Since I live so close to Chinatown, one of the places my wife and I like to go to is the Aloha Tower. Once the tallest building in Oahu it is now dwarfed by many hotels and condominiums but still is a very stately building. Coming back to Honolulu harbor it is one of the landmarks that stand out and I am very fortunate that I can see it from pier 27 when I am working there. At night it is always lit up which makes it even more special.

　私は、チャイナタウンの近くに住んでいます。ですから、お気に入りの散歩コースは、アロハタワーへ行くことです。かつて、アロハタワーは、オアフ島で一番高い建物でしたが、今ではホテルやコンドミニアムが、たくさん立ち並び、小さく見えます。しかし、それでも私は、非常に風格のある建物だと思います。ホノルル港へ戻る時の目印の一つであり、幸い、私が２７番桟橋で仕事をしている時にも見ることができます。夜になると、いつもライトアップされ、さらに特別なものになります。

Collaborative Haiku Poem – 理髪店

理髪店マスクをつけたケイブマン
りはつてん　マスク を つけた　ケイブマン

A caveman, with unkempt hair and beard, is a familiar character in TV commercials.  Because barber shops have been closed during the coronavirus pandemic, people were worried that cavemen would appear all over the place.  As the lockdown has slowly been eased, barber shops can be open as long as face masks are worn by both barbers and customers.  However, the official announcement does not specify how the face is to be shaved with a mask on it!  BTW, it seems that Omaha citizens somehow managed the hair crisis this time.  But it is still possible that cavemen may appear.

　洞窟に住み、髪と髭は生えっぱなしといった原始時代の人間、ケイブマン、はテレビのコマーシャルでおなじみです。コロナ危機で理髪店が閉鎖となりましたから、ケイブマンがいたるところに出没するのではと懸念されました。外出自粛の規則が緩み、理髪師と客の双方がマスクを着用していれば、理髪業の再開可能となりました。しかし、公式の発表では、髭を剃る際マスクをどうするかは明らかではありません（！）。ちなみに、私の観察する限りではオマハ市民は今回の理髪危機をなんとか切り抜けたようですが、今後、ケイブマンが出現する可能性は否定できません。

空の道ビルの光に夜の風

I have written in past haikus about much less traffic since there are such few tourists coming to Hawaii. During my daily walks with my wife this is very evident but at night in the downtown area all the lights are still on in all the buildings and with the very little traffic I think that it makes a beautiful effect. This is one of the things I will miss when everything returns to normal.

　現在、ハワイに来る観光客は、ほとんどいない為、道路は大変空いています。このことは、昼間の妻との散歩中、実感するところです。夜間、ダウンタウン地区では、交通量は非常に少ないのに、すべての建物の電気は付いています。これは、実に美しい光景です。すべてが正常に戻った時、懐かしい光景として思い出されると思います。

都市封鎖マスクの世間自由止む
としふうさ　マスク の せけん　じゆう やむ

Everyone wears masks these days and it is strange to me. In Japan everyone wears face masks all the time. On the street, on the train, at the office, everywhere. In Japan wearing a face mask in public is part of the culture. In America it is not.  Nobody wears a mask in America, until now anyways. Because of the new corona virus, a lot of people are scared and wearing masks. State and Local governments across the country are requiring everyone to wear masks. On the bus, in the parks, at the grocery store, and even in the liquor store you are required to wear a mask. Americans are required to wear a mask in public now. Personally, I think it is too much. The government is overreaching their authority. Despite my feelings about wearing masks, sadly, I also wear a mask outside. I don’t wear it because I’m scared of becoming sick. I don’t wear it because the government says I must. I think the masks are stupid. I don’t think they really protect you. I am not worried about becoming sick. But! I am afraid of my wife so I wear one.  =) 

　最近、みんながマスクをしています。私は、変な感じがします。日本では誰もがいつもマスクをしています。町中で、電車の中で、あるいは、オフィスの中でも、あらゆるところでマスクをしています。日本では、公の場でマスクをするのは文化の一部です。アメリカではそうではありません。今まで、アメリカでは誰もマスクをしません。新コロナウイルスのせいで、たくさんの人が怖くて、マスクをしています。全国の州政府および地方自治体は、誰もがマスクをすることを要求しています。バス、公園、食料品店、酒屋でもマスクをする必要があります。アメリカ人は、今、公の場でマスクをする必要があります。私個人としては、やり過ぎだと思います。政府は厳しすぎます。私はマスクをしたくないのですが、残念ながら、外ではマスクをしています。病気になるのを恐れているからではありません。政府が命令するからしているのです。マスクは、ばかばかしいと思います。マスクが、本当に守ってくれるとは思いません。私は、新コロナウイルスが怖いからマスクをしているのではありません。妻が怖いから、マスクをしています。
