this is mine
hold a prey mercilessly
hawk’s talons

One morning, there was a noise coming from our backyard. When I came up to the French windows, I saw a Cooper’s hawk standing near our house. Moments after I noticed that the hawk was holding a prey under its talons, the hawk flew away. The color of the prey was light brown with black dots. It was a big shock to realize that the prey was a Northern Flicker, a pair of which, a few minutes ago, came to a feeder and gave us the pleasure of seeing them. The next morning, even more troubling was to see the surviving Northern Flicker at the feeder, seeming to search and wait for the lost one.

　古い楓の木の方向からの物音に、枯れ枝が落ちたのかと、ガラス戸に近寄って当たりを見回してみると、家の外壁近くに一羽のクーパー鷹がすっくと立っていました。怪我でもしたのかと鷹を見た一瞬、鷹は飛び去りましたが、両足の黄色の爪の下には紛れもなく餌食が。ちらっと見えたのは薄茶に黒の斑点模様。数分前に餌にやってきたノーザンフリッカーであるのはショックでした。翌朝、つがいの生き残った方のノーザンフリッカーが、現場に飛んで来て相棒を探しているのを見るのは更にショックでした。

When the sister city relationship was established between Des Moines and Kofu, Yamanashi Prefecture gave a Japanese style bell as a gift to the State of Iowa. Every year, the bell is rung at exactly 9am on New Year’s Eve in Des Moines since that is when New Year’s Day begins in Kofu. The bell is struck 108 times in accordance with Buddhism. The Japan America Society of Iowa is responsible for the event. Every person that attends rings the bell at least one time. Sometimes the children get to ring the bell several times. The bell is next to the Iowa Supreme Court building and across the street from the Capitol.

　アイオワ州のデモイン市と山梨県の甲府市が、姉妹都市の関係を結んだ時、山梨県はアイオワ州に、和風の鐘を贈りました。デモイン市では、毎年、大晦日午前９時きっかりに鐘をつきます。甲府は、その時、ちょうど午前零時だからです。鐘は仏教の教えに従って、１０８回つきます。この行事は、アイオワ日米協会が担当しています。出席した人は誰でも、少なくとも１回、鐘をつきます。時に、子供たちは、何回か鐘をつくことができます。この鐘は、アイオワ州最高裁判所の建物の隣り、州議会の向かいにあります。

verdant domes
arum stands amidst jungle
tropical garden

I saw the plant at the tropical gardens of the Lauritzen Garden in Omaha. I enjoyed the experience of seeing the plant for the first time, even though the plant is at a young stage and not blooming, yet.

Titan arum (Amorphophallus titanum) is well known for its unique smell. The plant is native solely to Western Sumatra and Western Java, but cultivated by botanical gardens around the world (Wikipedia). Blooming of its flower has been published and recorded.

オマハ市のLauritzen Gardenに増設されたこの熱帯植物園には初めて行きました。見たことのない植物にお目にかかるとは予想外でした。開花すると必ずニュースになること間違いなしです。

アルムは 俗名Titan arum、異臭で知られたインドネシア原産の植物です。arumは英和辞典には“てんなんしょうの類”とあり、広辞苑で“てんなんしょう”を引くと“天南星、サトイモ科テンナンショウ属植物の総称、地下に球茎を有し、特徴ある大形の仏焔苞に包まれた肉腫花序をつける。Wikipediaの中文versionでは巨花魔芋と一読して特徴の全てが表現されています。世界各地の植物園で栽培されており、開花すると世界中にそのニュースが流れます。今回見たのは緑色の３メートル余りの木で、枝が水平に伸びてその上には何もないと、一見して奇妙な、見たことのない植物で印象に残りました。
