I bought a house in Des Moines, which is the capital city of the state of Iowa. I live in the west part of the city. The state capitol building is famous for having a gold dome. The city has four seasons. It can be very hot in the summer and extremely cold in the winter. Most people own cars and can drive anywhere in the city in about twenty minutes. There are no mountains or oceans nearby. However, there are lakes and rivers that people can visit. In fact, the Des Moines River flows through Des Moines and joins the Mississippi River somewhere on the border of Iowa and Missouri. Near my house, there is a creek with woods. I like the location because deer often appear there.

　アイオワ州の州都はデモインと言います。私は、ここ、デモインに家を買いました。私の家は、デモイン市の西の地区にあります。州議会の議事堂は、金色のドーム（丸屋根）を持つことで有名です。この町には、四季があります。夏は非常に暑く、冬は非常に寒くなります。ほとんどの住民は車を持っていて、町のどこにでも２０分くらいで行けます。 近くに山や海はありません。しかし、気軽に行ける川や湖はたくさんあります。実は、デモイン川という大きな川がデモインの町を流れています。この川は、アイオワ州とミズーリ州の州境でミシシッピ川と合流します。家の近くには小川と林があります。私は、この場所が好きです。鹿がよく姿を現すからです。

Christmas is now over and in Hawaii we are getting ready for New Years. In Hawaii a lot of the Japanese traditions for New Years are evident, especially the New Years foods. One of the main things that closely resemble the Japan tradition is the Tuna that is eaten on New Years day. The tuna and other fish are very popular during New Years and all the fish markets sell out of their fish very fast. One of the biggest differences that I have noticed in the New Years celebrations between Hawaii and Japan is that Waikiki is very loud with lots of partying taking place while in Japan it is very quiet and when it gets to midnight all one can here is the ringing of the bell from the temples.

　クリスマスが終わり、私たちは、新年の準備をしています。ハワイには、日本のお正月の伝統がいろいろ入り込んでいます。特に、新年の食べ物です。一番似ているところは、元日に魚を食べることです。マグロをはじめとして、魚はとても人気があり、すぐに売り切れます。一方、新年のお祝いの仕方は、例えば、ワイキキでは、たくさんパーティーが行なわれ、大変、騒々しいですが、日本は、凄く静かで、真夜中になると、お寺から鐘の音が聞こえてきます。ハワイと日本の最大の違いだと思います。

In Hawaii, one of the busiest seasons is the Christmas holidays. A few days before Christmas it starts to get busy but Christmas day and the week following is the busiest time here. The busy season continues for about a week after New Years and then it starts to slow down with the end of January and February being not so busy. For me, the few weeks before Christmas are very slow. Although in my scuba diving job and submarine job I still have customers there are days when there are no customers at all or very few. It is unfortunate because the ocean is often very calm and the visibility excellent. Waikiki beach is fairly empty and it is possible to get early checki in at the hotel. The price of plane tickets and hotels are often much cheaper at this time.

　ハワイで最も忙しい季節の１つは、クリスマス休暇の時期です。クリスマスの数日前から徐々に忙しくなり、クリスマスの日と、それに続く週が、書き入れ時になります。この忙しさは、１月７日頃まで続きます。そして、１月下旬からだんだん客足が遠のき、二月には、暇になります。私のスキューバダイビングの仕事と潜水艦の仕事に関して言えば、クリスマス前の二週間は本当に暇です。お客様がお見えにならない日もあれば、非常に少ない日もあります。残念なことに、この時期は、海は凄く穏やかで、透明度も最高です。また、ワイキキビーチはガラガラですし、ホテルも早めにチェックインすることが出来ます。飛行機の切符やホテル代も、はるかに安いのが普通です。
