One of my jobs as a scuba diving Instructor is that of an Instructor Examiner. I test Instructor Candidates in what is usually a two day testing procedure. The first day is testing which includes 5 theory exams and one Standards and Procedures exam. This is followed by a classroom teaching presentation and the day is usually closed by a pool teaching session. The next day is a teaching session in the ocean. I just returned from Maui where I had 4 Instructor Candidates and everybody passed!

　スキューバ ダイビング インストラクターとしての私の仕事の１つは、試験官の仕事です。この仕事はインストラクターになりたい人を評価する仕事です。インストラクター試験はふつう二日かけて行なわれます。一日目は、五科目の筆記試験とプレゼンテーション試験です。プレゼンテーション試験はプールで行なわれます。生徒ダイバー役に対して適切に講習を行えるかを評価します。二日目は、海洋実習プレゼンテーションです。私は先週マウイ島から戻りました。私は四人の候補生を担当したのですが、全員合格しました。

forgotten era
walls hold many stories
whisper in the wind

前時代嬉しい思い出風に乗る
ぜん じだい　うれしい おもいで　かぜ に のる

I was very lucky to recently be able to go to Maui for two days for a scuba diving job. I was also very fortunate that the classroom portion of my job was held at the oldest hotel in Lahaina, the Pioneer Inn. The hotel opened in 1901. I also stayed there during my two days in Lahaina. Although the hotel has been modernized, there were many examples that it is an old building. The wooden floors would squeak in the classroom when everybody came in the room. The architecture is of an older time and there is even a nice smell to the building that almost says it is old. In my room the ceiling was very high and was graced by a beautiful fan. I couldn’t help thinking about all of the stories the walls could tell if they could talk!

　最近、プロのスキューバ ダイビング インストラクター候補生の為の仕事で二日間マウイに行ってきました。本当についています。また、スキューバダイビングの講義の部分は、ラハイナで最も古いホテル、パイオニア インで行ないました。幸運でした。ホテルは１９０１年に開業したもので、私はラハイナ滞在中、このホテルに泊まりました。このホテルは電気とか水道とかの設備は近代化されていますが、古さを示すものはいくつもありました。例えば、生徒達が教室に入って来る時、木製の床は、ミシミシ、きしむ音がしました。また、建物は古くても良い匂いがしました。天井はとても高く、美しい扇風機で飾られていました。もし壁が話せるなら、どんな話をするだろうなどと考えずにはいられませんでした。

Collaborative Haiku Poem – アカオノスリ

red-tailed hawk
on the fence in backyard
stands in fallen leaves

赤尾鷹落ち葉降り敷く庭に立つ
あかおたか　おちば ふり しく　にわ に たつ

Young hawks leave their nests in the fall and appear at unexpected places, such as people’s backyards and rooftops.  While soaring hawks in the clear sky are magnificent to look at, it is a little unnerving to see up close those sharp eyes and talons. We can only pray that the hawk hasn’t noticed us! Note: aka-o-taka is a Japanese literal translation of red-tailed hawk. The hawk is known as one of the soaring hawks, which tails are red against the sun.

　秋になると巣立ちの若鷹に思わぬ場所で出くわし驚くことしばしです。大空を飛翔する鷹ならば爽快と感じますが、その鋭い眼光と爪を自宅の裏庭などの間近の距離で見ると知らず知らず物陰に隠れて、見つかりませんようにと祈りたくなります。
　付記：赤尾鷹はred-tailed hawkを直訳したものです。大空高く羽ばたくことなく滑空します。尾を太陽に透かして見ると赤く見えるところからこの名がつきました。

屋外を走る喜び活性化
おくがい を　はしる よろこび　かっせいか

Recently I decided it was time to start losing the weight I gained during the COVID lockdowns. Running around the Ala Wai was getting boring, so I needed to find a new place to jog. I decided to give UH a try. The university isn’t too far from my apartment. Also, they switched mostly online classes this year so there won’t be many students. Jogging around the university is nice. There are uphill and downhill sections, a cool breeze, and lots of trees.

　コヴィッド ウイルスのロックダウンの間に体重が増えました。そこで私は、最近、体重を減らすことにしました。アラワイ運河の周りを走るのはつまらなくなったので、新しいジョギングコースを見つける必要がありました。ハワイ大学に向かう道を試すことにしました。大学は私のアパートの近くにあります。今年、大学は主にオンライン クラスに切替えた為、学生はあまりいません。大学の周りを走るのは楽しいです。上り坂や下り坂のところがあり、涼しいそよ風とたくさんの木もあります。

ツアーない灰色の雲また来年
ツアー ない　はいいろ の くも　また らいねん

Hawaii has finally started opening up to tourists from the mainland and although I am happy to see them come back I also have been feeling sorry for them. All the tourists that I have been getting on the boat are here for their first time. Many are here for their Honey Moon and also for a regular vacation. They all had images of blue sunny skies every day and all different things that they could do. Unfortunately, as we head into winter, we have not had blue sunny skies for about 1 week. We have had big gray clouds instead and lots of rain. Plus, because of the COVID virus there are many tours and attractions that have not opened up yet. Many hotels are still closed which means the restaurants also. Many of the customers I have talked to have been very disappointed and now can understand why the plane fare is so cheap!

　ハワイは、ようやくメインランドからの観光客に開放され始めました。観光客が戻って来るのは嬉しいのですが、一方で気の毒に思います。私の船に乗ってくださる観光客はハワイが初めての方ばかりでした。新婚旅行や休暇です。皆さんはハワイに来る前、毎日真っ青に晴れ渡った空、楽しい所、やりたいことを色々思い描いていました。しかし残念ながら、ハワイは冬に向かっているので、約１週間、青空はありませんでした。代わりに、灰色の大きな雲と雨がたくさん降りました。さらに、コロナウイルスのため、まだ再開されていないツアーやアトラクションがたくさんあります。多くのホテルはまだ閉鎖されており、レストランも閉鎖されています。私と話した観光客は、がっかりして、飛行機代とホテル代がどうして安かったか理由が今やっと分かったと言っていました。
