Collaborative Haiku Poem – 外壁の張替え

While a traditional Japanese house has white walls and tiled roofs, houses in America generally have shingled roofs and sidings.  Nowadays, many Japanese houses have mortar or concrete walls. Sidings of American houses also have changed from steel to vinyl. Since last week, steel sidings of our house have been replaced with vinyl ones. Hammering is very noisy to people inside the house.  But, this is an inconvenience that occurs only once in ten or twenty years.

　日本の伝統家屋は白壁に瓦葺きの屋根、これに対し、米本土の家屋は屋根がシングル（屋根板）で外壁がサイデイング（下見板）で囲ったのが一般的です。現在の日本では白壁の代わりにモルタルやコンクリートの外装が多くなったように、こちらのサイデイングも以前のスチール製からビニール製に変わっています。先週末から家のスチール製サイデイングをビニール製のそれに張替え中です。打ち込む釘の音はヴァイオリンの胴の原理で屋内に居るとガンガンと響きますが、10年か20年に一度のことと辛抱しています。

On October 12th, I went to visit a fire station. The fire station held a pancake breakfast. This event helped the fire station to raise money. It also gave people a chance to meet the firemen and to see the inside of a fire station. Each person was charged five dollars for a plate of pancakes. A piece of sausage and a carton of milk was also included. The firemen even added chocolate chips to some pancakes. While at the station, I got to see where the firetrucks are parked. I also got to see where the firemen keep their uniforms and equipment. There is also a place for the firemen to sleep at the station as well as a kitchen for them to cook meals. I met several firemen and they seemed very nice. I was happy to support the firemen and the fire station.

　１０月１２日に、私は消防署に行きました。消防署では、パンケーキの朝食を食べるイベントがありました。このイベントは、消防署が資金集めの為に行ないました。イベント参加者は、消防士に会ったり、消防署の内部を見学することができます。パンケーキは、一皿５ドルで、ソーセージ一個とミルクが付いていました。消防士の皆さんは、パンケーキにチョコレートチップも添えてくれました。消防署で、私は、消防車がとめてある所、そして、消防士の制服や装備を保管している所も見ることができました。消防士が署内で寝る所や食事を調理するキッチンもありました。私は何人かの消防士と話しました。彼らはとても素敵な人達でした。私は、消防士と消防署をサポートできて、非常にハッピーな気分になりました。

new day begins
the ocean has awoken
a giant mirror

うすぐも に　ガラス の うみ や　あき の あさ

With the arrival of Autumn the ocean on the south side of Oahu is so calm in the morning that it is almost like a giant mirror reflecting the sky. As the day goes on the winds get stronger and there are some small waves but unless there is a storm, the south side in the autumn through the winter is usually very calm, often looking like a giant lake. The morning ocean reflects the sky like a giant mirror.

　秋の季節がやって来ると、オアフ島南部の朝の海は、とても穏やかになり、大空を照り返す巨大な鏡のような感じになります。日が経つにつれて、風は少しずつ強くなり、小さな波が立ちますが、嵐が来なければ、秋から冬にかけては、たいてい、とても穏やかです。そして、しばしば、巨大な湖のような感じがします。オアフ島南部の朝の海は、大きな鏡のように、大空を照り返しています。

Twice a month I go shopping for food. Normally I go to the local grocery store because it’s convenient. The local stores are a little expensive compared to the mainland. The quality of their produce isn’t as good either because it takes about two week to arrive by boat.So whenever I get a chance I’ll go to Costco. However, Costco also ships their produce. But their meat, vegetables, and frozen foods are often cheaper. The quality seems better too. A normal Costco trip for me costs about $150 while the grocery store is about $50. I buy less at the grocery store because items are expensive and lower quality. However, because Costco sells in bulk, the fresh foods go to waste because I cannot eat them fast enough.

　私は、月に２回、食料の買い出しに出かけます。普段は、地元のスーパーに行きます。地元のスーパーは、便利ですが、米本土のスーパーに比べて少し割高です。また、品物がハワイに着くまでに、船で２週間ほどかかりますから、品質もよくありません。ですから、私は、機会があれば、いつでもコストコに行きます。ただし、コストコも、商品を船で運んでいます。しかし、肉、野菜、冷凍食品は、しばしば安くて、品質も良いようです。私が、コストコで使う金額は、だいたい１５０ドルです。一方、地元スーパーでは、５０ドルくらいです。地元スーパーは、品物が高くて、質が悪い為、買う量は少なくなります。ただし、コストコは、大量のまとめ売りが基本ですから、生鮮食品などは食べきれずに、無駄になることがあります。
