While spearfishing I enjoy looking for octopus. They can be difficult to spot but it’s relaxing for me. I float on surface looking down for signs of octopus. I usually look for holes in the reef surrounded by little rocks. Usually the rocks are circled around a hole and there’s at least one white rock. Sometimes I see little fish playing around a hole. Other times, something just looks out of place. When I see something, I float above the hole, I wait and I watch. Hopefully I’ll see the octopus’s eyes will looking up at me. Or their body will blink. But if I don’t see anything, I’ll check the hole with my spear. Sometimes the octopus is hiding inside. Sometimes there’s nothing. If there’s a octopus in the hole it normally starts fighting. Once I get it out of the hole I grab it by the head bite it just below the eye. The octopus becomes paralyzed and turn from brown to ghost white. The battle is over and I have dinner.

　私は、スピア フィッシングをしながら蛸探しも楽しみます。蛸を見つけるのは簡単なことではありません。しかし、蛸探しをすると、不思議とゆったりした気分になれます。私は水面から海中を見て、タコの居場所を探します。普通、小さな岩に取り囲まれた珊瑚の中の穴にいます。そして、その小さな岩の中に少なくとも一つ、白い岩があります。時々、小さな魚が穴の回りで遊んでいます。時に、それは、何か場違いな感じがします。穴の中に何か見つけた時、私は、穴の上にとどまって注意深く待ちます。うまくいけば、私を見上げる蛸や、すぐに体の色を変える蛸の姿を見つけます。何も見つけられない時は、銛（もり）で穴の中を調べます。中に隠れていることもあれば、いないこともあります。穴の中に蛸がいる時、通常、戦いが始まります。穴から引き出したら、頭をつかみ、目の真下を噛みます。蛸は麻痺し、茶色から青白くなります。戦いは終わり、私は夕食にありつきます。

In Hawaii there are many popular sports that you can find any where. Typical sports like soccer, football, baseball and basketball are all played here. We also have many different water sports that one can find anywhere else in the world. One very popular sport here that is somewhat unique is our outrigger canoe racing season. Although it is also done in other countries, it seems to be much more prevalent here. We have two seasons here. First a short distance season and then the long distance season where the main event is the Molokai channel to Oahu race which is 26 miles, 42 kilometers. Even though that is such a main event here, the teams from Australia, Fiji and Tahiti are often at the top! One interesting thing that I discovered is that even though Hawaii is coming into summer, New Zealand and Australia are going into winter and whenever there is a storm in New Zealand, a week or so after the ocean is affected here. The result is what is called a south swell where the shoreline is so rough that the outrigger canoes do not go out but the beaches are full of surfers!

ハワイにも、どこででも目にする人気スポーツはあります。例えば、サッカー、フットボール、野球、バスケットボールは、ここにもあります。また、世界中で目にする水上スポーツも、ハワイにあります。ここ、ハワイで、ややユニークなスポーツとして非常に人気があるのは、アウトリガー カヌー レースです。他の国でも行われていますが、ここではもっと普及しています。ハワイでは、二つシーズンがあります。近距離シーズンと長距離シーズンです。長距離シーズンの一番有名なレースは、モロカイ島からオアフ島へ渡るレースです。２６マイル、４２キロメートルです。ハワイの一番有名な海のレースなのに、オーストラリア、タヒチとフィジーのチームがしばしばトップにいます。一つ面白いことを見つけました。ハワイに、もうすぐ夏が来ます。そして、ニュージーランドとオーストラリアには、冬が来ます。もし、ニュージーランドで嵐があれば、約一週間後に、ハワイの海は影響を受けます。南からのうねりと言う現象です。その結果、海岸線が非常に荒れてアウトリガーカヌーはできませんが、ビーチはサーファーでいっぱいになります。

This May I helped with building a mikoshi for the Japan America Society. The mikoshi is an important part of festivals in Japan. It will be used to share Japanese culture with the public at the annual Asian festival in Des Moines. I helped with cutting and sanding the beams for carrying the mikoshi as well as the base. This is the first time that any local organization has made a mikoshi. We are proud to make this happen.

On May 25th, the public got to see the mikoshi during the opening ceremony for the local Asian festival. There were 12 people from the Japan America Society that carried the mikoshi. The group included two or three Japanese volunteers that currently live and work in Des Moines. All of us wore happi coats and headbands with the kanji for “festival.” We paraded the mikoshi around a public square downtown for about 20 to 30 minutes. The weather was clear and sunny which was perfect even though we got a little hot.

　この５月、私は、アイオワ日米協会でお神輿を作るお手伝いをしました。お神輿は日本のお祭りで大切な役割を担います。このお神輿は、毎年、デモイン市で開催されるアジア フェスティバルで、地元の人たちと日本文化を共有するために使用されます。私は台座作り、そして、担ぎ棒を切って磨きました。自分たちの手でお神輿を作ったのは、私たちの組織が初めてでした。誇りに思います。

　このお神輿は、５月２５日、アジア フェスティバルの開会式で、地元の皆さんにお披露目されました。日米協会の会員１２名がお神輿を担ぎました。この中には、現在、デモイン市で生活している２、３人の日本人ボランティアがいました。私たち全員、半被を着て、漢字で「祭り」と書いたはち巻きをしました。私たちは、ダウンタウンの公共広場を担いで回りました。およそ２０分から３０分かかりました。お天気は、快晴で、少し暑いくらいでしたが、完璧でした。

Raspberry flowers are the important source of nectar to bumblebees. In midsummer when small white flowers bloom and raspberries are ripe, I go out to our garden to harvest berries, and, invariably, bumblebees show up. Thus, bumblebees and I spend a while together. Because in the past few years, I had difficulties to reach down to the fruit-laden tops of the plants to harvest raspberries, I decided to set up stakes surrounding the raspberry patch, hoping the raspberry plant may grow standing up instead of drooping. While working with stakes and wire netting, I noticed a single bumblebee came over. It must have been alarmed by the activities at his raspberry patch, and conducted his own Crime Scene Investigation(CSI).

　バンブルビー（和名　マルハナバチ　丸花蜂）にとってラスベリー（木いちご）の花は大切な蜜源です。小さな白い花が咲きラスベリーが熟す真夏、毎朝、実の収穫に庭に出ると必ずどこからか丸花蜂がやって来ます。丸花蜂は蜜を吸い、私はラスベリーを収穫と一緒の時を過ごします。過去数年、重い実をつけたラスベリーの穂先を取り起こすのに難儀しましたので、今年は、ラスベリー畑を支柱でぐるりと囲めばラスベリーはまっすぐに成長するのではと、効果の程はともあれやってみることにしました。支柱を立て金網を張る作業をやっていると丸花蜂が一匹飛んできました。大切な食料庫の一大事と視察に来たのでしょうが、花が咲くのはまだまだ先のこと、どこから？どうして？と訝しく思ったことです。

Oklahoma City is about an eight hour drive from Des Moines. I went to an air force base there to see an airshow. Lots of people went there to see all of the planes. There were 20 to 30 different planes, both old and new. Some of the planes flew around the base. There were other planes that people could go inside. The event was free for the public. For one day only, anyone was allowed to visit the base.

　私は、オクラホマシティの空軍基地で行なわれた航空ショーを見に行ってきました。オクラホマシティは、私の住むデモイン市から車で８時間くらいのところにあります。たくさんの人がこの航空ショーを見るために来ていました。そこには、新旧２０機から３０機の飛行機がありました。何機かは基地の周りを飛び回っていました。一般人が中に入り、見学できる飛行機もありました。このイベントは、公開されていて無料でした。この日、一日だけは、一般人も基地に入ることが許されました。
