Haiku Poem –

empty Waikiki
silent boats fill the harbor
waiting for Christmas

(Jim version)

(Michiko version)

In Hawaii, one of the busiest seasons is the Christmas holidays. A few days before Christmas it starts to get busy but Christmas day and the week following is the busiest time here. The busy season continues for about a week after New Years and then it starts to slow down with the end of January and February being not so busy. For me, the few weeks before Christmas are very slow. Although in my scuba diving job and submarine job I still have customers there are days when there are no customers at all or very few. It is unfortunate because the ocean is often very calm and the visibility excellent. Waikiki beach is fairly empty and it is possible to get early checki in at the hotel. The price of plane tickets and hotels are often much cheaper at this time.

Pal

Kishore-san came to Zengyo from Kawasaki, and we made a season’s greeting card by using two computers. NACOS will send by E-mail. Kishore-san is working to refine his Japanese with NACOS method, so we talked about the direction and confirmed about his progress in Japanese.

We went to Fujisawa civic art gallery to see Mukoyama-san’s work of art. The work of unglazed potteries show the warmth and humbleness.

Collaborative Haiku Poem –

menacing icicles
melt and refreeze
two feet wide

One-shaku is about 30cm, roughly one foot.

keen hammers
say hello from the roof
frozen columns

(Michiko version)

It is a beautiful winter sight to see long, thin icicles lining up and sparkling in winter sun. One morning, I saw a thick glass-like board hanging under the east-facing eaves by the front door. A close inspection revealed it was a board made up by several icicles that were melted in the morning sun and quickly refrozen in the afternoon. Each icicle was very big, 1.5 inches in diameter. I’ve seen icicles every winter, but never seen an ice board made up by icicles. These icicles look menacing. By the way, an icicle can be a sharp knife. Avoid walking under eaves in winter!

Collaborative Haiku Poem –

a snowy morning
scarlet wings fly
cardinals

(Yoko version)

snow pilling up
red wings fly high
cheer me up

(Michiko version)

Since the end of November, it has been below freezing temperature in Nebraska. In spite of my worry for the safety of little wild birds in cold snowy morning, they fly across the sky, as if to say “Don’t worry about us.” It is particularly wonderful to see red wings of cardinals in the morning haze.
