For the next 8 weeks I will be going to work twice a week at Pier 27 where Atlantis docks the submarines, three tug boats, and two shuttle boats. This past week was my first time going to the boats since March 13. Everything is so dirty! It does not take long for boats to get dirty if they are just sitting in the water. Also, the warehouse itself has gotten extremely dirty. My first day there all I did was clean and sweep the warehouse. Just cleaning the warehouse and its three bathrooms took me all day! Eventually my job will be to prepare and paint the boats. This will go until June

　これから二ヶ月間、私は、アトランティスの倉庫のある２７番桟橋で、週に２回、働きます。そこには、３隻の潜水艦、３隻のタグボート、そして、２隻のシャトルボートが停泊しています。２７番桟橋には、３月１３日から先週まで誰もいませんでした。行くのは１ヶ月ぶりです。船は、停泊しているだけで、すぐにもの凄く汚れます。また、倉庫も大変汚くなりました。最初の日は、倉庫を掃除するだけでした。倉庫と三つのトイレを掃除するだけで丸一日かかりました。倉庫の大掃除の後、私の取り組むべき仕事は、将来に備えて、船の整備点検とペイントです。この仕事は、６月までかかりそうです。

遊ばない食べたら昼寝そっとして
あそばない　たべたら ひるね　そっとして

My cat continues to grow and grow and now she is starting to take long naps during the day and likes to play either in the early morning or late at night. I noticed that she is starting to ignore my wife and I during the day so I guess her Kitten age is coming to an end! Whenever it is time for her to eat she is all playful and as soon as I feed her she ignores me!

　私の猫、かりんは、どんどん成長しています。最近、かりんは、日中、長い昼寝を取り、早朝や夜中に遊ぶのを好むようになりました。かりんが、日中、私たち夫婦を無視し始めたので、子猫時代の終わりが近づいていると思いました。食事の時間になると、相変わらず、はしゃぎ回りますが、餌を与えると途端に無視します。

dried and withered
plants slowly coming back

枯れた庭お花と植木生き返る
かれた にわ　おはな と うえき　いきかえる

My wife has been a member of one of the community gardens here for a few years. It is a very nice system. In different parts of Oahu there are large areas for the garden and people apply for a plot of land which is usually around 3 by 3 meters or 10 by 10 feet. After my wife applied she waited for about 2 months and then a plot became available. It is very inexpensive, only $20.00 a year. Once you receive your plot you can grow anything you want but if you don’t take care of the plot it can be taken away from you. There is a meeting once a month with all of the members and there is a President and a Vice President position that changes every year. Because of the Corona Virus it was closed for about a month but it is open again on the week days. Unfortunately when it was closed most of the plants died but now it is back running again.

　私の妻は、ここ数年、市民農園に参加しています。これは、とても良いシステムです。オアフ島には、色々な所に広い土地があって、住民は市役所に、土地利用を申し込むことができます。土地の広さは、普通、３メートル×３メートルです。私の妻は、申し込んでから、２ヶ月待って土地が空き、利用許可をもらいました。使用料は、非常に安く、一年間、２０ドルです。土地を受け取れば、好きなものを育てることができます。しかし、土地利用を怠った時は、返さなければなりません。毎月１回、メンバー全員の会議があります。会長と副会長がいて、毎年変わります。市民農園は、コロナウイルスのせいで、約1ヶ月間、閉鎖されましたが、平日は、再び、開けることになりました。閉鎖されていた間、ほとんどの植物は、枯れてしまいました。しかし、今、再び、息を吹き返しています。

utter silence
quietly walk the grounds

音がない午後の風だけ私だけ
おと が ない　ごご の かぜ だけ　わたし だけ

As I have written about in some previous Haiku, I have been going on walks in the afternoon to get out of the house. I live very close to the downtown area and so we often go to some of the famous spots like the King Kamehameha statue and the Iolani Palace which on a regular day have lots of visitors taking pictures and sight seeing around the areas. It is completely deserted now. An occasional local only. It is so strange for me to go there and see nobody there but in a way I feel like I have a private tour!

