうすぐハワイに夏がやって来ます。オアフ島の南の海には、緩やかで長い、うねるような波がやってきます。波に幅があって、丸く巻き込む感じです。夏のこのうねりのおかげで、私達は、ノースショアに行かなくても、近場でサーフインが出来ます。また、私のような初心者でも楽しむことが出来ます。夏には、アラモアナ公園の近くで、素人の為のサーフィン大会が行われます。時々、夏の波は、凄く高くなります。そんな日には、一日中、観光用潜水艦とダイビングとスノーケリングのツアーをキャンセルしなくてはいけません。私はハワイに何年も住んでいるのに、やっと最近になってサーフィンを始めました。私は世界一、下手くそなサーファーです。