　新型コロナウイルス感染症拡大を防ぐ為の自宅待機の今、運動不足にならないように、妻と午後の散歩を続けています。私のアパートは、ダウンタウンの近くにあります。ですから、よく、有名な観光スポットへ出かけます、例えば、カメハメハ大王像やイオラニ宮殿です。普段、このあたりは、記念写真を撮る観光客で賑わいます。今は、時折、地元の人がいるだけで、閑散としています。あまりに人がいないので、変な気持ちになります。しかし、見方を変えれば、私たち夫婦だけのプライベートツアーと言えます。

ビルの町離れて眠る川の家
ビル の まち　はなれて ねむる　かわ の いえ

Recently I moved from Waikiki to the other side of the Ala Wai. I lived in Waikiki for about 6 years. While it was fun and I enjoyed the beach and views, I grew tired of it. Starting at 5am were tour buses driving up and down the street. Throughout the day there are sirens, cars, and delivery trucks echoing off the buildings. During the day my apartment felt like an oven. At night there were always bums and drunk people yelling until 3am. I couldn’t take it anymore so I moved.  Now I am out of Waikiki and loving it. My new apartment is a little far from the beach but it is cool, quiet, and relaxing. There is an amazing breeze that keeps the apartment cool all day. It is so quiet I sleep the whole night and roosters wake me up in the morning. Additionally, I wake up to a spectacular view of Diamond Head and Honolulu.  I should have moved out of Waikiki a long time ago.

　最近、私は、引っ越しました。ワイキキの北側を流れるアラワイ運河をはさんで向かい側の地区です。ワイキキには、６年ほど住んでいました。ワイキキでは、美しい空やビーチ、そして、美しい人たちを見るのを楽しみました。しかし、つまらなくなりました。ワイキキでは、午前５時頃から観光バスが、通りを行き来します。一日中、救急車のサイレンや車、配達トラックの騒音が、高いビルにこだまします。日中、私の部屋は暑くなり、オーブンの中にいるようでした。夜は、午前３時頃まで、酔っ払ったホームレスや、ハワイを楽しむ観光客、地元の人がお酒を飲んで騒いでいました。私は、心底、疲れました。我慢できなくなり、引っ越すことにしました。今の場所に移って、本当に良かったと思います。新しいアパートは、ビーチから少し離れています。しかし、涼しくて、静かで、リラックスできます。また、風通しが良く、一日中、心地よい風が吹き抜けます。また、夜は、一晩中、静かで、ぐっすり寝ることができます。朝になると、にわとりの鳴き声が私を起こしてくれます。その上、ダイヤモンドヘッドやホノルルの素晴らしい景色を眺めることもできます。私は、もっと早く引っ越すべきでした。

quarantine shopping

根気ない隔離の買い物帰りたい
こんき ない　かくり の かいもの　かえりたい

I went shopping for the first time in about 3 weeks to Costco as my wife and I had run out of almost everything. In the three weeks between shopping trips things have changed drastically. Now on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 8:00 until 9:00 the store is only open to those over 60 years old and to those who are handicapped. It is a nice idea but because it is so busy there was such a long line that even though my wife and I arrived about 7:30 we never got in until after 9:00. Even though it was very busy outside, inside was not crowded at all as only a certain amount of shoppers are allowed in at a time. I would say about 95% of the shoppers wored face masks and hoarding was not allowed. Things like toilet paper and paper towels were only one package per customer and only once a day. I was so happy to be done and I hope when we have to go back things will have gotten back to somewhat normal.

　買い置きしていたものが底をついたので、三週間ぶりに、コストコへ行きました。この前、買い物に行った時と状況は大きく変わっていました。現在、火曜日、水曜日、木曜日の午前８時から９時までは、６０歳以上の人と体の不自由な人だけが利用できます。いいアイデアですが、７時半頃行った時には、店の外では、午前８時からの入店を待つ人の長い行列が出来ていました。しかし、店の外と違って、店の中は、混雑していませんでした。一度に入ることができる買い物客の人数が制限されている為でした。買い物客の９５％くらいの人は、マスクを着用していました。また、買いだめは許可されていなかったと思います。トイレットペーパーやペーパータオルのようなものは、お客様一人あたり、１パッケージだけで、しかも、１日１回だけ買うことが出来ました。買い物を終えて、本当に、ほっとしました。三週間後にまた来た時、状況がすこしでも良くなっていることを願います。
